Buried under the mountain of Obamacare’s rules and regulations is a $54 million slush fund that’s earmarked for hiring “navigators” to help guide average citizens through the new health care maze. One might assume that these “navigators” would be highly-trained individuals who understand both our healthcare needs and the Obamacare requirements. But you know what happens when you assume.
Under the new Affordable Care Act, “navigators” will help consumers understand all the different coverage options being offered on the state exchanges. Some navigators must be affiliated with non-profit groups, but none of them have to be affiliated in any way with an insurance agent or broker or Obamacare.
Supporters of the program say it will benefit consumers in underserved areas who may need expert help choosing a health plan. And according to The Hill, navigators will have to “demonstrate expertise in health insurance and take a 20-30 hour online course on ObamaCare.”
In short, any person, corporation or political interest group who wants to become a navigator and grab a piece of the navigator slush fund need merely apply, take a two or three day course, and start spending taxpayer’s money, and that’s what has some Republican Senators up in arms.
On Thursday, nine Republican Senators sent a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, asking for more information about the navigator program. Specifically, what are the minimum requirements and what type of training will the receive?
The letter, signed by Finance Committee ranking member Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and Sens. Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.), Tom Coburn (R-Okla.), John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), Pat Roberts (R-Kan.), Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.), Richard Burr (R-N.C.), John Thune (R-S.D.) and John Cornyn (R-Texas) said:
“The standards proposed by your Department could result in a convicted felon receiving federal dollars and gaining access to confidential taxpayer information. The same standards allow any individual who has registered with the exchange and completed two days of training to facilitate enrollment, as if the decision to purchase health insurance is similar to the decision of registering to vote,” wrote the Senators. “The unreasonably low standard for becoming a navigator not only undermines the state’s ability to ensure consumers are protected but raises questions about the appropriate use of federal resources and the protection of highly sensitive consumer information.”
According to Politico, “Planned Parenthood is among the long list of liberal organizations that are expected to receive taxpayer-funded navigator grants. The navigator grants would further enable Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion provider in America, to continue its misuse of taxpayer dollars to [supplement] their big abortion business,” said Rep. Diane Black (R-Tenn.), who says she wants to eliminate the navigator program — for which $54 million in funds will be made available — even without a Planned Parenthood link because it’s “ripe for fraud and abuse” and violations of privacy.”
But consider the fact that states are already using their healthcare exchanges to push voter registration. According to an article at People’s World, California will be incorporating voter registration in their exchange.
“California’s Secretary of State Debra Bowen is designating the state’s new Health Benefit Exchange, Covered California, as a voter registration agency under the National Voter Registration Act. That means Covered California will be incorporating voter registration into every transaction – online, in-person and by phone – it has with consumers.”
As long as they’re “helping people” with their insurance options, navigators will have unlimited avenues for promoting their liberal agendas – Door-to-door, over the phone, via email and online advertising. Access your local healthcare exchange and you’re likely to see propaganda promoting everything from political candidates to a complete ban on guns, and who knows who’s going to be knocking on your door or running up your cellphone bill.
And let’s not even talk about the fact that all of these navigators will also have unlimited access to all your personal information, including financial and medical records.
