GIVE Mandatory Service Act Strips First Amendment of “Volunteers”

On March 18, Rep. George Miller, a Democrat from California, tacked an amendment on H.R. 1388, entitled “Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education Act,” or GIVE (to government), Obama’s plan to require mandatory service for all able young people. Miller’s amendment will “prohibit organizations from attempting to influence legislation; organize or engage in protests, petitions, boycotts, or strikes; and assist, promote, or deter union organizing,” according to GovTrack.us, a site that tracks Congress.

In other words, Obama’s “volunteer corps” act, passed by the House with a 321-105 margin and requiring the government to develop a plan for indentured servitude, would deny millions of people their right to oppose and organize against government legistation under the First Amendment. “This is as close to a sedition act, a violation of 1st Amendment rights, as has been proposed in recent history. A basic right as a part of our natural, inalienable rights, is to resist government. Our founders not only knew it was a right but it was a responsibility. This legislation begins to break that down significantly,” writes Gary Wood for the Examiner.
GIVE (up your rights) will conscript millions of young people, put them in uniforms and send them packing to 4-year “public service” academies where they will be indoctrinated and trained to become “public sector leaders.”
GIVE was passed by the House on March 18 by an overwhelming bipartisan vote of 321 to 105. “At this moment of economic crisis, when so many people are in need of help and so much needs to be done, this could not be more urgent,” said Obama. “It is up to every one of us to do his or her small part to make the world a better place.”
Under section 6104 of the bill, entitled “Duties,” in subsection B6, the legislation states that a commission will be set up to investigate, “Whether a workable, fair, and reasonable mandatory service requirement for all able young people could be developed, and how such a requirement could be implemented in a manner that would strengthen the social fabric of the Nation and overcome civic challenges by bringing together people from diverse economic, ethnic, and educational backgrounds.”
Section 120 of the bill addresses the “Youth Engagement Zone Program” and states that “service learning” will be “a mandatory part of the curriculum in all of the secondary schools served by the local educational agency.”

“Many, however, are raising concerns that the program, which is intended to include 250,000 ‘volunteers,’ is the beginning of what President Obama called his ‘National Civilian Security Force’ in a a speech last year in which he urged creating an organization as big and well-funded as the U.S. military. He has declined since then to elaborate,” Unruh adds.
It appears Miller’s amendment is designed to strip members of this emerging “National Civilian Security Force” of their constitutional rights under the First Amendment.
The First Amendment reads as follows: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”
According to GovTrack.us, the addition of the Miller amendment to GIVE was agreed to by voice vote.
On March 23, a similar bill was passed by the Senate on a 74 to 14 vote. “From President Kennedy’s days to the creation of Americorps by then President Bill Clinton, the notion of public service has become a rallying cry. Tonight’s vote, propelled by President Obama’s urging of an expansion, would mean a growth in such work from 75,000 community service jobs to 250,000,” reported the New York Times.

Nice caps there. Anywho, its pretty sad that you’re losing the meaning and ramifications of what this means to all Americans. If you would do a little research, you would find that the Obama administration “scrubbed” all the sites from saying “mandatory” to “volunteer.” I completely agree with Undertow about the government trying to prohibit strikes, petitions, boycotts, and detering union organizing, to be equally troubling. One of our greatest freedoms we excise in this country is the ability to speak out and protest things that collective people find unjust or unfair. Why anyone would accept that right being taken away or not be disturbed at the direction this is taking our country is truly delusional.

Forced labor has built many of the world wonders, many of the greatest of mankind’s achievements have been the result of great amounts of suffering and strife. Pyramids, Great Wall of China, Sphynx, The vast network of American Railroads, the tobacco industry, Chichen Itza, Machu Picchu, Roman Colosseum, Taj Mahal, US Capital, White House…the list goes on. Many of the tourist attractions around the world are to the thanks of enslaved populations. Part of me wants to boycott these, but part of me is curious to see what new wonder an enslaved modern mass could inspire. A giant statue? A skyscraper? A modern-day pyramid? What magnificent wonder will tourists flock to in 5000 years, to what marvel will they gaze and awe, stopping momentarily to wonder at the tiny placcard describing tersely the catastrophic human suffering, summarizing in a much-amputated fashion the blood, sweat, tears, and death that culminated in the creation of something so glorious and so devastatingly beautiful despite or because of the toll of its atrocity? They’ll pause, reading the deaths it took to construct such a wonder, think, “wow, that’s a big number,” snap a photograph, tell the kids and wife to smile and wave standing before the great monument, and move on to visit the gift shop. The deaths buried beneath their feet, naught but a passing ponder, the bloodwrought facade but a memory enshrined now in a family photo album or ironed firmly onto a t-shirt to fade and tatter with wear until it becomes nothing but a rag in the garage, a fate kinder even than that faced by the millions who had suffered to construct the monument on which is emblazoned.

Indeed, what is the point of life… I was trying to make the point that all of mankind’s most beloved grandeur, our monuments, the structures that we glorify and tend to use as a guide to judge our progress have been created by the most outright evil and sadism, it would appear almost comical if it weren’t so fucking sick and beligerently sad.
Honestly, I’m to the point of not really giving too much of a damn about mankind anymore. They are an illogical, irrational, masochistic bunch. People seem to thrive on pain, my sister for example, won’t leave her abusive boyfriend no matter how much help is offered, nor how many times he kicks her pregnant belly, he will be the death of her and my hand will still be outstretched awaiting her own conviction to help herself, and that is how I’ve begun to feel about mankind. What if my intervention and help robbed them of the lesson they will learn through suffering? Those who have been enslaved know freedom best. If I free those who are held captive, i deny them the opportunity to realize fully the freedom they lack. What if the best thing that you can do for someone is watch them writhe in agony until they either give up and die or take hold of their own life and overcome? We would be doing a terrible injustice to mankind to save it from its own destruction, because then it would never learn the lesson that needs to be learned the hard way. Moses, leading slaves out of Egypt did the Jews the most terrible injustice they’ve ever suffered because he conned them out of and robbed them of the resolve to overcome it themselves, even in Moses’ lead, they had remained slaves, domesticated to his will, subordinate to his grandeur, dependent upon his lead. You can’t lead someone out of slavery, the concept is oxymoronic, the only true freedom is freedom within yourself, the only way to escape slavery is to escape it in your mind on your own of your own power and will. Hmmm, we wonder how many folks are fighting to be “first in line” to “volunteer” for this??? How many young people we know who have come out of great universities with $25K (or much more) in DEBT and the only job they could get was a ten-buck-an-hour gig at a call center (”and I went to college for four years for this?”). Unfortunately, “volunteerism” isn’t going to pay the bills, and if there isn’t a single person in the government who can figure that out (yet) there are millions of young people who can, and AS USUAL we are being given yet another “problem to the solution”. The real need is for living wage jobs, millions of them every year over the next decade at the very least , and the young people know that… so! this not-so-great idea of “volunteerism” is going to run in to a lot of real resistance, real quick, unless Uncle Sam is going to be providing some amazing tax-credits with lots of future-year carry-overs for the “volunteers”, who would rather be earning real money, by the way.

Protesting never would have had an effect on this in the first place. It never has. I’m sure Obama will see the rise of a “voluntary” national security force. This national security force will be just as strong, just as well funded as the us military. It’s numbers will match or surpass the military. It’s devotion will be beyond any government mandated program.
This National Security Force will be well organized, uniformed and will be paraded down main street of ever small town. It’s volunteers will come from all walks of life. From doctors, lawyers, EMT, police, state reserves, grand parents, kids, and families.
The force I see coming will be armed with signs, information and a dedication that cannot come from a bill. The doctrine of conduct will be the Constitution. The rally cry will be freedom. The national Security force i see coming will be millions strong, supported by donations and sacrifice. People will indeed come together – without the GIVE act – and truely become a National Security Force.
No government will break it, no tyrant can scare it, no fake massiah can command it.
I see a National Security Force as well Mr. Obama. And will take orders from you. It will protect the Constitution and remove you and your communist world order from the soils of the United States of America.

How many of you have called your congressmen and senators and said “DO NOT DO THIS”? I called both of my senators and let them know that I was firmly against such a bill. Sadly, one of my senators, Russ Feingold, was a co-sponsor of this bill. I’ve got to give the guy credit as being one of the only people who voted NAY to the Patriot Act, but proposing this kind of legislation is just unconscionable.
Massive phone calling campaigns have been effective in batting down legislature of this nature in the past. We just have to rise to the occasion and say flat out NO.

Ron Paul’s name is listed as one of the Republican Aye votes. He is one of two republicans listed as voting “Aye.” The other is Wayne Gilchrest.

We as Americans have a responsibility to our family first, then community, then Country. We do not have a responsibility to the world as Obama said. We can be of no service to anyone anywhere if we first don’t set an example of order within our own borders. Before we go trekking around the world and making ‘it’ a better place, we first have an obligation to all Americans to keep America safe and our children safe and our neighborhoods safe. This idiotic mandatory ‘volunteer’ baloney is to indoctrinate the youth in global and international UN armies to be used around the world for their own elitist purpose – royalty is still here. We continue to make slaves of our younger generations to keep the elite in a position of power and greed, leaving no one minding the store at home.

If the public were not so dumbed-down, they would realize that the federal government has no authority to initiate compulsory military service. All that a selected person has to ask whoever requests that he/she step forth and “volunteer” is, “What Rights am I acquiescing and am I required to acquiesce those Rights?”, and they must allow that person to leave without being compelled into a branch of the military!
The people have been so dumbed-down by the government schools and the totally, controlled media that they do not have any idea what their Rights are, however, the internet is a terrific source to discover those Rights!

The reason people have been (dumbed-down) by the government schools and media is
simply because the country has allowed this to happen. The decleration of independence
and the constitution were made to protect the right for LIFE, LIBERTY AND THE PURSUIT
OF HAPPINESS. As the years have come and gone, people have been weeding out the
word PURSUIT.
We have now allowed for people to just sit back and watch the bus stop and leave and
then complain that someone else didn’t pay for their fare. Now it has made it into
Washington. I still can’t comprehend how a man/woman can work hard and do the right things
in life and then be ridiculed for their accomplishments. Not every rich person was raised
in a rich neighborhood. Now it seems that the government wants to make it mandatory
for the person who does the right things pay for the ones who just want to sit on their
backsides and gripe. Mandatory?
This country has overcome many obstacles by people wanting to help each other, not by
being told the should. Look at North Dakota. Right now there is a potential for a major
catastrophy and still there are people there from all around helping because they want to
help there fellow citizen.
The government is not there to say wether or not it will be mandatory for my child or
any child in this country to volunteer for any organization(govermental or private).
We accomplish more things by being the people we are, and have been, not people that
a person or group wants us to be.
How hypocritical is it for our congress to pass a bill like this and our president even consider
it when our own vice-president doesn’t like much of his own volunteering for charitable
organizations.
