A Monroe man was arraigned Tuesday on charges that he climbed through a window and sexually assaulted a 9-year-old girl in her bedroom.
Bergin Perez, 24, was indicted by an Orange County grand jury on felony counts including predatory sexual assault against a child, burglary and sexual abuse. He appeared Tuesday morning in Orange County Court, where his lawyer, Dennis McCormick of the Orange County Legal Aid Society, entered a not-guilty plea on his behalf.
Chief Trial Assistant District Attorney John Geidel told Judge Nicholas De Rosa that Perez climbed through the young victim’s bedroom window and sexually abused her. When Perez learned he was a suspect in the assault, Geidel said, he fled to Virginia and New York officials had to extradite him.
Geidel asked De Rosa to keep Perez’s bail at the $500,000 cash or $800,000 bond fixed by the local court, arguing that Perez, a native of Honduras who is in the U.S. illegally, had already been deported once and came back.
