At least fourteen suspected cases of narcolepsy have been reported so far that appeared among children after they were given vaccinations against the H1N1 virus.

On Monday, the National Institute for Health and Welfare sent physicians a letter reminding them that they are to report any suspicious cases. In addition, the Institute is accessing data on the issue from abroad.

An expert group is to meet on Tuesday to consider whether or not H1N1 vaccinations should be suspended in Finland.

The Institute’s Vaccine Department Director Terhi Kilpi says that the cases of narcolepsy may have another cause. She pointed out that although the swine flu vaccine has been used worldwide, a possible link to narcolepsy has only been reported in Sweden and Finland.
