CARBON CLIFF, Illinois — There’s a post election rush to buy firearms and ammunition. President-Elect Barack Obama may want to stop the manufacture of several semi-automatic weapons and that’s triggered a nationwide run on guns and ammunition.
Business is budding at Carbon Cliff Bait & Tackle, a store that’s sold guns and ammo for 50 years.
“Yes for now business is good. How long it’ll last, we don’t know,” says Margaret Pankey, Carbon Cliff Bait & Tackle owner.
Margaret Pankey says the recent boom in gun and ammo sales stems from fear. The election of Barack Obama has many gun owners wondering if prices or their rights could change.
“Just before the election it started picking up and since the election it has been really busy,” says Pankey.
Margaret hears their concerns.
“Some say, they’re never going to get my guns, I’ll bury them,” laughs Pankey.
In 1999 as an Illinois State Senator, Obama once outlined a gun plan which would increase federal taxes by 500 percent on the sale of firearms and ammunition, but as a U.S. Senator, Obama never pushed for any such tax.
Still, many aren’t taking chances. Gun and ammo sales at Carbon Cliff Bait & Tackle are up 30 percent. Guns for home protection are going the quickest.
