Geithner: Auditing the Fed is a “line that we don’t want to cross”

In an interview released today by Digg and the Wall Street Journal, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner was pressured about the growing popular movement to Audit the Fed spearheaded by Texas Congressman Ron Paul. A visibly uncomfortable Geithner attempts to dismiss the question by stating “I’m sure people understand that you want to keep politics out of monetary policy.” When Geithner is again pressed on the issue, he makes the stunning assertion that conducting an audit of the Federal Reserve—something never before done in its 96 year history—is a “line that we don’t want to cross,” proclaiming that such a move would be “problematic for the country.” Watch the interview in the player below:
Geithner’s response that auditing the Fed would give politicians dangerous control over American monetary policy is mistaken at best and a deliberate lie at worst. Allowing the public to know what happened to their $24 trillion in bailout money does not give undue control of monetary policy to the people’s elected representatives. Instead, such an audit would finally allow the public to see how their money has been spent in the midst of the largest spending binge in the history of the world’s economy, hardly an unreasonable demand given the well-documented revolving door between the Treasury and Goldman Sachs, the main recipient of bailout funds. Ultimately, the Treasury Secretary is left spewing the absurdity that “I think even the sponsor of that bill recognizes how important it is to us to have the Fed independent of politics,” which can only be said to be true insofar as Ron Paul—the sponsor of House Resolution (HR) 1207— wants to abolish the Federal Reserve system altogether.

That the Wall Street Journal would even pressure the Treasury Secretary on serious issues like the Audit the Fed movement may be surprising, given that the Wall Street Journal is a mouthpiece of the financial oligarchy and that editor Paul Gigot, like Geithner himself, is a Bilderberg attendee. Needless to say, this was not a typical inside-the-beltway interview. Instead, questions were submitted and voted on by the Digg community, with the top 10 questions being posed to Mr. Geithner.
As a result, the Secretary was bombarded by pointed questions about his documented tax evasion from 2001-2004, the wisdom of spending trillions of dollars in the light of long-term dollar devaluation and even, in the words of one particularly irate questioner, “Why are you running the Treasury Department?” Despite presumably having had time to prepare responses to each question well in advance, Geithner is still visibly discomfited by the entire exchange, picking at his shirt cuff and coughing nervously throughout the interview.
In one particularly telling moment, Geithner even admits “We have been forced to do just extraordinary things and, frankly, offensive things to help save the economy.”
That these questions are only being asked now, almost a year into the bailout and several months after the new administration has taken office, further highlights how the controlled corporate media is doing everything in its power to keep to well-trodden and uncontroversial areas in their interviewing of key administration officials. This interview is testimony to the power of the citizen journalism movement that is attempting to hold those in power accountable for their actions. We can only hope that the Obama Administration lives up to their promise to be the “cyber” administration by allowing more such question-and-answer sessions in the future.

Hmmm.. Interesting to call people dummies when you don’t seem to know exactly what you are talking about. The CAFRs are from the STATES and Federal Government — NOT THE FEDERAL RESERVE. The Fed has certain audits it does to report to congress, but it no longer includes how much money and credit has been issued and to whom. That is the point of the “audit the fed” movement.

I audit myself everyyear too. Four years ago the IRS spent 8 months of my time going over my books. I am a self employed bricklayer with no employees,and four children and wife. Do not even believe what the tax code says, deductions they say are legal are not when you get audited.Fifty dollar tip to a contractor? excessive denied etc. Why should we believe them , those who can legally counterfit legal tender and CHARGE US AND OUR GRANDCHILDREN INTEREST ON IT. What will the interest on 24 trillion be when bond rates go up?

These are just the reports I received from sources I have always believed to be credible. I won’t even mention the ones I get from the “wing nuts” out there. I have no idea whether any of these claims are true. And that’s part of the problem. I don’t think there’s one single unbiased information source left in this country. Everyone’s pushing some kind of agenda. The middle ground seems to have totally eroded away, and people on both sides are becoming just plain mean to anyone who disagrees with them. This polarization of opinions has effectively put an end to any meaningful discussion.

I’m trying to get a movement started by the 1st of the year. Taxes have become rape to the American citizen. An avg. of $93 a week is taken from our checks, totaling up to about $1,450,800,000 a year in income tax alone, that’s not counting social security and Medicare/Medicaid. Everyone needs to go into there W-2’s and max out there withholding allowances to 10-20 whatever they allow. That means the gov’t will take out less tax from you each week, then at the end of 2010 don’t file your taxes. We have to show them we are done being robbed. Before 1943 very few people paid income tax, and we should not be paying it today. A few people doing this will land them in jail, but if we thousands or millions what can they do but repeal the law.

I wonder if Bernanke & Geithner have instructions on what to do should a horrible calamity begin.
Do they (being a part of the World bankers) have a “continuity” as does the “governemnt”, where they hide & find protection in deep underground facilities ? Did any of you people get a certified letter in the mail from the US government allowing you access to the same protection ?
We have a government that is in operation to serve us and protect us, right ?? I mean…they are in existence for our interests, right ? It is not a question of audit, or not audit. The worls economy is in freefall and they are deliberately enriching the upper 2% at the expense of the nation’s infrastructure.
Simultaneously, we see other 3rd world countries taking huge bail-outs and applying the money to ‘infrastructure modernization.’ Largess projects, such as “public-private Toll Roads,” high-power electrical distribution networks, wireless towers and Nuclear power plants indicate a new level of interdependence with the IMF.
Without ‘auditing’ the Fed, and all of the *OTHER* ‘GOLD-MEMBER’ accounts we simply don’t know the extent by which they intend to distribute the wealth after they innoculate the masses with H1N1 and squalene.
By now the truth about WWI, II, JFK, OKC, and 9/11 is fairly well known throughout the west. It’s time we quit playing patsy and explore the facts about the French Revolution.

tim—I’m thinking if/when the day comes that the fed gets audited that’s when the world currency will hit the streets, and the fed will just fade away without a whimper, and we’ll have a whole new set of headaches to even wonder what happened to the fed and the thieving they did. Conservatives have been boycotting and demanding that people on the left get fired or reprimanded for their words for years now. It’s practically commonplace. I remember when Bill Maher lost his show at ABC because a bunch of panzy ass Republicans were offended by what he had said. Alex Jones didn’t seem to give a crap about protecting ALL forms of free speech back then now did he? Yet now all of a sudden that some of his right-wing pals have come under fire suddenly he’s the champion of the first amendment? This just further proves my point that he’s in total cahoots with these bottom feeders at Fixed Noise even though he pretends otherwise for ratings. Jones keeps calling this censorship when it has nothing to do with government imposing its will. The Glenn Beck situation is a consumer boycott intended to send a message to Fox News. Has anyone thought of the global fallout from exposing the actual value of our dollar? part of the audit will be to audit the gold reserve, and then compare it to dollars in circulation. You will be opening a can so large, we’ll need to be ready for reprecussions. AS AN ALTERNATIVE; why not consider state Sovereignty first? it strips the feds of their power, but allows us to trade with the world still on some level. There is really only one question that should be asked over and over again. How can we pay off the national debt, without extinguishing the money supply, since every dollar that exists is borrowed from the Fed? Since it is all borrowed, we must pay interest/rent, as long as we are using it. This constant out flow creates the built in demand to borrow more. We are closing in on the point at which a 100% tax, will not cover the interest payments. Game over! We are all slaves to the debt holders. Simple solution. create our own currency.
