But the Homeland Security Department accused the GAO of having unrealistic expectations of how the Internet could be managed if millions began to telework from home at the same time as bored or sick schoolchildren were playing online, sucking up valuable bandwidth.
Experts have for years pointed to the potential problem of Internet access during a severe pandemic, which would be a unique kind of emergency. It would be global, affecting many areas at once, and would last for weeks or months, unlike a disaster such as a hurricane or earthquake.
H1N1 swine flu has been declared a pandemic but is considered a moderate one. Health experts say a worse one — or a worsening of this one — could result in 40 percent absentee rates at work and school at any given time and closed offices, transportation links and other gathering places.

How do *they* just “cut off the Internet”? It doesn’t work like that. The Internet is a highly redundant internetwork with an innumerable number of access points. If your ISP were to not route your data up the chain to the next network, you could easily bypass that by hopping on a network that IS interconnected or by dialing into a network with the same advantage. That is, if the major residential ISPs were to stop routing their customers to the Internet as you know it, and you had to reach outside of your ISPs network, you could find another entry point from a network that DOS have access via other means.
Now, all things being fair, if the major ISPs did stop routing their customers out of their network, then it would be like ‘cutting off the Internet’ for a lot of people. Or, the root DNS nameservers (that are located geographically and network diverse) could be all be shut down [unlikely] and name resolution service wouldn’t be available (however many popular website’s IPs would still be cached to their name, and more than likely most DNS admins would disable the timeout to keep them resolving for their customers in the event of a root nameserver outage). They could also force the top tier ISPs to stop routing, or attack them. But the Internet was made to be very redundant and resistant to attacks electronic, physical, political, and otherwise.

I think it is a bad idea for the government to do that. Would make people mad. And people who don’t care about the issue do care about their computer access to the Internet.

I don’t know who is writing this for Reuters, but it is obvious that they do NOT know their subject, nor the technology behind it, just as “B” so eloquently points out.
What concerns me is that putting DHS (or any other government agency, for that matter) in charge of the Internet would only screw things up even more! For example, what about people who are ALREADY working from home, over the Internet? The “Work from Home” crowd is ALREADY a growing minority, for which Government Intervention will only cause more problems. As a friend of mine often says: “There is NO problem which Government Intervention CANNOT make MUCH worse!”

Where I live (very rural) many people still do not have the Internet. But they all have TVs with DVD players. So no matter what happens with the Net, we should all be making copies of Alex’s new DVD “Fall of the Republic”.
I found an easy way to make copies that work on even cheap DVD players. Since then I’ve handed out about 120 copies Obama Deception and I plan to do the same or more for this one (which I think is even better).
We can use the Fall of the Republic to wake up the people in our own towns. Then, when it all comes crashing down, we’ll all have people we can “work” with.

Not only that, but all ISPs have to have some method of tracking illegal or harrassing activity (such as that idiot who tried to list physical addresses of police on the Infowars website, for retaliation purposes, some months ago) on the web. That way, law enforcement can show up at the miscreant’s door with “Mister Handcuffs” and stop the insanity, before it gets COMPLTETELY out of hand! It’s a matter of self protection for the ISP and/or web site owner.

For many, the internet is their main way to get news, real news; and if they were to close off certain sites, which would they choose and why choose those particular sites?
Again, I think they’re placing all of their chess pieces strategically so that communication is difficult or impossible. If communication on the ground is impossible, as was the case with Katrina, then very few will know what’s going on and even fewer will understand the whole picture.
Keep watching each move they make as if you’re playing chess against them and you’ll see more of what’s down the line and when.

Are you kidding? In my community crank dealers and thieves wander our streets with impunity. The police are always hijacking DUIs, traffic violations, and kids old enough to be drafted but not old enough to drink beer. They stud right the f--- up on decent citizens that demand respect for their rights but don’t seem to have the nerve to go after the real criminals. Most of them would s--- themselves in a real fight with actual dangerous people.
There are good cops, I know some of them, but even they are fully sold on the system and they are taught, daily, that our rights are really privileges granted by the government and the government apparently needs them back.

I have the same type of community. I have figured out, though after many years of observation and self-thought, that we have made this problem by accepting the way things are everyday. People have to start making choices out of love instead of living in fear like the fiends do everyday. We shouldn’t be putting these people in jail anyways without thinking about how the system in place can create such an instance. The bigger question, look behind the problem and think that they are a part of your race yet they are treated like they aren’t you and you aren’t them. We treat ourselves like complete strangers though we’ve known each other for years. We have been made to believe that this is it . This isnt how it’s supposed to be and I have just become of age to start relaying my messages. I will not stop telling what i know.

It’s off-topic but I finished watching “Fall of the Republic”, piecemeal, 20 or 30 minutes every day in the last few days. It’s a very good documentary and I will recommend it to my friends who understand english, and I will suggest they watch other INFOWARS films, too.

I say each person takes the time and pick up there cell phone or what ever and starts calling there family, friends and people 1 by 1 to try to awake them to the truths, If you cant take that type of simple action, then your really not doing anything.
I personally do it myself daily, people needing help escaping the credit problems so they can afford to live, so they can afford to keep family safe for future, they come to me for help, I teach every single day for FREE by appointments, it nice to know i have job that give me freedom to open minds and help people with REAL issue like credit, and the financial traps the banks try to put us in, credit is something NO American has ever learned in high school or college!
It not anyone’s fault expect our own for not being willing to accept what we don’t know and our willingness to learn, we do have some rights left, especially against the for profit credit bureaus that work for the banks, and in today’s credit driven society it about making them work for you instead of against you, it just system, you either let it control your life or you take control of the system!

Just look to Microsoft, they will be the focal point for the internet going down. Their OS is on 95%+ of the computers and servers in operation today. By the way: Several filesharing sites have been collectively experiencing “site not found” messages, total server crashes, and/or massive slowdowns from my viewpoint “suddenly” shortly after it was reported that we handed over the Internet regulator to the UN. Just saying. . . Testing phase? I don’t know if it’s my ISP or not, but still. Every other site works fine (so far).

fall back on if the worst happens and the net gets blocked so all you ol 80’s techies like myself break out the 14.4 baud modems you may need them again makes me remember the good ol days with my ibm 386 and my 14.4 which was top of the line high tech at the time this idea may save lives or atleast help us stay informed

Regarding the Internet, recall that it was and still is basically a DoD invention via their original ARPANET program. The US maintains the root (”.”) servers, and could in fact severly restrict or eliminate internet access for ‘undesirables’, especially so within the US. This could happen quickly and without warning or recourse. There is plenty of talk lately about food and resource storage, but nothing about information storage. For example, do you have hard copies of all your account info, personal documents, reference info, etc currently online? First-aid, survival tips, food storage and martial law tactics should likewise be copied to your local disk (don’t just save the hyperlink). Best bet is to simply print it out before it’s “redacted” or no longer available. Knowledge is power, and post collapse may be the only wealth we still have.
