Hansen: Obama ‘has four years to save Earth’

Barack Obama has only four years to save the world. That is the stark assessment of Nasa scientist and leading climate expert Jim Hansen who last week warned only urgent action by the new president could halt the devastating climate change that now threatens Earth. Crucially, that action will have to be taken within Obama’s first administration, he added.

Soaring carbon emissions are already causing ice-cap melting and threaten to trigger global flooding, widespread species loss and major disruptions of weather patterns in the near future. “We cannot afford to put off change any longer,” said Hansen. “We have to get on a new path within this new administration. We have only four years left for Obama to set an example to the rest of the world. America must take the lead.”
Hansen said current carbon levels in the atmosphere were already too high to prevent runaway greenhouse warming. Yet the levels are still rising despite all the efforts of politicians and scientists.
Only the US now had the political muscle to lead the world and halt the rise, Hansen said. Having refused to recognise that global warming posed any risk at all over the past eight years, the US now had to take a lead as the world’s greatest carbon emitter and the planet’s largest economy. Cap-and-trade schemes, in which emission permits are bought and sold, have failed, he said, and must now be replaced by a carbon tax that will imposed on all producers of fossil fuels. At the same time, there must be a moratorium on new power plants that burn coal – the world’s worst carbon emitter.

I understand everybody’s reluctance to believe anything that the government or anybody who every worked for a govt agency has to say about anything. Our societies have been very trusting of our leaders. We now realise this may have largely been a very big mistake. When you start anything on a foundations of lies and personal agendas, you’re gonna have a hard time squeezing truth from it. Mr Hansen may be in the same position as many Government employees. He is TOLD what position to take when he speaks publicly. If it IS true that we DO indeed have rising CO2 levels (and I can’t know for sure, because I am not an environmental scientist, taking samples and testing) the question is, why. Again, not being privy to raw data and the expertise, how can any average person know, one way or another, what the hell is really happening. I do know this however, there is much debate and alternative opinion offered by many experts (about the co2 issue) who are (maybe) not so controlled by agenda or employer. Many climate experts stand in direct contrast to Mr Hansen’s public stance. Really, there is SO MUCH that we are NOT told, about so many issues, when you I think about it, we just allowed ourselves to become these big fat sitting ducks. No good quacking on about it now, saying ‘he said, she said’. Just pick which stuffing you want shoved down your craw. I reckon Alex is gonna give the best info available at any given time, so this little black duck will keep coming by here, picking up the good bread. Go Alex. You are a honey and a hero.

Its the foolish naming of “global warming” rather than climate change that helps confuse. Some places get hotter, others colder, some places receive more rain, other places suffer drought, its all climate change. As an evolutionary biologist I can suggest that climate change is indeed a major issue, ecosystems are waaaaay more complex than joe citizen and politicians understand. HOWEVER even if you produced a device that could sequest all excess greenhouse gasses AND produce infinite free non polluting electricity for the entire planet (yay, world saved apparantly) we are still fucked. We have only 30% of rainforests left, we have bugger all fish left in the sea, we have nitrification and pollution of waterways, we have fuck all nutrients left in the soil, we have a MASSIVE reduction in biological diversity, we have an extinction rate that is on par with the dinosaur extinction event – these are the problems, solve these and the climate change issue will also be solved. We are looking at and trying to solve the end result, not the causes, ambulance at bottom of cliff situation. It is monumentally frustrating, everything is divided into specific groups of knowledge, WHERE ARE THE COMPREHENSIVISTS?! I think Bucky Fuller was the last (though Jaques Fresco seems close)

From the data, it is reasonable to say that we are on a downward temperature trough of several years duration, which is riding upon an upward trend of decades or perhaps centuries, which, in turn, is within an interglacial period of a dozen or so millenia timeframe. The current trough is logically due to the sunspot minimum which we have just passed through, leading back to the longer term behaviour of the trend, other factors not intervening. This says nothing, of course, about man’s contribution, which may still be indeterminate. Acid rain, and other pollution issues are sufficiently established, however.
As a retired scientist, who, by the way, is routinely critical of corporate and government agenda, I nonetheless feel that the environmental arguments, particularly that of global warming, are dangerously polarised. Any and all data, whether or not adulterated by a sinister agenda or the vagaries of grantsmanship to mislead the public, is now summarily sent to the gallows as direct evidence that we are immediately subject to a flatuance tax, to be immediately followed by a personal trip to the gas chamber. True renewables, with nuclear as a temporary bridge, efficient public transit, a more efficient and humane workweek seem far better answers to a stable future than a suffocating livestock tax and the taking of our means to defend ourselves. To defeat the greed and lack of human compassion which the holders of the traditional Dutch banking have for so long held over mankind, the disciplines of truth, not unbridled emotion, must be our first priorities. As well, who can intelligently trust the complex calculations of our future to those who do not yet know the difference between to, too and two, or there, their and they’re. Are the solutions to the real global problems now degenerated to a choice between gobal submission to a dictotorship on the one hand, and mass and heat differential equations at the hands of those who have not yet mastered fourth grade English?

Human beings adapt–that’s why we have brains. If the sea levels rise (I don’t think they will, but whatever), then how about people move further inland? It’s not the end of the world if other species go extinct–correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t that tend to happen throughout the history of life on this planet? Two MMGW protagonists appearing on C-Span’s Washington Journal agreed with my phoned-in comment, that there seemed to be a discrepancy in Al Gore’s infamous temperature/CO2 graph. While Gore said that global temperatures rose following CO2 level increases, the opposite was true; historically, CO2 level increases actually followed rises in temperature.
Well, this is a pretty salient point, ya think?! But these gentlemen went on to say that, while what I had stated was true, other data, that supported MMGW, had since been collected. That data, they said, was, unfortunately, over my head.
The only thing over my head is a vast expanse of sky that, try as we might, is subject to events much grander than man’s CO2 emissions. What I do understand is that there is an apparent solar systemic warming, fueled, obviously, by changes in the temperature of the Sun. What I understand as well is that the stats since 1998 show a slight cooling trend here on Earth. And what is truly unfortunate is that global taxation based on carbon footprint follows an apparent global pattern of economic rape.

I’ve noticed a severe drop in the amount of chemtrails in the Seattle area. Subsequently I have noticed that the weather has drastically changed.. Is anyone else noticing this? Much like all over the country, the Pacific NW has been witnessing record low temperatures, and I’m wondering if this has anything to do with the lack of chemtrails?
Any theories or opinions? I would appreciate them..

wow, it seems that nobody thinks that global warming is real? i mean of course the sun is getting hotter, but the overall cooling on the planet is due to particals in the air blocking the sun. once those go away, which happened on 911 when airplanes weren’t flying the temperature rises. and indeed it did by 2-3 degrees that day which is very significant. meaning: the warming is currently being masked by continuing use of fossil fuels, though not quite if one considers the massive climate change and increase of natural disaster that has happened just in the past 30 years. of course you can blah blah blah all you want, death is inevitable for all of us anyway, and i don’t think the earth’s balancing systems really care what you think.

We have destroyed this planet in a mere 100 years.. Why are there skeptics and people that don’t believe. This will affect everyone.. it doesn’t matter how much money you have. The billion dollar oil tycoons need to help out on this as well!! It was said that when the first settlers came to America, you could smell the trees miles out into the ocean. All the trees which produce oxygen have been cut down or being destroyed in forest fires. All I know is that alternative engines and fusion power need to be implemented a.s.a.p. and who cares what country loses money or what oil tycoon loses money. These are the people that should be implementing the changes. The oceans of the world are soiled, plankton no longer grows and in some locations of the planet, methane gas is escaping into the atmosphere from the ocean floor. It’s not the end of the earth…. it’s the end of the human race if we all don’t act now. It’s a global problem and the whole globe needs to do their part.

I dont think anyone is saying that the world is going to end, or even humans will beccome extinct, its more about the loss of ‘civilization’ as we understand it – which, in all honesty, may not be such a bad thing, HOWEVER as a member of the species in question, I think it an absurd waste (and for what, the religion of money and power?) that the last xxxxx years of technological, social, spiritual, scientific, whatever knowledge/evolution/understanding/ advancement should be so monumentally impeded by something as simple to solve as not being too greedy – ESPECIALLY when we have the technology/understanding/resources to fix it. At the end of the day, I have no problem calling myself a devout atheist (is that an oxymoron?), I believe in evolution, I can offer tangible (like, you can touch it) evidence of such and my worldview/metaphysical understanding excludes the existence of an omnipotent, omnipresent sentient deity presiding over all events BUT, I could be wrong and if St Peter welcomes me to the pearly gates and says “no go bro, you didnt believe, down you go” then fair enough, ill die by my sword I guess, I dont think so though, ill bet my death on it! For accuracy, its taken more than 100 years, the epic of gilgamesh (3000y b.c) is basically one of environmental degregation, and pretty much all empires have fallen (after a period of pre apocalyptic hedonism) by over exploitation of resources – the problem is not new, it is part of a fundamental flaw in the species understanding. My hypothosis, is that as evolution, being in the crudest of terms “an orginism evolves by adapting/adaptations to its environment” is that H. Sapiens sapiens (I prefer H. Sapiens economicus – what an academic wanker!) Is in near complete and implicit control of its/the environment and as such, as an organism evolves by adapting TO its environment, the species is in control of its, and indeed many other (if not most) evolution. We have sort of won the evolutionary game. Evolution (again in the crudest of terms) occurs along 4 primary facets, and it is by outcompeting other organisms in any of these fields that determines the ’survival of the fittest’ The ability to reproduce (humans no longer need males, we can invitro fertilise and have millions generations of spermazoa stored cryogenically) the ability to extend range (humans can live ANYWHERE on earth and can even survive extra terrestrially) the ability to defend itself (we have the big red button and whatever secret crazy shit the powers that be may or may not have) and the ability to aquire water/nutrition (humans currently produce 1.5x enough food for the global population and near infinite supplies of drinking water is available if we tried, desalination etc) so for all intents and purposes, WE WIN. We, as a species dont quite get it though so we invent all sorts of pseudo measures of ‘fittest’, such as money, or religion, or athletic prowess, or academic prowess ad infinitum. This is what we have always understood, so we replicate it, not quite realizing that we dont need to anymore. if we think about it. Soooo frustrating!!

What I would love to know from the creationists, Wudjaxpect you may be able to help out here, is if things are indeed created, then who/what created the God that you understand? And who/what created that entity and so on ad infinitum. A couple of other questions… in genesis, after the consumption of the forbidden fruit, why does ‘god’ state “Now you have become like US” not me, US, this infers peers – “I am the only god but I am a jealous god” also infers peers, as it is impossible to be jealous without something else against which to be jealous of (is jealousy a form of coveting, which I understand is against a certain set of commandments. Also, man was created ‘perfect’ and in gods image apparently, so if the consumption of said fruit is an imperfect decision, eg original sin, then either we were not created perfect (as to be perfect would prevent imperfect decisions) OR god itself, if we truly were made in its image is also imperfect. Im also curious about creationists ideas on dinosaurs – did Humans and dinosaurs co-exist? (which I can find no evidence of in the bible, quran or any other religious text) or were there at least two distinct creation events?, again I cannot seem to find this anywhere in religious text, nor can I find anything that states that any fossils found of such creatures are a test of faith, where did this argument arise? Also, in the bible during the begatting stage, the bible states that these guys were living for 900 years etc, truly impressive longevity – please explain. Again, I do not propose that you are wrong and I am correct, I am simply asking to be informed by someone who understands creation to be true to explain the rationale behind this worldview that my own understanding deems to be somewhat contradictory. Its all part of my genuine thirst for ‘truth’. Being one who enjoys debate, I like to be reasonably well informed, to this end I have read the bible (both testaments) the quoran and several other religious text (plus I had to as part of my sociology anthropology degree

The main cause of global warming is the sun, it’s part of the earths cycle to warm up then cool down and nothing we do will change it.
Most of the co2 is stored in the oceans when there is increased heat from the sun it warms up the oceans which then release the co2.
The global warming idiots have manipulated the facts by turning around the evidence and saying that its the co2 levels that are causing the rise in temperature by trapping the heat.
Unfortunately there are too many gullible people who believe all this crap.
