— through the CIA, has actively engaged in global drugs trafficking since the agency’s 1947 founding; it profits hugely from its dealings with local traffickers; so do major US banks and other powerful business and financial interests.
In addition, Washington
— serves the rich at the public’s expense;
— tolerates corruption at the highest levels;
— subverts democracy through electoral fraud;
— has a closed, corrupted dominant media system serving the powerful, not the greater good;
— incarcerates hundreds of political prisoners;
— uses torture as official policy; and
— wages state-sponsored terrorism and global wars.

Interesting, because I get the opposite feeling everytime I visit the US it doesn’t seem like a fascist state since nobody’s gets beat up, journalists don’t get assassinated and TV stations don’t get their license revoked for speaking against the government. Chavez shut down 1 tv station RCTV for SEDITION (2001 CIA-led coup admitted by Condeelza Con) and nationalized Exxon Mobile or re-nogiated their royalties from %70 – %30 in favor of Exxon to vice-versa %30 – %70 in favor of Venezuela.
Did Exxon-Mobile leave the country? NO they took the deal anyways because they still are making huge profits.

Chavez has nationalized more than exxon – mobile. Polar Beer and about 30 other companies I believe. Mitsubishi shut down before he could get them. All petroleum companies are state owned. Both of my brother in laws have been fired for voting against Chavez, after over 20 years experience in the Petroleum Industry.
I do respect his refusal to succumb to the IMF and the other Tyrants. But he is still a Castro Style Dictator. Years of Corruption both Foreign and Domestic have left a country with huge potential as a 3rd world country – the people have been raped as usual.
I have no eveidence of state sponsored terrorism but he is peddleing his influence over the rest of Latin Amerca while his country men are broke.

Venezuela has been riding high on inflated oil prices. That’s the only way it has been able to afford the social programs and the entire country crumbles otherwise. Chavez is anti business and has driven out and demonized many companies, even going so far as to seize land Mugabe style. If the people of Venezuela want Chavez as president, that’s their right. He is not perfect, not close to it…but he is a product of what was going on in Venezuela before. Power corrupts, and no doubt he is corrupt, and self serving, but he (or at least was) a populist who seemed to have the interests of the great majority there who live in poverty.
When it really does come down to it, the people of Venezuela could have done a lot worse. Chavez is not a crazed dictator, and while libertarians would point out the nationalizations as evil…it was the fault of the corporations who have been raping south America for decades. If corporations went down there and paid living wages and help bring Venezuela out of poverty, and helped created a growing middle class Chavez would have never existed. Chavez is not a eugenical psycho. I would totally prefer him over the secret owners of the fed and their depopulation.
And if the US had it’s act together, and we got this gov’t thrown out, then we could have mutually benificial relationships with countries like Venuzuala, were maybe we could help promote freedom there via open trade (but not exploitative trade). The real point of the article is, how dare the US gov’t criticize chavez, when he’s not the mass murdering eugenical psychopath.

I’m just another dummy who happened to live in Caracas for 3 years and worked around latin america for the better part of ten years, so what do I know, but I’ll tell you, the US news has us programmed to think of Chavez a certain way, period. Their country poses zero threat to the US– I’ve met with their military leaders. Even with 400,000 Ak-47’s and a couple jets they’re basically defenseless. Highly unlikely to know such truth with CIA-fronted press all across central and south america pumping up the volume. The fact is, Venezuela suffered with an 85% poverty rate (and about that for illiteracy) under 40 years of ‘democracy’. At least they know how to read now, and the Cuban doctors they brought in are at least as well-trained as ours here. I suspect they are being a branded a terror sponsor in preparation for another coup or even invasion. They already have Plan Balboa in the can if they need it. We may also go in via Columbia under the pretense of helping in the drug war. If they were smart they’d put their Bolivar on the gold standard (Venezuela produces gold) and tell the IMF to stick it.

The Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra headed by Gustavo Dudamel (consisting of young adults around 20 and probably less) sounds much more impressive than major symphonies in the USA. Venezuela has hundreds of youth orchestras.
Why do I say this? Because there is an implication or insinuation that Chavez would do away with western culture and values, when in fact the educational institutions in Venezuela/Caracas are doing more to preserve it than Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan.
We have a lot of damage to clean up before we start criticizing other countries.
