Anti-smoking forces won a long-awaited victory Thursday as the House passed legislation that would give the federal government key controls over the tobacco industry for the first time.

    • A d v e r t i s e m e n t
    • efoods
The measure, passed 298-112, gives the Food and Drug Administration authority to regulate — but not ban — cigarettes and other tobacco products.

The Senate could take up its version of the bill later this month, and supporters are confident they can overcome opposition from tobacco-state senators. The White House supports the legislation, a shift from the Bush administration which threatened to veto a House-passed measure last year.

President Barack Obama has spoken publicly about his own struggles to kick a smoking habit.

“This is truly a historic day in the fight against tobacco, and I am proud that we have taken such decisive action,” said Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Henry Waxman, D-Calif., the bill’s sponsor. “Today we have moved to place the regulation of tobacco under FDA in order to protect the public health, and now we all can breathe a little easier.”

      mr activist Reply:

i disagree – caffeine is only unhealthy in regular large consumption. smoking is always bad for you.

      JTCoyote Reply:

That is not the point. The point is that it is not a government prerogative, and way outside of their jurisdiction constitutionally… if people are convinced that something is bad, they will take care of it themselves outside of government, or at the local level…

I might point out, that the reason why the American Indians did not suffer from pellagra, was because of the use of tobacco, a plant that is the richest known source of the complete vitamin B 17 complex there is… the Indians not only invented chewing tobacco, as well as smoking it along with other herbs, but they also used it in cooking.

What is bad for you when you smoke is not the tobacco, it is the litany of chemicals from industrial fertilizers and pesticides that you smoke as well.

By your logic it won’t be long before eating food will be considered dangerous to your health by the government, somehow giving it validity… though most of us know that it already is unhealthy and in many cases much worse than the mere smoking of tobacco, because of the food additives, pesticides and chemical fertilizers, and the processes that are used to produce our “food”.

I have never smoked and don’t drink coffee but did you not see the movie “Demolition Man” – all sorts of food including caffeine were band. It’s just another way government uses laws to control their citizens.

The same infowarriors who complain that it is their “right to smoke” are the same ones who throw bitch fits about chemtrails.

JT… I didnt know tobacco was a complete source for vitamin B17… its interesting tho considering that it is banned (B17 that is)… although it is used in other countries as a cure for cancer. I know the apricot seed is another good source of vitamin B17 as well…

Thanks for the info… ill def remember it!

      ~J

      JTCoyote Reply:

It is the complete Vitamin B 17 complex, that means all of the B’s are contained there in edible form… The Indians used to dry and chop the tobacco leaves and add it to the corn they ground as flour on grind stones made of lime stone or other sedimentary rock which provided minerals … Tobacco was used in stews and elsewhere.

The 4 staples of the Indian diet were all smoked in dry form in a ceremony of thanksgiving to the Great Spirit for their life sustaining staples. They were called The 4 Sacred Sisters, Corn, Beans, Squash, and Tobacco… These staples, along with occasional game, provided the basic nutrition needed for survival… everything else was icing on the cake, so to speak…

It’s not about smoking or coffee or sugar or gardens, etc,etc,- It’s about control,it’s about the slave being taught to take it over and over again.Laws for this,Laws for that- just for the slaves not for the masters.Look now they don’t pay taxes, they think there above it.

no youre wrong – eating unhealthily only affects your own health. smoking affects all those around you. second hand smoke is a killer. sitting next to someone cramming their mouth full of junk doesnt hurt anybody but the person involved.

thats why im behind regulation of tobacco, but NOT behind regulation of other things.

by the way dont listen to the person above trying to tell you tobacco is good for you. tobacco contains carcinogens (cancer causing chemicals), and thats before you add all the other dangerous additives that you find in cigarettes.

DIY thats retarted. I can smoke if i want to, I can also inhale barium oxide if i want to, but if i don’t want ot inhale barium oxide? oh i guess i’ll just have to deal with it.

      fuck that

so is drinking and so is stress but noone regulates that. I think when a government is saying what you can and can’t put in your body or do with your body or where you can go it’s game over. I think smoking is bad but so is alcohol and so are vaccines and processed foods but who cares right. Now they own our bodies too. What a wonderful illusion of a free life we live….Not. Hey tell M.A.D.D. that drinking doesn’t effect anyone I dare ya.

      mr activist Reply:

ill explain myself AGAIN! smoking directly detrimentally affects the health of those around you as cigarette smoke is full of carcinogens. second hand smoke is a killer.

if someone is drinking the person next to him/her won’t get cirrhosis of the liver. thats why you cant compare the two. stress cannot realistically be regulated. smoking should be regulated, other things shouldnt – i think by now ive explained why.

There is NO evidence suggesting that, Mr. Activist.
There have been studies showing that more people with mental issues have smoked pot than haven’t, but I can’t help but feel that the same would be true of people without mental disorders – if you could find any, that is.
Without knowing the results to the same question posed in regards to alcohol, cigarettes, coffee, et al, that’s a fairly meaningless statistic, and, at any rate, it would be incorrect to assume that one leads to the other.

    2. Daniel Says:

Soon we will have a war on tobacco and alcohol. You remember how well prohibition worked right? Taxing tobacco heavily already dissuades many people from smoking or encourages them to quit, let it be up to the states to decide tobacco laws.

      Black Sheep Reply:

I think its the opposite the tobacco companies are legal drug dealers and the government gets in on it by taxing you. Soon more drugs may become legal and the government will tax that too and those drugs will either be sold by the tobacco companies or by drug companies. Hey if they let you kill yourself there’s no reason to incarcerate you.

      KGB Reply:

Aye.. note the full article says “…regulate the contents of tobacco products…”, so depending on the verbiage of the legislation, don’t be surprised if this mandates the ability for Government (sponsored by BigChem) to *add* material to make them [sic] “safer” for consumption.

I'm So Bored With The U-S-A Reply:

Unless you’re smoking something along the lines of American Spirits or Drum, pretty much ALL tobacco has been doused with any number of chemical additives, and has been for years.
What’s in a typical, store-bought, American cigarette barely qualifies as plant matter, in my opinion.

It really boils down to do we need control freaks telling others what is good for them? Or you? Or anyone else? I dont think so.

    3. Indi Says:

Thank God. We need the government to control this. We have to put guard rails on everything, because regular people are too dumb to keep themselves alive. If they die, or get killed, then how can the government tax them to death? Does liberty belong in a museum? In a glass case?

      dick largeandall Reply:

If they chose to die let them we are free stupid.

      Outrage Reply:

NO! We DO NOT have to put “guard rails on everything”! There is a humorous essay on “The Lighter Side Of Fatal Accidents” that is ACTUALLY quite true. If you have ever read it, you know what I mean. Fatal “accidents” caused by ones own STUPIDITY is natures way of IMPROVING the natural gene pool. If you are SO STUPID that you can’t survive without all of the government mandated “guard rails”, maybe you shouldn’t actually be here!

Good, tobacco = death, if your one of the idiots that will complain about the government control of tobacco you have no reason to complain they want to put you in a FEMA camp. They want the population to decrease, by regulating tobacco the pharmaceutical-medical-industrial-complex will be taking a big hit, so it will take money out of there pockets and slow down the death rate of us, what the hell is the problem here ?

Why are there bailouts for everybody, including offshore foreign-owned banks, but nothing for the domestic cigarette companies?
Cigarette smokers are enjoying their RIGHT to control what goes into their own bodies…all rights are under attack now so there is a phony war against smokers.

If there was any real concern over the health of smokers, there would be regulations on what can and cannot be put into cigarettes in the first place…instead, these self-appointed nazi do-gooders put some new chemical into cigarettes supposedly to cause them to self-extinguish if they are unused for a few seconds after being lit.

Where are the studies on the effects this NEW chemical has on smoker’s health?

      F**kin’ nazi hypocrites.

(check your pack, the barcode stamp has the letters F.S.C. on it of the chemical is present)

      bill Reply:

Morons… you certainly chose the right handle for yourself! First of all tobacco does not equal death… the chemicals they add to it do. Tobacco is actually proven to enhance one’s ability to think… obviously you’ve never taken advantage of that. One does not avoid the chemicals by avoiding tobacco… they are added to the food, water and air as well… so when they outlaw eating, drinking and breathing for your own good of course… and they’re getting close… I assume you won’t complain or expect smokers to stand up for your rights. Moron!

    7. Carolyne Mas Says:

If people want to smoke, it should be their own business…there are fewer and fewer places for them to go, and many businesses have suffered as a result, especially bars and small restaurants.

Last year, I went on a Holland America cruise with my Mother and son, and in the room on the last day, the left a paper for us to fill out about whether or not we would like to see the ships ban smoking all together. I saw this further prohibition coming.

I myself do not smoke, so if I go, let’s say, to the casino on the ship, where there are a lot of people smoking, and it bothers me, I leave. Maybe it’s because I lived in Germany for four years, where everybody smokes, that I developed the ability to co-exist with other people’s habits that are not necessarily mine.

I just had a friend die 2 days ago who probably died from smoking, more likely from the crap they put in tobacco these days, and he was a 2 pack a day guy at any price…you can shut down all the places where people can smoke, and they still will find a place to smoke. So what does this accomplish?

Clearly it is to make money, and it is not at all for the welfare of anyone, and it’s disgusting to hear Obama gush about how we can all breathe again, and other such nonsense, to manipulate an emotional reaction from people.

The government should never dictate the personal habit of the public. That’s disgusting, and meddlesome. If I want to swing from my window with a cigarette and a bottle of whiskey, it should be my own choice, and I should be the one left to suffer the consequences, not everyone else.

Thank you Carolyne… it’s refreshing to read a well written and well thought out comment on this site. You are absolutely right… it’s obvious that the ptb are trying to kill us so why would they ban or restrict smoking to benefit our health. I have a simple philosophy.. if the govt says don’t do it… do it! If they say do it… don’t do it! In a free world with a truly free market.. you would have bars and restaurants that cater to people who want a smoke free environment and others that would cater to smokers… oh my goodness – free choice! Slaves can’t have that!

The government makes me very angry and causes me stress… thats why I smoke. So if the government cares so much maybe they should just disapear or STFU, and then I wont have a reason to smoke anymore.

      JJ Reply:

Smokers always say they “smoke to relieve stress”. As a non smoker, I just don’t get it. I have stress, but I don’t feel the need to smoke to get rid of it. There are other ways to relieve stress that is all natural and healthy for you. The government and Big Pharma WANT you to think that you need a pill or other method of stress relief.

      JTCoyote Reply:

      Whatever floats your boat…

But to think or espouse that smokers in any way put non-smokers at risk by second hand or third hand smoke is pure fantasy. It is all in order to regulate, and TAX the shit out of those who choose to smoke. The mind manipulators know that the non-smokers being unaware of the truth, will join in and demonize their fellow man for choosing to smoke… This shows the gullibility, the complete manipulability, even stupidity, of the misguided non smoking majority, who in so doing have proven the FALLACY of Democracy!

All of this CRAP is based on BS studies back in the 60’s that subjected lab rats that weighs a pound, to the concentrated extract of 200 cigarettes every day for two weeks in order to start a tumor… That is the same amount of nicotine and resin that a half pack a day smoker, who on average weighs 150 pounds inhales in 13 months!

You could extract the “essential stuff” of any food or drink consumed by the average person in a year, and administer it to a 1lb. lab rat over 2 weeks, and you would get all kind of maladies to appear…

The non smokers SHOULD be out there defending the smoker’s rights, we already have a big enough demon to fight…

In light of the market moving away from the largely failed poisoned product we have been subjected to over the years… toward the much less addictive, much more flavorful and satisfying non chemically manipulated brands now available, this resurgence of the Amer-Indian practice will open more minds than the poison pill closed over the years… maybe this is the globalists fear.

Now I will stop and have a smoke, an organic American Spirit, that as of April 1st, is taxed here in Colorado, at $5.49 a pack and costs just under $8 a pack to purchase… It costs me as a half pack a day smoker $3 in TAX every day to enjoy 10 American Spirits…

And you support this kind of government robbery…? You think the Majority should have the right to control the lives of a minority, engaging in a legal activity, based upon what is clearly a fabrication, a LIE…?!

You are so ignorant of the real figures involving smokers and smoking.
Smokers pay more for insurance than non-smokers and collect LESS for all their premiums paid in.
Smokers are taxed punitively under the pretense that the extra tax will fund health programs but since smokers generally live shorter lives , people like you benefit from the funds smokers pay in but never recoup.

But to complain about that as though your self-righteous indignation is somehow justified by ignorance of the facts, it is just too much hypocrisy to bear whether intentional or incidental.

SMOKERS do more for the economy than YOU do and without them your ass would suffer greatly.

Alot of programs would fold if smokers stopped smoking, then the precious government of yours would come after something YOU like to do in order to fund those programs with a new tax.

    15. trueblue Says:

And virtually no one seems to know how the tests were conducted to determine that “tobacco” is deadly. These tests were done using commercial, packaged cigarettes, which, yes, do contain tobacco, but also 100’s of chemical additives.

    16. truelight Says:

Yeah its funny how so many people bash smokers but alot are the same ones sitting at the bar getting lit. What people fail to see is the fda, gov. etc dont care about the health reasons for the smoker or non smoker, its all about the money. And they have brainwashed the non smoker into thinking that the smoke really poses a threat to them. They have also brainwashed people to think that smokers are 2nd class trash. I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANYONE SMOKE TO MANY CIGS AND CRASH INTO SOMEONE AND KILLING THEM. I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANYONE SMOKE TO MANY CIGS AND WANT TO START FIGHTS OR TEAR SHIT UP. THE LIST GOES ON AND ON. It is all a scam to tax more. The reason they pick cigs instead of beer etc. is they know that a smoker will pay top dollar for a pack because of the addiction. Yeah there are alcoholics that would pay top dollar but you have wayyyyy more social drinkers, partiers, etc. that would not pay top dollar and simply choose something else that the gov. cant tax.

      BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The reason for Adolf Hitlers non smoking Movement or should I say DICTATE!!

Was not for health or as some would believe ONLY An exercise In Control over the people

IT Was really About Making sure your lungs were much more Capable of contracting BIO ATACKS!!!!

All Bio wepons like anthrax require a spore period in your lungs see anthrax process.

this is the same with most weaponized viruses. The bottom line is nicotine resting in the lungs and smoke from Cigarettes moving through and filling all of the tiny spaces in the lungs every time you light up (((( Which is several times a day))) makes the smokers lungs next to imposable to contract and spore most bio weapons Because of the CONSTANT NICOTINE SMOKE CYCLE (( SMOKE PARTICALS ARE SMALLER THEN WEAPONISED BIO PARTICALES AND CAN COVER THEM SEVERAL TIMES OVER!)))
THATS WHY THESE BASTARDS WANT ALL PEOPLE TO STOP SMOKING !!! SO THEY CAN PUMP YOU FULL OF A MUCH FASTER AND CONTAGIOUS DEATH!!!!!!!!!!

      bill Reply:

Well said… I knew there had to be a good reason why they were sooo concerned about our health. I don’t doubt your theory. In addition, nicotine improves cross brain communication by some 35% thus improving the ability to think logically. This was the other reason Hitler banned smoking and added flouride to the water. You can’t have people with the ability to think! Heck he even coined the “Passive smoking” term that has been used to terrify the sheeple into supporting the attack on smokers. The ONLY reason why we are slaves and doomed to disaster is because we do it to ourselves!

      Observer Reply:

      That is interesting.

      BobLeeSwagger Reply:

Actually the particulates in cig smoke are what rests in your lungs, the tars and such- the nicotine moves into the blood stream and targets the nicotinic acetylcholine receptors a4b2 receptors in the brain (I think thats what its called) which is why its so addictive. That said, I agree totally, the lining of the lungs coated with something that would make them impervious to sporulation cycles would really frustrate the effectiveness of a bioweapons attack. I also think this is no more than grabbing an industry they can control completely and make even more money off of than they already do through excise taxation (excessive excise taxation I might add). They dont give a flying fuck about people’s health, follow the money kids…

      This is actually good news.
For years the government has claimed that neither tobacco nor alcohol were drugs.
Now they’re at least acknowledging the obvious, as well as opening a door for the legalization of illicit drugs.
If the government licenses, taxes, and regulates the sale of one highly toxic & addictive substance, they will have to, however grudgingly, concede that the same can be done with others.

There is no refuting with pacifist. It is one of the earliest and most thought out mechanisms of brainwashing that the American people have been under. Any mention of reality to these people gets you instant emotional outbursts and programming. Its quite funny actually how these same people love calling others sheeple, and the like, when in fact the most disastrous effects of the modern propaganda warfare they are themselves under.

If this was 100 years ago, everything would be over already. Traitors dead, and we could get back on to living. But it seems that many entities want this to drag out, and keep telling us that now is not the time, and we should wait until they move on us first. These arguments work on the many, but one will quickly realize that they have been killing us for some time now.

And let us not forget that the founding fathers in the Declaration of Independence made it very clear that the people do in fact have a right, and a DUTY to dissolve and replace a corrupt Government. Meanwhile, the true people that are adhering to that wisdom and direction get called all sorts of things from the so called ‘movement’.

Oh, but they will see, there errors will eventually become evident. And these certain entities that are the so called leaders of the so called movement will also hang from trees when the day comes.

Smoking was supposed to be population control on those smart enough to know the risks, but too stupid to stay away. Now what are we going to do? but it is good knowing that children will be able to breathe easier… me and my sisters having grown up with smoking parents, two of us ended up with athsma… that means 2 out of 3 kids are severly affected… so at least kids won’t have to pay the price… but I do not agree that the government should tell us what to do and regulate for us, since they don’t think that we are smart enough to do it ourselves… if parents want to smoke, they should do it outside away from their kids. Otherwise, i am against government regulation. What next…. coffee? food? well i know with codex alimentarius, they are trying to regulate it so all we have to eat is frankenfood.

      Politically Incorrect Reply:

So in your immense wisdom, the people who pay the bills to keep the household running should be subject to expulsion from their own houses for smoking?

Firstly, I had parents who smoked and none of my brothers or sister got asthma so “junk science” fails to prove your point.

Secondly, this country was able to win a world war even though it supplied cigarettes to the soldiers in the field in “care packages” which also brings your conclusions on smoking into question.

How about we return to what made this country great in the first place?

At what point do we need the government to help us quit smoking? With the sky high tax on cigarettes would they want to lose the revenue stream? Waxman needs to have his ass thrown out of office. I found hilarious that they put a FDA steal on cigarettes to begin with. Proves to you who the FDA is looking out for. With their track record of food inspection so shoty what can you expect the results? So what should I expect E-coli in a pack Pall Malls? Salmonella in Skoal? But this is the FDA maybe they will put more additives to make cigarettes more addictive. You know for your safety and all.

    31. Politically Incorrect Says:

Well, since they want to rewrite all the history books anyways, why not change American history to read that the entire American Indian population was wiped-out by tobacco products and totally avoid the bit about the contaminated blankets supplied by the U.S. Army in it’s germ warfare genocide campaign against the American Indian.

    33. Politically Incorrect Says:

Every year factories pump out BILLIONS of tons of pollutants into the atmosphere and yet smokers get demonized.
Places like China don’t care about the pollution they release and don’t regulate it either…it gets pumped up into the upper-atmosphere and crosses oceans before settling in the healthy lungs of non-smokers and STILL cigarettes get the blame.
Mobile homes have for years been constructed with substandard plastics (pvc, vinyl, various composite plastics and adhesives) and carpeting that degrades releasing chemicals into the environment and that is all documented, but somehow smokers get the bad rep. and have to be dealt with.

This is going too far. The FDA? What a joke! The FDA is a CRIMINAL organization that approves LETHAL psychotropic drugs (and is IN BED with the drug companies) while at the same time bans L-trytophane (a natural relaxant found in turkeys). And our government gives them power to regulate tobacco? Which by the way, is NOT lethal. Cigarrette smoke does NOT cause cancer (like the medical industry wants you to believe). If it does, then how come MILLIONS of people live to be 80 or 90 years old who have smoked all their lives and never get cancer? Duh!!! Just so you all know, the FDA approved Prozac after 1300 people DIED during it’s testing. That’s right THIRTEEN HUNDRED. I know…I helped expose this fact. So, what is this all about anyway? Who needs the FDA? This Obama administration is completely and utterly INSANE! What next???

    38. Gary Bydlo Says:

“This is truly a historic day in the fight against tobacco, and I am proud that we have taken such decisive action,” said Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Henry Waxman, D-Calif., the bill’s sponsor. “Today we have moved to place the regulation of tobacco under FDA in order to protect the public health, and now we all can breathe a little easier.”

Isn’t that interesting? Protect the public health he says? Waxman is IN BED with Psychiatry and drug companies. HE is one of the politicians behind getting LETHAL drugs approved through the FDA!! What a hypocritical son of a bitch! He certainly fits in with the OBUMMA administration. I really am getting sick of these bastards! What’s next? It’s revolution time!!!

    39. Gary Bydlo Says:

    60. Glen2Gs Says:

      FDA to “regulate” Tobacco Products?

Here’s how this will play out…

Smokers will be required to obtain a Rx to purchase Cigarettes….

Doctors will agree to Prescribe, but only in decreasing amounts (30 packs this month…20 packs next month) With mandatory blood tests to determine if the Paitents Nicotine levels are dropping.

People without Health Insurance…No Nicotine for You

People WITH Health Insurance…Insurance Companies will give you a “Set Period of Time” to be “Nicotine Free” with random Blood Tests to follow…or you loose your health insurance…

Nicotine byproducts can be found in the Blood Stream SIX MONTHS after a single Cigarette…
All Nicotine blood tests…are for byproducts…not Nicotine

A “Black Market” will develop…but if you are admitted to the Hospital…and your initial blood work shows nicotine byproducts…Depending upon the nature of the Emergency….you could be denied
      coverage.

Based upon my background as a Hospital Admistrator

The motivation that I see here…is to allow Health Insurers an excuse NOT to pay benefits…

    61. kimpunkrock Says:

First they get the whole world addicted to smoking. Pre-1980’s, cigarette commercials and cig. companies had a number of commercials on TV and even sponsored shows like The Jack Benny Show (Lucky Strike), which was one of the most popular shows on TV back in the 40’s and 50’s and 60’s. TV was filled with smoking commercials. More than you would even believe. All you have to do is check out some DVD’s of old TV shows. The smoking commercials were a part of many of these shows and can be seen on the DVD’s.

So they get everyone addicted to smoking, which they knew was bad, and then play a sick game on the population by virtually outlawing it! The NWO sure does get off on their sick little sadomasochistic games it plays with the people of the world.

    66. DM Says:

This is my first comment on this site. I have to say that the gov. is going to eventually shoot themselves in the food with this tobacco issue. I mean on one hand they say higher taxes and regulations will make people want to quit. The other hand they want to higher tax tobacco stating they need the money to fund public programs. Now wait if you make it to where the taxes and regulations are so out of hand that lets say (not that this would prob happen), all tobacco users quit. Hmmm ok you succeeded to not have tobacco users anymore, but um well how are you going to fund those public programs that rely on money made from tobacco product? They can’t have their cake and eat it too. I also love how they say they smokers to quit so they raise taxes and now want to regulate tobacco, because it causes health issues for other people not just for themselves. Like second hand smoke, and now yes some ridiculous third hand smoke. Well I’m and ex smoker (hubby still is) but I do smokeless tobacco, but my taxes seem to go up at the same time it does for cigarettes. Now how am I effecting anyone else but myself with that. I live in southern CA, and has anyone notice the big plume of smog that lingers of L.A.? And they say smokers are the ones that cause health issues in society, give me a break smokers didn’t cause that plume of smog. So what are they doing to penalize the industries, machines and so forth that cause that? They want to say things like asthma, cancer, and other health issues are from smoking and smokers, hmmm I guess in no way no how that smog in unhealthy for you, that you breath in 24 /7 (in my case, my entire 31 yrs I’ve been alive).

So go ahead gov. blame the tobacco users for everything. In the end you will be scrambling to find the solution to funding public programs, when the money stops/ or is too little from smokers.
