An illegal immigrant from Senegal was arrested in Florence, Italy for allegedly murdering American artist and socialite Ashley Olsen (no relation to the Olsen twins). Police found the illegal immigrant’s DNA on a condom and a cigarette in Olsen’s apartment.
Olsen, 35, had been living in Florence with her beagle Scout since 2012. The Florida native decided to move to the city because it is where her father teaches art. Olsen was found dead by her boyfriend Saturday, Jan. 9.
Olsen was found nude in her apartment with marks on her neck. A police autopsy initially concluded that Olsen’s death was the result of a sex game gone wrong but police are now walking away from that theory, according to CNN.
The head prosecutor for the city of Florence told reporters Thursday authorities determined Diaw Cheik Tidianee, who was arrested Wednesday evening, had consensual sex with Olsen “under the influence of alcohol, and possibly drugs” according to Reuters. Florence head prosecutor Giuseppe Creazzo said that besides being strangled, Olsen had two fractures to her skull, according to Reuters.
Police could not find Olsen’s phone in her apartment when they began their investigation and it is what led them to conclude she knew her murderer. When Tidianee was arrested, authorities found he had been using Olsen’s phone but with his own SIM card.
Authorities concluded Olsen died in the early morning. Tidianee was interrogated and is currently in a prison in Florence and has been charged with homicide, according to NBC.
Comparisons between this case and the trials of American Amanda Knox were frequent in the wake of Olsen’s Murder. Knox was tried multiple times before being ultimately cleared in the murder of British student Meredith Kercher.
