The House of Representatives has voted to defund abortion giant Planned Parenthood for the second time in a month.
Representatives voted 241 to 185 for legislation that would see the organisation defunded, while the investigation into the purported sale of aborted tissue and organs continues.
All in all, 238 Republicans and 3 Democrats voted for the bill, which states that Planned Parenthood will be defunded should it continue to carry out abortions.
The bill states:
“For the one-year period beginning on the date of the enactment of this division … no funds authorized or appropriated by Federal law may be made available for any purpose to Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc., or any affiliate or clinic of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc., unless such entities certify that Planned Parenthood Federation of America affiliates and clinics will not perform, and will not provide any funds to any other entity that performs, an abortion during such period.”
The legislation also outlines that funds will be diverted to other women’s health clinics that do not carry out abortions.
“All funds that are no longer available to Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc., and its affiliates and clinics pursuant to this division will continue to be made available to other eligible entities to provide women’s health care services.”
A recent Congressional report found that de-funding Planned Parenthood would save up to $235 million – as well as thousands of unborn babies.
Earlier in September, the House voted 241-187 on a different defunding bill, which Senate Democrats went on to filibuster and block. It is highly likely that they will do the same with this latest resolution.
The latest Government Accountability Office report found that Planned Parenthood received a total of $1.5 billion from federal programs over the past three years.
Congressman Steve Scalise, an ardent supporter of the defunding bill noted that “House passage of this measure sends a clear message to the American people: the right to life is our most precious gift from God, and it is offensive and unacceptable that a single cent of taxpayer dollars would be sent to an organization that systematically aborts infants and sells their body parts.”
“House Republicans will continue to promote a culture that respects life at every stage,” Scalise told reporters.
Meanwhile, Planned Parenthood head Cecile Richards has complained that questions put to her by a Congressional panel this week were “sexist”.
“I do think some of the comments were pretty sexist,” Richards told MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow. “But actually I think it was because they didn’t have anything else to talk about.”
The questions related to how much money Richards makes as head of Planned Parenthood, which is over $500,000 a year.
“Obviously, I’m being generous calling it a hearing” Richards added, dubbing the push to defund her organisation a “terrible political move.”
Richards declared that Americans with a pro-life outlook are hell bent on preventing women’s health care.
“They are obsessed with ending access to reproductive healthcare for women in America,” she said. “Frankly, I was a bit dismayed about how little many members of the committee even knew about women’s health at all.”
She claimed that “Folks love Planned Parenthood, not because of our brand, not because of anything they see on TV… It’s because they come to us for health care.”
