MIAMI (AP) – Melissa Green’s mother spoke Spanish, but she never learned – her father forbid it. Today, that’s a frequent problem in this city where the English-speaking population is outnumbered.

The 49-year-old flower shop owner and Miami native said her inability to speak “espanol” makes it difficult to conduct business, seek help at stores and even ask directions. She finds it “frustrating.”
“It makes it hard for some people to find a job because they don’t speak Spanish, and I don’t think that it is right,” said Green, who sometimes calls a Spanish-speaking friend to translate for customers who don’t speak English.
“Sometimes I think they should learn it,” she said.
In many areas of Miami, Spanish has become the predominant language, replacing English in everyday life. Anyone from Latin America could feel at home on the streets, without having to pronounce a single word in English.

In the land of the Cuban, what would you expect? The Cubans who immigrate to Miami speak Spanish as their primary language, both citizen and non-citizen. Any Spanish-Speaking citizen has a right to stay. The language of which one speaks does not influence the freedom in which we enjoy. The illegal aliens need to be tested for citizenship. If they fail, they can take their boats back to their old country!

It’s brilliant that GISELA SALOMON failed to include the fact that Miami was developed by the Cubans during the 70s and 80s, and that the first wave of European colonizers in the early 16th century to occupy Chequescha, so-named by Ponce de Leon, were Spaniards. WHAT DO YOU EXPECT??

I am so disappointed with the Spanish language taking over English in the United States. It used to be a REQUIREMENT TO SPEAK ENGLISH when living in the USA or Migrating to USA. I am only 28 years old but I remember a big fuss was made in the early 90’s when California decided to implement “dual language” paperwork to cater to Spanish-only speaking people. They spent untold MILLIONS by creating two sets of papers for everything – one in Spanish and one in English and also hiring staff who speaks Spanish. It just BAFFLES me as to why people dont “become” Americans when they move here.
I grew up in Santa Maria, California and I am considered white, but I was the minority in elementary, junior high and high school. Almost everyone else was Mexican! I was 1 in 4, now at school in Santa Maria a white person is probably 1 in 6 or 1 in 10 or less depending on the area. Mexicans can literally live 20+ people to a household. Sleeping in 2 cars on the driveway, 2 or 3 dirty mobile trailers in the back holding 3 people each, plus the house is packed. You see roaches scrambling across the sidewalk into the street to the house next door. They leave baby diapers loaded with feces in Parkinglots in front of busy stores, just to get run over by other drivers and smeared across the pavement. Problems, problems. I am not racist. I dont hate them… I just get tired of that. I mean, when you move from a 3rd world country to a so-called 1st world… at least try to live like it… there are other people who aren’t from Mexico. I just wish everyone could BLEND together… rather than have Little China Town, Little Tokyo Town, little Mexico Town, Little Vietnam Town, etc. etc. That isolates yourself from the rest of the country. You just live in your tiny little world. Anyone agree? Anyone disagree? Any comments? Anyone want to add anything? Any SIMILAR experiences?

in miami they have stop signs in spanish. how much did it cost to make those signs. and why as a FL resident, who pays taxes, did my tax dollars go for a sign i cant read? i got a ticket because i cant read spanish and didnt know to stop. if there was a sign in english along with the spanish sign i would have stopped but i guess no one there speaks english and they dont need signs for american born citizens because we are to busy givin them hand outs and aid that is for citizens but somehow they get free health care. there was a bunch of people wanting to split FL in half and make 2 states out of it. south FL would become “little havana” wouldnt that be great. can you think how those old people in boca raton would react. mass heart attacks

. Throughout American history, there have been times when a language other than English was spoken by the majority of a community or region. Why is it only a major issue when it involves the Spanish language??? Could this be a form of Anglo Protestant racism??? Late 1700s and early 1800s Dutch was spoken by the majority of New Yorkers. Mid 1800s, German was spoken almost exclusively in regions of Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Mid to late 1800s, Scandinavian languages were spoken by the majority of people in Minnesota. There were pockets of Italian and German speaking majorities in various places such as New York, Texas etc etc. Anaheim California’s entire municipal government, post offices, and public schools spoke only German in the mid 1800s. Several cities in New York and New Jersey spoke predominantly Yiddish up until the 1940s. The majority of the inhabitants of the Navajo Nation in Arizona speak Navajo, not English. How about all the China Towns??? A nation that is made up of emigrants is bound to have places like Miami because emigration comes in waves and from different parts of the world and so you’ll have concentrations of languages other than English. Instead of complaining, try celebrating the colorful diversity that has made America strong and unique??? All these people have contributed to what America is. Try eliminating the influence of just one of the above mentioned ethnic groups and you’ll see that America would be much poorer.

This is TRUE… I live in MIAMI…. but the story does not tell the whole truth. Most of these Spanish people especially the young ones (Under 40) also speak ENGLISH…. so you can talk in SPANISH or ENGLISH to about 70% of the people (I FIGURE). I don’t speak fluent spanish but I don’t have a problem communicating with most people because most people speak ENGLISH still. Just there are far more people who speak ENGLISH and SPANISH then there are who ONLY speak SPANISH or ENGLISH.
WHAT does it matter anyway? MIAMI is DIFFERENT…. SO WHAT… I love MIAMI….

This article is not accurate in my opinion…. the primary language SPANISH is only primarily spoken in localized areas.
What this article is missing is the fact that everyone in MIAMI is learning BOTH SPANISH & ENGLISH… if you go to my kids school they all are speaking MIXED English and Spanish….
The only people who speak only SPANISH or ENGLISH are the older generations above 40. The rest are happy to speak English or Spanish with you. I speak to people who just got to this country 5 yrs ago and they already speak English. The problem is the old people who are too old to learn a new language or just don’t have the time or energy.
So go figure…. we are a melting POT and BILINGUAL… which is more then I can say for the rest of the USA. MIAMI is the best city in the USA as far as I am concerned.
Anyway people don’t move to MIAMI to talk to other people. They move here for the SUN the Turqoise Blue water. great fishing, great parties beaches…. etc etc etc…

The Spanish language and culture adds so much character, spice and color to Miami; how can you complain about it? Maybe you prefer the Fargo North Dakota scene which is exclusively white anglo and English speaking to Miami’s excitement and beauty. I think that the great majority of people would find Miami a lot more entertaining and interesting than “English Only” areas. Taking away the Spanish and Caribbean culture from Florida is like having a pizza with no toppings, cheese or sauce !!! Don’t forget that Florida belonged to Spain until 1821 !!!!!!!!!!! The more colors and designs you weave into a carpet, the more beautiful it will be. Celebrate the unique character of each region instead of complaining that they may be different than you !!!

I wonder what Mexicans, Colombians, or any other Hispanic country would feel like if invaded by a massive population of foreigners. So, it is not a matter of being spicy, hip, and-or politically correct. It is a matter of what’s right or wrong. I left my home country of Venezuela for many reasons. Therefore, I do not expect my new home country to mold according to my needs, but to the contrary I will mold according to my new home land.
How would anybody feel if a visitor would stay at your home as a guest, and slowly but surely start to change things around your house. I live here and everything in this article is correct. I don’t speak spanish and it is definately a crutch here. But hey, our leaders are letting this immigration problem continue. Why wouldn’t people in central and south America want to come here. It’s one of the best countries in the world… or at least it was. In their minds it still is… and beats the poverty stricken places that many of these immigrants have fleed from. As long as we keep letting them in, southern states will see an increase of more and more people speaking spanish.

You people have to look at the bigger picture. It’s not about the language. The southern states are being inundated with Mexicans with a great number of them convinced that it’s their land and groups such as La Raza, MEChA and the Aztlan reconquista mouvement openly “call for the implementation of The Plan of San Diego, a plot hatched in 1915 in Northern Mexico and throughout the Southwest that called for the genocide of all white males over 16.” The founder of La Raza, Jose Gutierrez is quoted as saying “We have got to eliminate the gringo”.

Had europeans come to america and given native’s their idea of immigration laws before they started swarming in, would europeans still be here in such encumbering amounts? NO! Montreal was the largest and most glamorous city in Canada until the political weasels chased the Anglos out. Now they have 40% unemployment in Montreal and the city is a giant slum, just like Mexico.

I was doing one of my walking tours a few years ago and I happened to be going through Miami. This Latin guy came up to me and said “Se Habla Espanol?”. I said “No”, and he got a smug look on his face and asked “You no speak Spanish?” I said “This United States. United States people speak English. If I go Cuba, Mexico, I no make people speak English!” He seemed to understand but looked as if that thought had never occurred to him. I do speak enough Spanish to get by in a pinch, but the point is most Americans who travel abroad don’t expect the country they are visiting to adopt English as their language, (unless perhaps they are the Bush family). I live near West Palm Beach, FL, about an hour north of Miami. Up until the Real Estate boom went bust last year this was a happening place with plentiful jobs and nice weather. Now there are about half as many Latinos as there were. They, like most of us when hard times come, have to follow the work. Some Latinos make big talk and like to impress women when they say “Kill the Gringo”. But I’ve probably met 3 or 4 hundred Latins the last 25 years and most are decent people trying to better themselves. In the last year I’ve even made a point to ask them about El Plan De San Diego. Most don’t know about it, and when I explain and they check on it they are horrified. I fit the group the Diegos most want to kill. I’m a Gringo 62 years old, but I haven’t met a Latin yet who hated me because I’m white. But maybe they see me as a harmless old grandpa. Its vital we expose the truth about such things. There are many good decent souls in the Latin community. Until they shoot at me or my neighbors I’d like to give them some benefit of the doubt, but if it
comes down to it my eyesight and nerves are just as good as they were 40 years ago when I was a sharpshooter, and we’ll just have to TCOB, (take care of business).

I am in Hallandale beach fl… it isnt so bad its a little north of mia about 10-15 mins.. I am myself Hispanic American… One thing I hate is when a Hispanic person comes here and after 10-15 years they dont know english……… That really ticks me.. My parents are immigrants and they learned English as soon as they got here.., There really is no excuse not to learn English… Especially after years of being here….

To the redneck “patriots” posting here: What does “American” mean to you? You’re upset that people are coming here and changing a few things?!?! Our grandparents floated over here and changed everything, and had children who changed everything after them.
So many of you try so hard to define “American” so narrowly, it’s as if you actually think we should all be so helpless that we should be scared to learn a few different languages or understand and appreciate different cultures. That’s Xenophobia, not patriotism. Every one of you is capable of learning a few new things every now and then. It’s GOOD for your psyche to admit that you don’t know everything and to be a perpetual student in this life.
I love my country, but before i was branded “American” I was born HUMAN! So what is America? We’ve been fucked over more times by powerful white men born here than by poor migrants originating outside our borders. Should I be on such a power trip as a slave here that I should be telling other slaves how to communicate with one another?
All of you in the “Speak English or Die” set have a pitiful grasp of our language, anyway. Understanding many languages helps you to understand your own native language better, and I rather enjoy my ability to communicate with people in lands more exotic than Kentucky.
Learn a few new languages. Talk to people from elsewhere. Their situations are quite the same as yours.

Now I’ve known lots of great American folks these past years.
Our countrymen are gracious, helpful, generous, slow to anger,
and for the most part quite tolerant of different cultures. I’m
guilty myself of getting irate when Lou Dobbs reports more
statistics of how Latins are taking our welfare, jobs, health
care, etc. And some of them are. But if you ever get to meet
and know Latin people; I mean get to be friendly with them,
you may find they are eager to learn English and take part in
our culture, (such as it is). You know, baseball, hot dogs,

are many millions of folks the world over now that brutes
are running things in Washington. But the qualities I listed
above are hallmarks of being American. The way we’re
gonna beat these NWO cockroaches is to show that the REAL
United States is just the opposite of the criminals who run it
at the moment. For all our faults over these past 3 centuries
what has kept America free and blessed is its’ GOODNESS.
I was talking with a Japanese friend of mine yesterday and

I also live in Mexico as Elle Van Groenen. Americans who go abroad to Mexico or other parts of Latin America usually do not care if they learn Spanish or not. They demand that their builders, clerks in the store, auto mechanics etc. speak English and if they don’t they begin complaining. Americans love the beauty of the Mexican architecture, natural resources and the lovely lifestyle that they enjoy in Mexico, but nine out of ten refuse to socialize with the natives of the country and continue to segregate themselves as always. There are a few who are open minded and mingle with the natives, but unfortunately they are the minority and I am thankful for that few. It would be an even more dreadful world if it were’t for those few who love the differences and are fascinated with other people’s cultures.
Reality man should realize that the biggest threat against the white males, including brown Asian, and black included is the war. La Raza is not supported by not even 1/2 of 1 percent of the Latino population.
It appears that this website is trying to provoke Americans against their Latino neighbors at this time in history. If racial riots breakout, may this website assume some responsibiity in assisting in the chaos. I visited San Antonio once I took pride that the people of my background who are a mixture of the Spanish European and Indian natives of the American Continent had done such a beautiful job designing and creating some of the most beautiful architecture in the USA and of the world. We are such fools to follow the provateurs who want to divide the people of America when any family is divided it shall fall.
I remember reading in a well-known magazine how Mexican soap operas are recognized all over Asia and different parts of the world for their passionate and colorful stories. Why don’t we recognize our Mexican or Cuban neighbors and acknowledge their talents instead of pelting them with criticism. It is no wonder that a gang subculture developed in the USA probably in order find some type of comradship or defense system.
Let us recognize the rich architecture, colorful art work, food, and music that Mexico has contributed to what is now the USA. Let’s face it, the Spaniards arrived in what is the now considered the USA over 100 years before the Mayflower did. Switzerland has four or more legal languages in that country so what is so despicable about being a multilingual country.
It has been proven that we use a greater part of our brain when we are fluent in more than one language. May we increase in knowledge and tolerance of each other and stamp out the ugly head of hatred when it wants to pop up. ¡Viva las diferencias!

Way too many stupid ignorant fools on this site. Some dumb ass stated that in Miami we have stop signs in Spanish . That has to be one of the most absurd lies I’ve read so far. Hey, jackass, I live in Miami, show me the stop signs in Spanish!!! And what’s with all this talk about Cuban this and Cuban that? This just happens to be a hard working Immigrant community, small business owners most of them. And for the rest of you uninformed ignorant wretches, Cubans are not the majority of Hispanics in Miami or even in the state of Florida. This just happens to be the immigrant community who built this City from nothing but a swamp. Let’s not forget that in 2000 it was the Cuban-American community who stood up to Clinton and Janet Reno. When they had the gall to send Federal agents (armed with automatic weapons) into the house of a four year old boy in order to forcefully take him from his family. Where as in 1993 that very same vial demon ridden whore, Reno, was responsible for the murder of the 80 + Citizens in Waco TX., and not one single American Citizen took to the streets in outrage for the blatant assassinations of so many, including several Children. I’m proud to live among a community that had the courage to expose Reno, and Clinton for the scum that they are. A community that’s Pro-Gun, Conservative, Christian, Pro-Civil Rights, and Pro-American. Its easy to demonized or attack what you know nothing about!!! I speak fluent English, and Spanish. Bottom line, I could had not attended a University, join the Army, or work in the field that I do if I had no English skills. For those who choose not to learn English or simply can’t , I say that’s their loss, no skin off my back. And if I did not speak Spanish I would still manage to get along and live my life without fretting about who speaks what language. Funny thing, Alex talks about unity against the coming Tyranny. But if in fact he is referring to Mexicans as BROWNS he’s only contradicting his own message, and will only end up loosing a lot of his supporters. I happen to like Alex, and I’m grateful for his show and information, I respect the guy, for the time been. But he happens to be reporting on this story about three decades too late, Spanish has been the dominant language here since before I was born. Which could lead someone to make the case that perhaps he’s jacking up the division, and using the issue of Illegal Immigration (which I happen against) as a ploy for his own gain. So, Alex and the rest of you, we do have a serious issue with illegal immigration, Miami it’s the least of our problems. You will find way more Illegal Aliens in California, Texas, Dc, etc. You talk about unity against the N W O, and the Elite who intent to rule us ALL, whom I and most other American Citizens will not kneel to. How are we going to be victorious over a foe who has already divided and conquered us because we continue to play right into their hands with all this racism crap?

Well, english is not american, it came from england and spanish came from spain. the native language of america is what the native americans speak. The settlers, or “illegal’s” who came from europe and stole this land from the native americans forced english and spanish on everyone. this whole country was built on immigration. if you add all the Americans (north, central, south) the majority language is SPANISH.

Suri, I applaud your comments. I’m from Illinois and my dad told me at a very young age to learn to type and to learn to speak Spanish. I learned to type, but not the spanish part. Now I live in L.A. and it would certainly come in handy. Ultimately, we should be more like Europe and encourage children to learn Spanish just because it is practical. You’ve made the same case for immigrants who come here to learn English.
As far as the moral arguement as to whether or not the US should have moved west or not, it is a difficult call however, I don’t think anyone should make the case now, after this country has been built up and brought so much prosperity to it’s inhabitants, that white europeans stole the land and it should be given back. Historically speaking, the border of Mexico and the US was not clearly defined in the 1800’s. The US offered to buy CA, AZ etc. in 1845. Many Texans agreed to live under the rule of Mexico until they became dissatisfied as to how they ran their country and revolted in 1835. People need to read what happened and why. No one was particularly right, but the ideals of the US prevailed.
We need to all look at what a gradual reclaiming of the US by all illegal immigrants, wherever they are from, is bringing and how it is changing the fundamental values that have made this country great. I don’t want to live in Mexico or Canada, I want to live in the United States. Everyone in this country, all races, need to understand the benefits and opportunities we enjoy by living here and the potential we have to make our lives better. At least that what I believe the US represents….for how much longer, I can’t say.
