All you people talking about how its some crazy new thing that there is good “rap” and that he is the only one, you don’t know ANYTHING about REAL HIP-HOP. (Hip-hop is NOT RAP, rap refers to the spoken word rhyming in general, hip-hop is an underground style of music that is almost NEVER played in the mainstream anymore). You can tell the difference because real hip-hop uses actual drum kit samples (instead of synth 808 claps and stuff) and raw samples and music and actually has good thought-provoking lyrics by talented individuals. That is not the case with mainstream rap, which we should be ashamed of as the human race for bringing into existence. The two genres are damn near polar opposites. Like comparing disco and rock and roll.. They may have similar origins, but they are two opposite ends of the Good-Bad spectrum.

I’ve been a musician for 35 years and have taught guitar part-time for 15 years. I love everything from Benny Goodman to Pink Floyd to Bach to System of a Down. Sorry, rap is not music. Ask any rap “artist” what a scale is – they will probably tell you that it’s something that you weigh drugs with. If you think that pressing the play button on a $300 drum machine and speaking semi-literate English is music, well, that’s your choice. And yes, I know that not all rap is gangsta rap, but much of it is and seems to get the most playtime.
Having said all of that, this guy is obviously an intelligent person and is doing good, so all I can say is more power to him. I wonder though how many people who listen to him will actually understand his message, when the majority of rap out there is such mindless garbage.
I used to work with disadvantaged inner-city youth, many of whom were black. Many of them would just mindlessly repeat raps, just utter gibberish about guns and drugs and bling and big booties. I’d try to explain to them that blacks have a rich history of real music, from blues to jazz to funk to various ethnic genres, not to mention heavily influencing the birth of rock. None of them were interested. Many could barely read or write. Other than CIA supplied cocaine, rap has done more to harm the black community than anything else. But I do hope that this guy can spread his message.
I tried writing a rap tune once and it came out sounding like a Frank Zappa tune. I tried to write as simplistically as I could and my musician buddies all told me that it was too complex to be rap. I could only dumb-down so much.

Try Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Black Thought (performs with the Live Rap Band “The Roots”), etc…your views on rap are limited and yes it IS music. Many of these rappers are quite intelligent but purposely dumb their lyrics down to gain mainstream exposure. If the public wasn’t so dumbed down they wouldn’t do “mindless rap”. As one rapper said, “Artistic integrity will not pay your mortgage.” – 50 Cent. Listen to mid 80’s rap or early 90’s rap (mostly from NYC)….totally different from todays rap.

I’m open-minded and I’ll check those people out. I’m not expecting much though, to be honest. I’m not god’s gift to the guitar world by any means, but frankly, after being able to figure out Yes tunes and Mahavishnu Orchestra tunes as a teenager, I have pretty stringent standards as to what constitutes music, as opposed to mass-produced b.s.
There is a huge difference between 3 or 4 or 5 guys sitting in a room together and creating something heartfelt and original from scratch, as opposed to having some music producer and drum machine/synth programmer concoct some irritatingly monotonous beat (always in 4/4 time with the same annoying meter) and have some guy talk shit over it. Sadly, most people cannot tell the difference between original composition and mass-produced, cookie cutter tripe. Have you ever heard a rap tune that had a time signature of 5/4 or 7/4 (5 beats to the measure or 7 beats to the measure)? I haven’t. What comprises a real composition? Well, try listening to “Gates of Delirium” by Yes (all 22 minutes). That is f@#@ng composition.

I’ve heard hip-hop with cut time (3/4), if that counts for anything.. I don’t think any other timing would be conducive to the spoken word aspect though.. I think you are completely missing the point of hip hop, which is understandable for a musician (I am one as well), as we often are more impressed with technical ability rather than catchiness or a nice tone than those who dont play any instrument or have any musical knowledge. But I definately agree with you about mainstream rap, but you have to understand that mainstream rap is going against even some of the most important “gangsta” values (if you can call them that), and that mainstream is 100% created by corporate entities (mostly white, globalist NWO controlled) who are trying to keep the urban populations stupid and if they do get rich, they would much rather you “make it rain” for some dirty stripper snatch than invest in something which could help the black/poor communities. And real gangster hip-hop (the ones who actually had to live on the streets and fight in gangs to stay alive and eat) usually espouses entirely different ideas than fake whores like Rick Ross. The main difference is that real gangster type people will have a kind of code of honor and “manliness”, especially about materialism and the use of wealth to impress women. Someone who was a real gangster would not go around making it rain to impress women. That’s called “trickin’” in pimp language and is the equivalent of paying for a whore. Like TI in that one song saying “Baby you can have whatever u like”.. That is weak sh*t that would never be tolerated by people who had to be strong to fight for survival in poverty. My point is underground hip-hop is good, not by technical or musical standards, but for its own merits, which are lyrically based, not instrumentally.

Point taken. I freely admit I’m a musical snob, but that’s because music is my passion and I understand it (to some degree). Techinical prowess isn’t always my mark though. For example, David Gilmour is not the most technically proficient guitarist, but he’s still one of the greats. I can listen to and enjoy a Ramones tune but it ain’t quite the same as listening to “Pictures at an Exhibition” by Emerson, Lake and Palmer, “Playing the Fool” by Gentle Giant or “Hemispheres” by Rush. That stuff takes you on a journey.
As for mainstream rap, I’ve always believed that it was an NWO plan to hurt the black community. A bass player that I know believes that disco was also a government invention to dumb down the masses. I don’t buy the Tavistock/Beatles thing though. Theo Adorno supposedly wrote the Beatle’s music for Tavistock, but Adorno was into 12 tone row meanderings, which has nothing to do with Beatle’s music, which is primarily diatonic (albeit with some interesting modulations and twists). Maybe I’m wrong but that’s how I see it.

Hey Porky. Yeah, I would think that, being a drummer, you wouldn’t take kindly to rap. To be honest, I do use internal synth drums in Cubase for composition, and since I’m bandless at the moment, it’s my only avenue. However, no matter how many hours I might take programming a drum part, it will never, ever replace a real drummer. I hesitate to do anything with the songs I’ve written on Cubase because they are meant to be played with a real, live drummer. Anything less would be b.s.

I watched a little bit of the VH1 Hip Hop awards – as much as my stomach could handle. There was one number in which a rapper would do a little solo and then another one would come prancing out and do his bit – there were a half dozen of them give or take. The way these guys would come strutting onto the stage as if they were second coming or something was just too much to take.
It was the same old shit – “BZ boobee is in da house, say ohhhhhhh!!!!!” No Shakespeare here to put it mildly. And these morons are prancing around as if they’re actually something. They are not even musicians and they can barely speak the English language. Of course, the audience is going wild. I’m thnking, am I in the freaking twilight zone or what!!!! Have we really regressed that much? What would John Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie or Charlie Parker have thought if they were still with us?
To be fair, there’s almost as much garbage in other genres today, including country, R & B and alternative rock. At least most of these bozos can actually sing a bit and play their instruments, even though the majority of music on the airwaves these days is corporate cookie-cutter crap. You can, in fact, find new music that’s at least a little fresh and innovative, mostly in metal and even some prog rock, but you have to search for it – you’ll never hear it on mainstream radio.
