Global Warming or Global Freezing: is the ice really melting?

President Obama just made a melodramatic appeal at the United Nations for global measures to dramatically curb what he called “the climate threat,” current euphemism for what is more popularly known as Global Warming, the theory that man-made CO2 emissions from cars, coal plants and other man-made sources are causing the earth to warm to the point the polar icecaps are irreversibly melting and threatening to flood a quarter or more of the earth’s surface. There’s only one thing wrong with Mr. Obama’s dramatic scenario: it is scientifically utterly wrong. Since 2007 the polar icecaps have been growing not melting and the earth has been cooling, not warming.

The Secretary General of the UN, Ban Ki-Moon even made a recent appeal while standing on an Arctic ice-flow, claiming that man-made CO2 emissions were causing
“100 billion tons” of polar ice to melt each year, so that in 30 years the Arctic would be “ice-free”. One organization, the WWF, claimed that the Arctic ice was melting so fast that in eighty years sea-levels would rise by 1.2 meters, creating “floods affecting a quarter of the world.” Wow! That’s scary. Goodbye Hamburg, New York, Amsterdam…
The publicity stunt of Ban Ki-Moon was carefully orchestrated. It was not said that his ship could only come within 700 miles of the North Pole owing to frozen ice. Nor that he made his stunt in the summer when Arctic ice always melts before refreezing beginning September.
The reality about Arctic ice is quite different. Although some 10 million square kilometres of sea-ice melts each summer, each September the Arctic starts to freeze again. The extent of the ice now is 500,000 sq km greater than it was this same time last year – which was, in turn, 500,000 sq km more than in September 2007, the lowest point recently recorded (see Cryosphere Today of the University of Illinois, http://arctic.atmos.uiuc.edu/cryosphere/ ).
By next April, after months of darkness, it will be back up to 14 million sq km or likely more. As British science writer Christopher Booker remarks, “even if all that sea-ice were to melt, this would no more raise sea-levels than a cube of ice melting in a gin and tonic increases the volume of liquid in the glass.”
Sunbeams from cucumbers?
The current global warming propaganda scare is being hyped by politicians and special interests such as Goldman Sachs and other Wall Street financial firms that stand to reap billions trading new carbon credit financial futures. They are making an all-out effort to scare the world into a deal at the December Copenhagen Global Warming summit, the successor to the
Kyoto agreement on CO2 emission reduction. It’s been estimated that the Global Warming bill supported by Barack Obama and his Wall Street patrons, passed by the House of Representatives but not by the more conservative US Senate, would cost US taxpayers some $10 trillion.
In the UK, where Prime Minister Gordon Brown is fully on the global warming bandwagon, the BBC, the Royal Society are proposing wild schemes for “climate engineering,” including putting up mirrors in space to keep out the sun’s rays, or lining the highways with artificial trees to suck CO2 out of the air, to be taken away and buried in holes in the ground. Perhaps it would provide make-work for a few thousand Britons unemployed by the ravages of the recent financial collapse, but it would do nothing else than waste taxpayer money already stretched to the limits in bank bailouts. The entire farce has been compared to satirist Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver who meets a fictional character trying to extract sunbeams from cucumbers.

(http://www.agu.org/pubs/crossref/2009/2008JD011637.shtml), confirms that over the past fifty years, since 1950, fully 81% of tropical climate change can be linked to the Pacific weather phenomenon known as El Nino. And the remaining 19% they linked to increased solar radiation. No man made emissions played a role.
El Ninos, termed by scientists El Nino Southern Oscillations or ENSOs, are believed by climatologists and astrophysicists to be related to eruptions in solar activity which occur periodically.

Dr. Theodor Landscheidt of Canada’s Schroeter Institute for Research in Cycles of Solar Activity, says ENSO is the “strongest source of natural variability in the global climate system. During the severe ENSO event 1982/1983, when the sea surface off Peru warmed by more than 7° C, it was discovered that there are strong links to weather in other regions as, for instance, floods in California and intensified drought in Africa.”
Landscheidt adds, “El Niño and La Niña are subjected to external forcing by the sun’s varying activity to such a degree that it explains nearly all of ENSO’s irregularities and makes long-range forecasts beyond the 1-year limit possible. This is no mere theory. My forecasts of the last two El Niños turned out correct and that of the last one was made more than two years ahead of the event…” (Solar Activity Controls El Niño and La Niña, in http://www.john-daly.com/sun-enso/sun-enso.htm.). Even James Hansen, one of the outspoken protagonists of the Global Warming idea admits, “The forcings that drive long-term climate change are not known with an accuracy sufficient to define future climate change…The natural forcing due to solar irradiance changes may play a larger role in long-term climate change than inferred from comparisons with general circulation models alone.”
El Ninos are linked to floods, droughts and other weather disturbances in many regions of the world. In the Atlantic Ocean, effects lag behind those in the Pacific by 12 to 18 months. They tend to occur every three to eight years. La Ninas are the associated cooling phase of the Pacific Ocean cycles.
According to the US National Oceans and Atmospheric Administration, in North America, El Niño creates warmer-than-average winters in the upper Midwest states and the Northeast. California and the southwestern US become significantly wetter, while the northern Gulf of Mexico states and northeast Mexico are wetter and cooler than average during the El Niño phase of the oscillation. In Asia and parts of Australia El Nino causes drier conditions, increasing bush fires.
This sounds remarkably like what the Global Warming scare chorus claims is the result of manmade CI2 emissions or as they now slyly term it, “climate change.”
Warmer 1000 years ago?
In Sweden a new study (, in published by Haakan Grudd of the University of Stockholm’s Department of Physical Geography and Quaternary Geology confirms that the Arctic today is not warmer than in previous historical periods centuries ago before coal power plants or automobiles. Grudd’s study concludes that “The late-twentieth century is not exceptionally warm in the new record: On decadal-to-centennial timescales, periods around a.d. 750, 1000, 1400, and 1750 were equally warm, or warmer. The 200-year long warm period centered on a.d. 1000 was significantly warmer than the late-twentieth century and is supported by other local and regional paleoclimate data.” (H. The only problem with these serious scientific studies is that mainstream media entirely ignores them, preferring dramatic scare story scenarios such as Barack Obama presented in his UN speech or the UN’s Ban Ki-Moon in his staged Arctic ice drama.
Strangely enough, none of the Global Warming proponents that I am aware of have tried to correlate ENSO activity with global temperature changes. Should we instead be proposing to outlaw El Ninos or forbid solar eruptions? It makes as much scientific sense as banning or capping CO2 emissions. Global Warming as a new religion is one thing, but we should be clear that the high priests are the same Gods of Money who brought us Peak Oil religion a few years ago and the current trillion dollar financial meltdown known as asset securitization. The reality is that Global Warming like Peak Oil and other scares are but another attempt by powerful vested interests to convince the world to sacrifice that they remain in control of the events of this planet. It’s a thinly veiled attempt to misuse climate to argue for a new Malthusian reduction of living standards for the majority of the world while a tiny elite gains more power.

Fill a glass as full as you can get it with ice, then add water to the brim. Let the ice melt. The water level goes DOWN. Ice expands, displacing the liquid water. As it melts and becomes liquid, it gets denser. Even if the polar ice caps were to melt completely, New York, etc., would not be in danger of flooding. This is “scientific scare-mongering”. Don’t buy the lie.

Wow! Imagine that! Home Schooled when I was only 4 years old. It’s called the displacement of matter. H2O is water. You freeze it, then the O2 mol’s double, or even triple in cases. ( I won’t get into that on this site. ) The Hydrogen and or Mols seperate or become still and seperate under cold temps, therefore dissplace water. Can any of you tell me about Boyle’s law, or Charles Law? How about old Henry’s Law? Ohh yeah… Never mind. ( I might be only one of 1000 on this site with an education!)

I just have to correct what has become a popular mistake regarding sea level rise. The model suggesting that there would not be a net increase in water level if the ice caps melted holds true for the Arctic, because there is no land beneath the Arctic ice. It is essentially a huge ice cube floating on the Arctic Sea.
However, ice forming over land, like Greenland, or the Antarctic, or the many mountain glaciers, is another matter altogether. In these instances, there is a downward weight caused by the mass of ice that is only slowly released by the melting of that ice. When icecaps melt over these surfaces, there is a net increase in water relative to the land surface (perhaps as much as 200 feet). How can we confirm this?
The geologic record has evidence of what we know as in lap-off lap or transgressive-regressive sequences of marine sedimentary rock. An example is the Atlantic -Gulf Coastal Plain, where we find rocks in the subsurface that were originally beach sands near by Philadelphia, Richmond, Atlanta, Memphis, San Antonio. We also know that as recently as 10,000 years ago, the Atlantic Ocean was approximately 50 miles east of Atlantic City. Finally, archaeologists have discovered a number of ancient cities that were covered over by rising water.
The whole issue of sea level rise and climate change is a red herring. Looking at the historic cycles, sea level has risen and fallen. and climate has changed. If humanity is so smart, then it will adapt to these changes.

sloughing off at the edges is normal as the ice mass grows

10) The coveted .7 degree rise in temperatures over the last 100 years
has been wiped out with last years below “normal” temperatures (NOAA
coolest winter since 2001)
11) Al Gore’s film was just deemed “propaganda” in a court of law in the
UK as many points could not be substantiated by scientists
12) It was also just reveled that some of the footage in Als film was
CGI. The ice shelf collapse was from the movie The Day After Tomorrow (ABC)
13) One of the scientists that originally thought that CO2 preceded the
warming has now found with new data that the CO2 rise follows the
warming (Dr David Evans)
14) August 2008 was the first time since 1913 there were no sun spots.
15) The Medieval Warm Period was warmer than the 20th century (no SUVs)
16) Many scientists are now predicting 30 years of cooling.
17) The greenhouse effect is real, our small contribution to it cannot
even be measured
18) Several publications, including those that are warmist have recently
written that the natural cycles of the earth may mask AGW. Give me a break.

What stars I live on ~ 53 deg. N and barely see the stars. Seems to be a PERMANENT CHEMTRAIL LAYER AT 30,000 feet. You can see the layer during a variable cloud day just look through clouds at zenith(directly overhead) towards the blue sky spots and you will see a very light and faint opaque layer. On a clear day it is more difficult to see the PERMANENT CHEMTRAIL LAYER.

fill a cup with ice and water and measure where the water line is. Let the ice melt and measure the water line again. What happens? THE WATER LINE LOWERS. So if and when this Arctic ice melts, it will, in fact, LOWER the sea level…not raise it an flood the world. Ice takes up MORE volume than liquid water.

The problem with your example is that the ice floating in a drink is already in the water. The ice in the arctic isn’t floating around the ocean, it’s weight is not displacing water it is above ground. your example should be hold an ice cube above the glass and have it melt into the glass. Which way does the water level go. Thats why when the ice melts its impact will raise ocean levels.

“arctic” means above the arctic circle. there is land up there. the greenland icecap is landlocked and contains more fresh water than lake baikal or something. arctic ice is both above water on land, below sealevel on land and above and below sea level at sea. this is a non-argument, people know all this.

Although 98% of Antarctica is ice, there is land underneath the ice cover, unlike the Arctic where the ice floats on top of the ocean.

actually if the antarctic ice and greenland ice melted all at once, it would send sea level rising more like 100 meters, not 1.5 meters. NASA seems to think Greenland’s icecap is ablating, losing more than it’s gaining by precipitation, but that sure as heck doesn’t mean the whole thing is melting, or that the marginal melt is due to man-made factors. the science is all whacky in the man-made global warming camp, it has to ignore the data established from multiple ice cores samples several km in length from greenland and corrobarating data from vostok that show the climate has fluctuated much more wildly in the past than it has now.
the other bit that is way off is that if greenland gives up a lot of fresh water, this less dense water sits on top of the cold dark north atlantic in pools, and the warm gulf stream waters hit it and sink, being more dense, so the gulf stream conveyor belt is radically shortened or halted completely. this leads to an ice age in europe and north america. which is exactly what the CIA was predicting back in the 1970s. they’re not as fumbling as they try to appear a lot of times.

I recently sat in on a lecture given at the University of Arizona by a respected climatologist, unfortunately I can’t remember his name! But he said the following little nugget plus many other: 97% of the green house gases are actually composed of water! Of the left over 3% the amount caused by humans as opposed to volcanoes and other natural causes was .05%! And that was since the beginning of the industrial age! So if you want to truly stop global warming, which he also actually said it’s getting cooler any way, Then you need to start a great big new campaign against clouds! CLOUDS, THEY ARE KILLING OUR PLANET!!!! LOL….It’s a money making scheme and a way to legislate away more of our rights. that’s it….

Again, global warming is caused by the SUN, not human activities.
So reducing industrial output – won’t change whether or not the Earth warms or cools. It is SUN DRIVEN.
Now, IT IS TRUE however, if the ice caps melt, sea level would rise. Not the arctic ice, but the ice that is on LAND. That isn’t in the oceans right now, thus it WOULDN’T be like an icicle floating in water.
So if the SUN causes the Iceland and Antarctica to melt, yes you would see a couple hundred foot rise in the sea levels. If just iceland, 20-30 feet. (antarctica is the BIG one you don’t want melting).
But again, it’s NOT humans causing global warming. It’s the SUN.
Peak oil is true. Sort of. There’s still oil, lots of it, BUT, our ability to get at it, is not.
Therefore there IS in a sense peak oil, since 70+ percent of all the oil in the world is under the oceans. We can get to some of it, more of it every few years as more technology is created, but overall we can’t get to it all. We very well might use so much, that what we can pump from land, or right off the coast won’t be enough to satisfy us. Thus peak oil, in that sense, is VERY REAL.
But, who knows how much oil is being hidden off the market by the oil countries. I’ve even heard there’s more than in Saudi Arabia, off the coast of Alaska. Now that part is speculation, but it wouldn’t surprise me.
Also, there are signs that some of the wells are refilling themselves. Hard to say how much they’ll refill, whether it will be a constant process, or a 1 or 2 time thing before it goes completely dry. But even if it does constantly refill, again, how fast does it?
Therefore if we need to wait 50 years for it to fill 30 percent back up, then we will have problems with PEAK OIL.
So while this guy claims alot of things, he too, is wrong.
But I wouldn’t put it past our gov’t to use these ideas as means of control, or treating them as bargaining chips in international affairs.

I live on the water and have my whole fifty years. We have on average ten foot tides here. 20% would be two feet. That means in my lifetime the water level increased one foot. Guess what? I am not attacking you so please simply answer my questions and do not get defensive.
First of all, this was not written by this site, this is clearly cited as a work by a scientific study from multiple sources and all of the documents cited are referenced according to collegiate standards and you can simply click the links to read the studies.
Are you a geologist or a meteorologist? I would presume not. I however double majored in Geology and meteorology at Western Washington University1998, going on to get my Masters in Geology in 2000. Not to put this arrogantly, but I believe I would be a far better source of knowledge and carry more credibility than you would. The very text that the leftists use to slander the Co2 emissions from man made sources also says that livestock produces more than all of humanity. There are many factors to take into consideration when talking about the possible climate change. However it is truly impossible to make the claim that the earth is either getting warmer or cooler because there are so many different variables. For something to be proven scientifically you have to be able to control the variables that could affect the out come of the experiment. However we can no more control solar flares, eruptions, underwater volcanoes that could be heating sections of the ocean (ever so slightly) etc. all of these things prevent anyone from being able to make a scientific case for the effects that man made Co2 is having on the environment.
That said even the new cap and trade bill that will make a few people very very rich at its best estimates will only influence the world climate by 0.15 degrees over the next ten years… for 10 trillion dollars… This is nothing more than a few shills attempting to get very wealthy.
To all of the other people who post here, I beg of you. Do not do as they do, educate people rather than demonizing them. You are you using the very Marxist principles that they are when you practice critical theory against them. (watch the 3 part series on youtube.com about “history of political correctness”) rather than attack the poster which is a argumentative fallacy, gently deconstruct their argument so they may learn from it and hopefully see what is actually happening.

Yesterday I read an artice that some Envirnomental Wacko wrote saying that Global Warming was making the glaciers in Greenland melt, cooling the Gulf Straem thus making Europe cooler. Guess it made the US cooler this summer too. Lets all PRAY we don’t freeze this winter. greenland glaciers are melting AT THE EDGES (which is where melting always happens uness you get a volcano under the ice or something) faster than they were observed to melt before. this is sending fresh water into the north atlantic. enough fresh water in the north atlantic and the gulf stream will shut down. the reason the glaciers are melting faster at the edges is not known. the amount of fresh water needed to shut down the gulf stream is not known. there is zero danger that the greenland icecaps becomes “unstuck” and slides into the ocean all at once, it doesn’t roll that way.

The president talks about “carbon pollution” yet atmospheric CO2 is the key to life, a gas essential to all life on earth isnt a pollutant in any sense, when you cut to the chase its that simple, CO2 is life and it means life, it is no more a pollutant than O2.
I was left with the feeling that unless reality comes a knockin on the Whitehouse door soon then we are all screwed.

Here’s the thing. If all of the ice in the caps were to melt, it wouldn’t have a noticeable effect upon most people, especially those inland. It would cause the ocean levels to rise in the coastal regions, where many, many people live…especially those in third world, or developing nations. That would have a destabilizing effect upon all of us, including those who are safely inland, due to displacement and discord. I am not a fan of carbon credits, or any of the other methods that are used by some to make these changes, but come on. Really. Could you imagine what would occur if global coastal regions would intrude upon established human populations? I’m, for one, glad that they have finally started to use the weather modification programs to cool the planet, a bit. I have nothing against people from third world and developing nations. In fact, I’d love to find a way to raise their standards of living beyond the point that they are at, without decreasing our own standards of living, without raising the ocean levels for those coastal regions. Don’t forget that ice contains more air molecules, than water does. When it melts, that air is liberated into the atmosphere, while the water collects below. One more thing. Who, out there, believes that oil, gas, and nuclear fission are the only, and most advanced, sources of energy production? Unless you own shares of stock, in those oil, gas, and nuclear fission related companies. then you should certainly embrace the suppressed energy generation methods.
