Government, Big Pharma Push Bill to Drug America’s Mothers

It’s called the Melanie Blocker Stokes MOTHERS Act and if passed it will turn countless women into lifelong customers for Big Pharma. It was killed in the Senate last year but it was reintroduced in January of this year. Democrat Senator Robert Menendez from New Jersey, home to a large number of drug companies, and Democrat Richard Durbin are the main sponsors of the bill in the Senate (S. 1375).

In a March 30, 2009 speech on the House floor, the original sponsor of the bill, Illinois Democrat Bobby Rush claimed that “60 to 80 percent of new mothers experience symptoms of postpartum depression while the more serious condition, postpartum psychosis, affects up to 20 percent of women who have recently given birth.” In response to a House vote to pass the legislation on the same day, Rush said: “H. R. 20 will finally put significant money and attention into research, screening, treatment and education for mothers suffering from this disease.”
The bill was moved to the U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pension Committee on March 30 where it will be “marked up” in the near future. The legislation is backed by the U.S. Senate H.E.L.P. committee, chaired by Senator Edward Kennedy, and supported by president Obama.
Evelyn Pringle, a columnist for Scoop Independent News, writes that the “true goal of the promoters of this Act is to transform women of child bearing age into life-long consumers of psychiatric treatment by screening women for a whole list of ‘mood’ and ‘anxiety’ disorders and not simply postpartum depression.” In short, the medical industry and Big Pharma want to deem pregnancy a mental illness and prescribe dangerous psychotropic drugs.
“The Mothers Act has the net affect of reclassifying the natural process of pregnancy and birth as a mental disorder that requires the use of unproven and extremely dangerous psychotropic medications (which can also easily harm the child). The bill was obviously written by the Big Pharma lobby and its passage into law would be considered laughable except that it is actually happening,” writes Byron Richards for NewsWithViews.

“It is my understanding that the process of birth, the intimate bonding of mother and child, and the placing of significant responsibility on the father is all part of a healthy culture and the backbone of the fabric that makes strong families and consequently our great nation. I fail to see why we need laws that force health care professionals to emphasize the idea that the process is some type of mental illness affecting 80% of all women – what a bogus pile of crap,” Richards wrote last month.

“60 to 80% of all new mothers experience symptoms of postpartum depression” and “20% experience postpartum psychosis” ? Those numbers seem awfully high…where are they getting these numbers from? I believe these 2 diagnoses exist and are legitimate but are far less common. I think there’s a lot of confusion between what is true depression and what’s New Mom Fatigue Syndrome and sleep deprivation. It’s terrible these drugs companies are pushing this type of legislation to sell more drugs.
Also what’s with all the comments that have nothing to do with the content of the article. I just don’t get it. I rarely post comments here because the majority of the comments I see here are just completely ridiculous.

Oh an 20% PPP – is clearly incorrect. 20% of moms are purported by these folks now to get PPD not PPP, but last year it was 10-15%. Last year they touted that 800,000 women a year get PPD and complained that not enough of these women go on meds. Now they have bumped that up to 1,000,000 per year. I am pretty sure they just keep telling big fish stories.

A woman’s whole chemistry changes in pregnancy along with blood volumne and hormones. This is normal, but the drug and medical coporations have turned it into a disease.
Have your babies at home with midwives. Lay-midwives are actually better since they are not licensed but have the same skills. Stay away from the promoters of hospitals and c-sections.
Educate yourselves and you will see how dangerous hospital births really are.

I have had 2 kids and I am pregnant with my third. There is always a period after you give birth called “baby blues”- it lasts like a week, and it is like mild anxiety, you cry about nothing, feel really trapped by the baby, etc. Since I know to expect it now, I usually joke about it the whole time I am going through it. If that is the 80% of women they are talking about, come on. What kind of wimpy woman can’t handle a week of feeling kinda weird and anxious? You know it’s going to go away! (If it doesn’t go away, then yeah, maybe you should check out some counseling or something) I will not be taking any- ANY- drugs during my pregnancy or after. I don’t even like to take a tylenol. I also get very, very moody during pregnancy. I am sure they would want to prescribe me something for that, but I’ll just take a fish oil vitamin, thanks.

Try convincing a women while she is in this state to try something natural.
I also think as women get closer to their date, they get less sun (vitamin D).
Next is the price, if one has a good job then your drugs are next to free. Omega 3 – is over 10 bucks for a bottle.
Your local drug dealer – opps I mean pharmacist will always win a ladies heart. It must be that nice clean look and white jacket.

Pregnant women do act differently to before they were pregnant. They seem to be more receptive to people helping them. They normally go to the health authorities for this and are more valnerable to offers of medical help whilst in this state. But they do want to protect their baby.
In the 60’s a pill was given to pregnant women to help with morning sickness. The babies were born with deformed limbs.

This is cuh-rap! The last thing these women need are drugs. My wife had a bought of post-partum depression. Mainly it was because we had a C-section and had to resort to drugs, which went against all our plans. We had to confront this fact and thank God for our healthy child. We now are going to VBAC with a homebirth because of the lessons we learned. In addition, my wife had trouble recovering because of the drugs in her body, for instance, pictocin. It took her a long time to bring down her swelling and her weight. She did numerous cleanses. We then also had trouble conceiving another child and one miscarriage. Obviously there are multiple factors in these events, but drugs DO NOT help in these situations. Natural remedies, perspective (that is, the blessing of a healthy child), and family/friend support are what are best. The thing is they take something natural, childbirth and the feeling women feel afterwards, and make it into a disease and a condition that needs to be treated. I would advise all women to have their children outside of a hospital under the care of a midwife or an independent doctor. Don’t fall for their drugs and interventions because it will just snowball into being hooked up and sliced and then depression. It you have no trouble being drugged and c-sectioned (for true non-emergencies), then I would suggest you relook at this situation. Women have been having children since the beginning of time. We are made to have children. It is not an emergency, or a disease, or a condition that needs to be treated. The best way to have a baby, I believe, is at home under the watchful guidance of a experienced midwife or independent doctor. Seek these out. They are very good at handling most situations including breech babies. Of course, always have provisions ready for emergencies. Most women will do well in this situation, and the baby will. Bond with the baby immediately after birth. No shots, no drugs, etc. Most women will be “healed” by that bond. God bless!

Homebirth is the way to go! We just had our second child at home and it was a great experience. My wife says she wouldn’t have it any other way. We had our first at the hospital, natural with no drugs. The nurses were great but the pediatrician was a dick when it came to drugs and vaccines. You see if you don’t vaccinate, Pediatricians would have few customers. In fact at the two month “wellness visit” if you tell them you are not vaccinating they don’t schedule another appointment for you. But that is after they tell you what a wonderful thing vaccines are and that you are making a big mistake buy not getting them. Don’t fall for the fear tactics, you have rights and don’t believe them when they tell you other wise! Both of our kids are vaccine free and healthy, thank the Lord. People better start making some health decisions in their life before big pharma is their only option. This just irritates the hell out of me. (PPD)postpartum depression as well as other psychological conditions which are often created by taking medication pushed by big pharma…pushed by doctors, can be dealt with effectively with vitamins and exercise. Mr. Nimo, you have no idea until you have your own baby. By that I mean carrying and birthing said child.
I had a horrible experience with my third child my beautiful daughter. About three months after she was born this horrible feeling came over me, I was afraid that I was going to kill her, I did the right thing and called mental health. A woman came out and just sat and talked with me after a while I was fine. Let me say this she was a wonderful child in every way, I say was because she is an adult now beautiful and smart 4.0 average in school, college, she has a wonderful job in medicine.
Women have been having postpartum depression since the beginning of time.
Women are usually surrounded by family after giving birth as time goes by this support starts to get less and less until you find yourself alone with your child. Husbands are usually no support at all, poor men just don’t know how to deal with it. They like making the child but after that it’s turn over and go to sleep.
I don’t know what the solution is to the problem. Certainly giving psychotropic drugs is just a band aid but if it can help mothers get through that time of hormone changes and back to normal it just may be worth it.
Mr. Nimo look at it this way. A woman’s body after giving birth is like a pin ball machine, hormones and chemicals are bouncing all over the place.

Thanks for the article! I had not known about this. Scary. These psycho-active, mood altering drugs are being used ay too much.
Example: my 4-year-old nephew was diagnosed with ADD (by the day care / –garten nurse some sort of state employee). And then the poor child was referred to a psychiatrist and given Ritalin!!!! Why? Because he would not sit still and liked to play rough with the other kids. Well, I told my sister-in-law, “that’s what 4 year olds do.” Her response? “Oh, he’s so much more quiet now. Never questions anything! Perfect little gentleman. It makes life so much easier for me and his teachers.” Yeah, turn the kid into a zombie so you can watch Oprah or attend your teacher unions meetings. Disgusting. His brain is now in a highly formative stage and it is being warped by DRUGS! Of course I am considered the family nit for suggesting something is wrong with this picture.

Maybe I was too busy with twins to notice any sort of postpartum depression. But I didn’t notice anything in the way of mental issues after my c-section. We did get ourselves out of the hospital as soon as possible and did everything as minimal as possible. I refused to take pain pills for unless I was in so much pain I couldn’t move. The kids are 9mos and still unvaccinated. We are all doing great. I’m back to my original weight. I’m happy and healthy. We eat as organic as possible and use organic cleaners but mostly just vinegar water. These sort of articles always make me ask what women did a few centuries ago when they had kids. How did they run their house, farm, ranch with kids running under foot? With no vaccines and no chemicals and no drugs? Were they outside of their mind? I don’t think so. I think they were perfectly content and happy and healthy. Just get moving, quit wallowing around in your own self pity and work hard and be happy with what you have. And don’t let other people tell you what to do, make up your own mind and stick to your decisions.

I’ve been pregnant twice, and both times it was the best mentally I’ve ever felt in my life. After my first son was born, I had what I’d call thought problems, thinking dark thoughts. It lasted months, but, I knew it was happening and just kept hold of myself. After my second son, I was fine, no problems. I never took any medication, and probably never would. If they are telling you to take meds while you’re even pregant, well, if I would have done that I would have missed out on some really natural happy times. I found the baby blues thing, or for me dark thoughts, to be controlable, for myself anyway, and like I said, with my second child, no baby blues at all.

Thanks alex. I think the same thing. I have two lovely children myself and never experienced any kind of blues, but I grew up self reliant and rely on any kind of drugs. I have always been told by knowledgeable people, never, ever take any drugs while pregnant or nursing as everything passes to baby and those things that they want to shove down women’s throat these days are toxic with a capital T. Never take any drugs, not even anything stronger than a Tylenol for godawful headache and even then sparingly. Just my $0.02 worth of advice.

Thinking about the article…. I think it is a shame what the pharma companies are doing. The women in my family are all on ‘MEDS’ to cope with this or that. There is an excuse for every dose of prozac, zoloft and all the phsych drugs out there that are being pushed to women and children. What is wrong with our society? If life is too hard to deal with in the city….move! I guess the most confussing part is that doctors can actually convince these women that they and/or their children NEED these poisons to function. That is what my sisters say! “We NEED this so we can focus! We NEED this so we are not tense and angry!” WHAT? One of my sisters is on three different phsych meds…and she is a smart, capable person. What happened here?

i have read the bill. if passed, which i believe it will, will provide the backdoor to further legislation or “medical” action to have children taken from their parents if their are found “unable” to raise a child and then be taken to be raised by the state. in my opinion, the only mentally unstable people are those who believe that we should all have help from organizations, people groups, charities, government, community groups, etc. from here on out, my answer will be no thank you, i am doing just fine on my own and will not require your assistance. i will no longer participate.

The problem is the govt. and Feminism being used to break up the family. By saying the man isn’t needed and you the female can do everything. So what is going to happen now, have women walking around drugged out and being able to be influenced by suggestions from the govt. police, welfare etc. etc.. What this also does is puts her on the first few steps of the mental evaluation game. Lets say that they don’t like what you are doing (govt. police whomever), they could go to a welfare office or by themselves and say that she isn’t mentally stable and use the drugs and other things as a tool to help them in the evaluation process. Govt. know that if a society has a strong sense of family connection mother father children etc., they would look to that first before govt.. Also it helps a nation to have a strong moral fiber when you have a strong household. Big Pharma isn’t looking at this as a way to help women, they are looking at this as a way to make money. And the politicians are looking at this as a way of control.
