I'm from Illinois and my dad told me at a very young age to learn to type and to learn to speak Spanish. I learned to type, but not the spanish part. Now I live in L.A. and it would certainly come in handy. Ultimately, we should be more like Europe and encourage children to learn Spanish just because it is practical. You've made the same case for immigrants who come here to learn English. Americans who go abroad to Mexico or other parts of Latin America usually do not care if they learn Spanish or not. They demand that their builders, clerks in the store, auto mechanics etc. speak English and if they don't they begin complaining. Americans love the beauty of the Mexican architecture, natural resources and the lovely lifestyle that they enjoy in Mexico, but nine out of ten refuse to socialize with the natives of the country and continue to segregate themselves as always. There are a few who are open minded and mingle with the natives, but unfortunately they are the minority and I am thankful for that few. It would be an even more dreadful world if it were't for those few who love the differences and are fascinated with other people's cultures.
