Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State: Business as Usual

“Hillary Clinton plans to accept the job of secretary of state offered by Barack Obama, who is reaching out to former rivals to build a broad coalition administration,” reports the Guardian. “Clinton would be well placed to become the country’s dominant voice in foreign affairs, replacing Condoleezza Rice. Since being elected senator for New York, she has specialized in foreign affairs and defense.”

As the Newsmax website notes, of the 47 appointees named so far to transition posts or offices, 31 have ties to the Clinton administration. In fact, Obama’s transition chief, John Podesta, was Bill Clinton’s chief of staff from 1998 to 2001. Other Clinton-era appointees include former Deputy Secretary of Defense John White, former State Department official Wendy Sherman, and former deputies to National Security Adviser Sandy Berger, Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin, Defense Secretary William Perry, and Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. Other Clintonites on the Obama team include Michael Froman, who served as Rubin’s chief of staff, and Christopher Edley, who served Clinton and is married to a former Clinton deputy chief of staff. Soon after Obama was elected, he announced Rep. Rahm Emanuel, a senior adviser to Clinton, to serve as his chief of staff.

Democrats like to pretend that Obama represents “change” and the new administration will be a departure from the previous Bush administration. However, as the Clinton legacy demonstrates, it will be more of the same, especially in regard to foreign policy. Let’s take a look at Clinton’s track record.

Bill Clinton’s “crimes range from ad hoc bombings to boycotts and sanctions designed to starve into submission, to support of ethnic cleansing in brutal counterinsurgency warfare, and to aggression and devastation by bombing designed to return rogues to the stone age and keep them there,” writes Edward S. Herman.

In 1993, Clinton exploited the absurd pretext that Saddam Hussein had attempted to assassinate his predecessor, Bush Senior, and in response bombed Baghdad, killing eight civilians, including the internationally renowned artist, Layla al-Attar. Clinton’s action was a clear violation of international law and mindful of this violation the Clinton team cited the right to self defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter and pointed to Reagan’s illegal bombing of Libya in 1986 (as former Israeli Mossad agent Victor Ostrovsky points out, Reagan’s bombing of Libya was a direct result of an Israeli false flag operation called Operation Trojan).

Bill Clinton enthusiastically supported and enforced Bush Senior’s sanctions against Iraq after the Gulf War. In response to this engineered genocide, resulting in the murder of over 500,000 Iraqi children, Clinton’s Secretary of State, Madeline Albright, told Leslie Stahl of CBS on May 11, 1996, that this crime against humanity was “worth it.”

In regard to the criminal sanctions imposed on Iraq, Herman writes:

The most monumental of Clinton’s war crimes… has been his policy of sanctions on Iraq, supplemented by the maintenance of intense satellite surveillance and regular bombing attacks that have often resulted in civilian casualties. UNICEF reports that in 1999 more than 1 million Iraqi children under 5 were suffering from chronic malnutrition, and some 4,000-5,000 children are dying per month beyond normal death rates from the combination of malnutrition and disease. Death from disease was greatly increased by the shortage of potable water and medicines, that has led to a 20-fold increase in malaria (among other ailments). This vicious sanctions system, causing a creeping extermination of a people, has already caused more than a million excess deaths, and it is claimed by John and Karl Mueller that Clinton’s “sanctions of mass destruction” have caused “the deaths of more people in Iraq than have been slain by all so-called weapons of mass destruction [nuclear and chemical] throughout all history”…

Clinton also violated the national sovereignty of the Sudan and Afghanistan. He murdered unknown numbers in Afghanistan in a PR stunt after documented CIA asset Osama bin Laden supposedly attacked U.S. embassies in Africa. Clinton bombed a pharmaceutical factory in the Sudan, a major source of medical drugs in that poor country.

Clinton’s foreign policy was simply more of the same, an unswerving continuation of the murderous foreign policy actions of his predecessors. He supported Turkey in its ongoing mass murder of indigenous Kurds, he escalated U.S. support of Colombian death squads, and tightened sanctions against Cuba, most notably banning the sale of U.S. food, water treatment chemicals, and medicines. He was well aware of the brutal Indonesian plan to invade East Timor and slaughter its residents.

Clinton and his Iron Maiden, Madeleine Albright, facilitated and laid the groundwork for the bombing of Serbia. Clinton and his Secretary of State “didn’t bother themselves with international law. They flouted it. International law clearly states that one country can attack another one only when it is itself under attack, about to be attacked, or when the U.N. Security Council grants permission. Belgrade was not attacking the United States or any of the NATO countries involved in the bombings. And the United States intentionally avoided the Security Council because Russia and China were likely to veto any military action,” The Progressive wrote in May of 1999.

NATO and the U.S. flew 25,000 sorties and used 14,000 missiles and bombs in the former Yugoslavia, including antipersonnel cluster bombs and depleted uranium. Clinton’s “humanitarian” attack against Serbia, generally supported by Democrats and so-called liberals, was nothing if not a brazen war crime. William Rockler, former prosecutor of the Nuremberg War Crimes Tribunal, comments:

The [1999] bombing war violates and shreds the basic provisions of the United Nations Charter and other conventions and treaties; the attack on Yugoslavia constitutes the most brazen international aggression since the Nazis attacked Poland to prevent “Polish atrocities” against Germans. The United States has discarded pretensions to international legality and decency, and embarked on a course of raw imperialism run amok.

Clinton and NATO targeted schools, hospitals, farms, bridges, roads communication centers, and waterways in Serbia. The bombing of chemical plants and oil refineries polluted the Danube river, a source of drinking water for ten million people in the region.

It is not an exaggeration to claim that an Obama administration, staffed with former Clintonites, will return to these sort of war crimes and flagrant violations of international law. In fact, it does not matter if a Democrat or Republican occupies the White House, for these massive crimes are the policy of the ruling elite, not a particular faction of the One Party system that takes its marching orders from the New World Order, regardless of the front man behind the desk in the Oval Office.
