    December 17, 2008

This is a letter forwarded to us from D&S collective member Amee Chew (sent to her from a friend of hers), with more details about the situation in Greece–lots of good inside info and links.

    Friends,

I don’t know if others have been following the daily news of what is unfolding in Greece. The press here has mostly reported events as another explosion of "riots" in response to a police killing, without context.

In fact, what is taking place in Greece is much larger than that. In its immediate context, the uprising of the last 10 days comes on the heels of a rising oppositional movement: recently, the Greeks managed to achieve a general strike with support from 80-90% of the working population against privatization of national industries and other neoliberal policies, and for doubling the minimum wage. A broad hunger strike among Greek prisoners, with mass solidarity from Greek society, has also compelled the government to agree to the release of about half the prison population (and the movement declared that this would not be enough).

The "spontaneous" anger of young people against police violence has beneath and alongside it long-standing movement structures that are allowing it not simply to "discharge" and dissipate, but to grow, strengthen itself and expand into new political areas. It is taking place in a population that is highly politicized and has a history of resistance to draw from.

But it’s extraordinary to see the mass mobilization of very young people–high-school students between the ages of 11 and 17, taking to the streets, taking over their schools, developing a politics that addresses their lives directly. It’s not just resistance to police repression now, but a wider discussion is taking place about education social organization–with students holding mass assemblies in their occupied schools, trying to decide what the meaning would be of an education that is part of the life they want for themselves, and not the life that is being prepared for them by the existing society.

(The flyer at the this link, from the website of the Coordination of Occupied Schools Alexandros Grigoropulos, says it well. The slogans translate as follows: across the top "The time has come for us to take the future into our hands." On the left, is the image of a student sleeping over books with the caption "School, home, tutoring". On the right are students filling the streets, marching behind a banner that says "These days belong to Alexi: cops, pigs, murderers!" and above it, the caption reads, "Struggle, rupture, revolution." )

At this point, hundreds of schools, colleges and universities have been occupied and are being transformed into centers of organizing. They are running their own radio stations, some of which are private stations now under occupation. They are occupying public buildings; attacking police stations and government ministries.

Yesterday, students occupied the central state-run television station during its news broadcast of the Prime Minister’s speech and stood with a banner saying, "Stop watching and go out into the streets!" Two smaller placards read, "Freedom for all those who have been arrested," and "Immediate release for all the arrested." (Video here.)

In a separate action, another group attacked the central Athens headquarters of the MAT, burning vehicles and a portion of the building. The MAT (Monades Apokatastasis Taxis "Units For Restoring Order") are the "riot police"–a specifically political branch of the police force developed to suppress "civil unrest." They were developed by police who received training in the US. (Greece has been a central recipient of US police training and technology for repression.) The dissolution of the MAT is one of the central demands that has come out of the assemblies of occupied schools and universities. (This also has a particular topical appropriateness: the MAT were first introduced by Konstantinos Karamanlis, father of the current Prime Minister and leader of the same right wing party Nea Dimokratia, in the years following the fall of the Greek junta. The leader of the junta would later write in his memoir that if the MAT had existed at that time, the junta might not have fallen.)

A video from this past weekend shows a battle with MAT police in the Exarchia neighborhood–the area in which the police murder took place that sparked the current uprising, and a center of left organizing–in which youths defending their neighborhood are using laser beams to blind the police and also to pinpoint them as targets so that they can maximize the effect of their crude firepower (molotov cocktails and stones) by focusing a barrage on one target at a time. (Video.)

At the center of the battle in Athens is the historic Polytechnion–the university famous for the events of November 17, 1973, when the junta attacked protesting students with tanks. As a result of that history, the police are constitutionally unable to enter the university, making it a protected enclave for political organizing and a tactical base of operations. Every evening now, after the protests and street battles, students and other active members of the movement gather for a general assembly. The Coordination of the General Assemblies and Occupations in Athens has given the movement both a political face and a structure of continuity for building, planning and deepening its political consciousness. (Website and
    blog.)

The uprising in Greece has a particular relevance at this moment in history. If you read the military manuals and strategy papers of the US architects of empire, Greece is a centerpiece of "counterinsurgency" doctrine. In the immediate postwar period, the US and England fought an extended counterinsurgency war to suppress the left (communist and anarchist), which had become the most powerful political force in the country through the years of resistance to the German occupation. The strategy was to brutally repress the armed resistance (80,000 British troops and the arming of domestic fascists to kill, imprison, and torture left guerillas), while at the same time promoting elections and including a legitimate "socialist" opposition, which supported surrendering arms and using the parliamentary system.

This is the "handbook" which the US uses in its imperial wars of conquest and occupation. It’s called "promoting Democracy." Appropriate then, this declaration of the Greek uprising: "Their Democracy murders…" (here).

[Since I haven't seen it yet appear in English, I'm pasting below the statement put out by the students who occupied the national TV yesterday. Translating as best I can:]

Our action is the result of an accumulated pressure which is robbing us of our lives, and not only an emotional explosion based on the murder of Alexis Grigoropulos by the police. We are one more collective, a piece of the revolt which is taking place.

Against pacification by the mass media, we are carrying out an intervention-interjection in the flow of the program of ERT [state television]. It’s our view that the mass media systematically cultivates fear. Rather than informing, they misinform. They are presenting a multifaceted revolt as a blind release.

They are explaining the social explosion in penal rather than political terms. They are selectively concealing the actual facts. They are representing a revolt as another spectacle which we should simply follow until the next soap opera begins. The mass media is daily turned into a means of suppressing free and public thought.

Let’s organize ourselves. No authority can offer solutions to our problems. We need to meet with other human beings. To turn our public places—the streets, the squares, the parks, the schools—into places of unmediated expression. To find ourselves face to face so that we can transform together our thought and actions.
Let’s not be afraid. Let’s turn off our televisions, go out of our houses, continue to lay claim to our life, to take it into our hands.

We condemn the police violence—immediate release of the arrested demonstrators. For human emancipation and freedom.

These are not protests for individual freedom and the sovereignty of the individual with God given rights. These are masses of youth who are thoroughly brainwashed with Marxism and Communism. They are demanding that “The State” solve all their problems. They do not believe in a free market system and demand that the state guarantee their jobs and double the minimum wage. There is not one speck of substance in these protests that come anywhere near the principles of the American Revolution. Greek, Italian and French societies are completely Marxist in nature. They don’t believe in the individual with responsibilities, hard work, sacrifice and the pursuit of happiness and success through their own effort. They believe that the State has to guarantee their whole life. Call it whatever you want, but it is communism pure and simple. They haven’t learned from the failures of history, nor have they any clue about human nature.

If these gangs of communists got their way; it would be the USSR and Stalin all over again. American Patriots assume that where there is protest against a government, it is based on the desire for freedom. Not true. Communists are known for organising these kinds of mass protest.

There is only one freedom these idiots want, and that is freedom from all effort, hardship, hard work, dignity, honour and individual sovereignty. They’re a bunch of babies waiting for Mummy State to provide and guarantee everything for them.

This is the power of youth. We should take this as a calling card, nothing is impossible we are the real power, they(NWO) have power because we chose to achknowledge it. If you didnt know by now they’v massively misused our trust and patients. Its time to take out the cobwebs….and get our life back.

    11. BlueBaron Says:

I don’t quite see what you see poster (9), I don’t see them for anything other than wanting freedom from the corporate controlled media and leaching private corporations and freedom from the controlling Elites. Not wanting to be brainwashed by the schools and wanting to be free to explore who there are as individuals.

Whatever these people want its what there want, and I say let them have it, the fact its not what the controlling Elites want is too bad. Maybe they will hang the Elites, I won’t lose any sleep over that and in will be nothing more than justice.

Wow!! The Greek are at the forefront of the fight against The New World Order!!!

You guys kick ass!!! The NEW WORLD ORDER is going DOWN!! This should inspire all young Americans to get organized and carry the spirit of the Sons of Liberty and their Founding Fathers and topple the corrupt system that has taken hold in the USA.

Carry the torch of the Founders : the original fighters against the New World Order (or the British Empire as it was known then)!!!!

BRING DOWN THE “NEW” (OLD) WORLD ORDER!!!!

    13. Mike Says:

inspiring, best news i’ve read in awhile

    14. Belle de la Liberty Says:

Number 12, The protesters agenda is plainly communist – they even call themselves communists. Understand that communism is a tool of the elite used to control and enslave the population. A collectivist state is a slave state – in collectivism, the individual belongs to the state, and the state controls all aspects of life. A return to Stalinist style collectivism in Europe would play right into the desires of the elites, the populace believes they have won some victory, while losing what little freedoms they do still have, and greatly strengthening the control of the ruling class. Communism is the opposite of the individualism the defines American ideals of liberty and freedom.

    15. charles Says:

America, take notes from what is happening in Greece. I have read so many blogs supporting what is happening in Greece, yet I see little to no action. This Saturday, Dec. 20th, let’s take to the streets with peaceful demonstrations showing our solidarity with Greece; let the world know our opposition to the NWO. As Martin Luther King said, “Now is the time!” We will never have a better oportunity in our lifetime than right now. The economy is in a state of depression, unemployment the highest in decades, corruption in illinois, 50 billion dollar Madoff fraud with SEC compliance, virtually no president running the country until inauguration, $750 billion bailout theft, the FED using the most drastic currency manipulation methods in decades, and our constitution under attack.

Now is the time. We may never have this opportunity again. The giant is down, and he is hurting; but if we do not finish him off he will rise again. Find the Greek Embassy closest to you, go to your town square, or wherever you can go this Saturday. We must take control of our own lives, or endure the consequences for the rest of our lives! The power is with the youth. We are the future; the world belongs to us. Stand up for what God has given us. Our Creator gave it to us, but entrusted us to protect his gift. Man has free will. If we want to be ruled by a few elite families on this Earth, our creator has given us that choice.

Stand up America! Take back what has been stolen from you! If you need guidance, read the constitution! Read it and you will see how far off course we have strayed. Very few Americans will oppose a demonstration demanding the government to simply follow our Constitution.

Now is the time! We will prevail if we simply try. Is your life worth fighting for? Can you look you children in their eyes ten years from now and tell them you missed the greatest opportunity in our lives to give them a better life? What excuse could you possibly give them? Now is the time, this Saturday it could start. It can start NOW, WE have the POWER!!

“We may consider each generation as a distinct nation, with a right, by the will of its majority, to bind themselves, but none to bind the succeeding generation, more than the inhabitants of another country.”
      – Thomas Jefferson

    17. Not on MY Watch Says:

They only say Communism meaning in it’s truest form. What happened in the Soviet Union wasn’t true Communism.True communism is something Americans live every day by thier own choosing. When you Hold Sunday BBQ’s or other COMMUNITY events. And yes there is a HUGE differance.True Communism is inspired by “love thy nieghbor” and a lack of selfish ego. It’s the aspect of being Humble and achieving things together. What you missed was the TRUTH of the Matter. The RIOT SHIELDS EVEN SAY “POLICE” in ENGLISH. And yes the Media does manipulate the masses.95% of the time they are doing it only to turn a profit.A HUGE one selling you Pills that will be named is next year’s Class Action Lawsuits.Like another poster said “What’s this .05% is not lethal crap? Is it too much to ask for NO poison 0% in my food and drinks?!”.You get that many upset people and some will respond to Gov. Violence with thier own backlash of rage, but it’s really a SMALL ammount. About just .05% lol. The rest are figuring out what kind of country the want to live in.The truth of what they were saying is that when The U.N. says “Democracy and the U.S. and Britts enforce it……..it’s really TYRANY and DICTATORSHIP.Few remember exactly what “Robin Hood” was really about. It had a Sheriff and a bastard of a Leader taxing people to death too. Remember how that ended……….

‘Peacful’ demonstration showing Greek support? LOL er, yeah… ok…

Instead of standing in the street whigning, why not do something.

    19. BlueBaron Says:

    20. Wideawake Says:

All I can say is “300″ The Spartans. Show us the way!

    21. P. Says:

Here in Spain where I live there has been vitually no coverage of the Greek riots other than in response to the police killing. Most rioting in Europe is provocateured and organized by elements of the government. At least once a year all students in all European capitals are asked to take to the streets to protest lack of funding for the schools. I was shocked to learn that these so called protest rallies were organized by the schools and teachers themselves. On the evening news they used these protests as proof that “democracy” does exist and the old folks go right back to sleep.

    22. Stuart Jones Says:

MAY GOD CAUSE THIS SORT OF ACTION TO HAPPEN ALL OVER THE EU!!! Thailand, Ireland, Iceland, Greece, WHO ELSE WILL JOIN THESE NATIONS OF THE WORLD???

    23. KleptoPsychotic Says:

Same here P. The US coverage has been light, peppered with, “We’ll keep you informed as more develops.” HA!

The extent to which your (plural, all readers) media doesn’t cover the viewpoint expressed in this email is the extent to which it is controlled by people who have a vested interest in keeping you pacified, ignorant and dependent. Instead, be IN-dependent!

    24. Camo Says:

The demonstrations must be lawful even though those you are protesting against will not be. You must stand your ground and let them make the first mistake. Then you can rise up together and united. The first thing people do when they see violence on the news is side with the good old media who are ever so innocent and friendly… That is why they have so many provocateers because violence would instantly discredit a movement.

    25. Jive Mothafacko Says:

‘300?’ Ummm…hey bro, they lost. Nothing personal, but if you want to reference Greek mythology, stick to Homer. Frank Miller is neat and all, buuuuut…

    26. RestoreTheRepublic Says:

ANY activism is better than the BRAINWASHED CATATONIA that prevails here in the US. Some of the organizational and tactical skills shown in Greece are impressive. Their water must not be fluoridated. One small criticism: a little too much collectivist rhetoric … but again, mejor que nada.

    27. JonTheSavage Says:

Protesting is fine, but the only thing you will accomplish with peaceful protesting is bringing more people to your cause. Other than that one purpose, it is futile. If you have 2 million people marching, then peace won’t accomplish you anything but looking like a hippie. WHEN the American people are ready, then our government will be taken back.

Let us, for now, continue to wake people up.

    28. david welch Says:

thanks to machines, human labor is less required. and with an explosive population, it is easy why unemployment will grow. the last 20 years has set the stage for the big “die off”. the part that blows my mind is the Mayan Calander prediction.

    29. Alan Gresley Says:

I do see that the protest in Iceland and now Greece is the beginning of the end of the NWO. These are popular uprising reminiscent of the fall of the Eastern Bloc nations in 1989. I don’t believe that this is part of the NWO order plan but rather like the Russian Georgian conflict in August which showed the NWO implementation sliding of the tracks. You can plan for an Endgame but just like Chess anything can happen that spoils the possible victory.

NWO scum, the revolution is building. When people began showing signs with revolution written on then, I guess you though, f**k. Now we are seeing popular uprisings that will spread around the Earth. Actually the recent success of Obama is having an unusual side effect of real change. Those gun crazy Americans have been researching you since the 1990s and all they are waiting for now is martial law before the second American civil war begins.

I wish the success of the true patriots in America and death to the NWO.

    31. tristar Says:

Greek time now is 16:57 pm, as of the last 2hrs huge riots again have been going as i am typing this. Also it is not only students that are protesting but whole family’s. I guess all this was not expected by the NWO from such a small nation and the suport from other E.U. member states.

    32. zephyr Says:

My wife’s mother’s side of the family is Greek and very proud of it. I’ve always broken their balls about the Greeks but right now I could not be more proud of them. I cannot wait for the day it starts here. I’m nearly 44 but I would stand right by these kids and wherever they aimed their lasers at cops would make a nice target for my shotgun slug!!! These NOW pansies have got to be crapping themselves now! They know if the US ever woke up then the jig really is up. I would personally chase these fuckers til the end of the earth to make sure they breath their last!!!!!

Still not clear to me whether all this is a good thing. They want industries to remain nationalized? A bigger minimum wage? . . . . Are they for or against the NWO? Hard to tell from this report if they want more of, or less of, a command and control economy.

    36. Josh B. Says:

w00t w00t gr33ks… I think I’m gonna go buy a Gyro today in honor of these patriots.

    37. chickie Says:

GOOD FOR EVERYONE I GREECE!!!!! too bad us in the USA don’t have the balls to gather together and RIOT until the Gov’t COMPLIES with US!

    38. Former Citizen Says:

#36, each country is different and the people residing in those countries want different ways of living. Neoliberal “free trade” isn’t good for everyone. On top of that, it isn’t good all the time. Most countries find it NECESSARY to nationalize industries to protect themselves from the so-called practices of free trade and neo-liberalism (more like economic imperialism).

Go Greeks! You’re all makin’ me wish I lived there instead of the States.

    39. Thomas Morton Says:

#39, I understand all that. But this is still all pretty vague. I’m not sure what their endgame is — what do they want? A Soviet or Fascist-style command economy? Eco-globalism? I’m not buying until I see who would benefit from all this. Very unclear thus far.

I know you wanted to act smart but you came out looking like a fool.
And by the way, if it wasnt for those Greeks during the persian wars, the light of democracy and freedom would have died out a long time ago…
We owe Greece our freedom as they fought many wars outnumbered and out armed for the good of freedom and intellectualism. In WW2, Greece could have allowed the Germans to pass through and not join the war…but they stood defiant! They were the only nation to fight both Italy and Germany in WW2. Tiny Greece ended up crushing the German paratroopers during the battle of Crete to an extent were Hitler refused to use the paratroopers again in the war. (operation mercury)
These are people who don’t just say “Freedom or Death” they LIVE IT!!!

    42. Trailblazer Says:

Agree with 40. Who knows what is behind these protests. Maybe it is actually a marxist/communist movement. To say everything is for or against NWO is simple ignorant. This may have nothing to do with NWO. Please someone tell me how what this has to do with the NWO. Corrupt Policemen may be the only thing behind this with out of control youth involved. Not even close to what the Original American Patriots fought for.

For those who are calling for an out of contol arm rebellion. Shame on you. THAT IS EXACTLY HOW THEY WILL COME AND TAKE YOUR GUNS AWAY WITH OBAMABOTS CHEERING THEM ON.

      BE PREPARED

FIGHT with awareness Spreading the word
We need to have the police and military on the side of the American Public and not the US Government.
Make them aware of what is happenning and how the Government is not for the people of USA.

    43. chris Says:

Great article, it’s exaclty what’s happening right now. Students occuping public buildings and inviting people to open debate but the media concentrate mostly on the spectacular clashes between police and rioters.

#43 What this has to do with the NWO? The statement put out by the students says it:

“Our action is the result of an accumulated pressure which is robbing us of our lives…
…the mass media systematically cultivates fear. Rather than informing, they misinform…
… Let’s turn off our televisions, go out of our houses, continue to lay claim to our life, to take it into our hands…For human emancipation and freedom.”

      More from THEIR DEMOCRACY MURDERS…:
“It is the escalation of the generalized attack of the state and the bosses against the whole of society, in order to impose more rigid conditions of exploitation and oppression, to consolidate control and repression. An attack that is reflected everyday on poverty, social exclusion, the blackmail to adjust in the world of social and class divisions, the ideological war launched by the dominant mechanisms of manipulation (the mass media). An attack which is raging in every social space, demanding from the oppressed their division and silence. From the schools’ cells and the universities to the dungeons of waged slavery with the hundreds of dead workers in the so-called “working accidents” and the poverty embracing large numbers of the population… From the minefields in the borders, the pogroms and the murders of immigrants and refugees to the numerous “suicides” in prisons and police stations… from the “accidental shootings” in police blockades to violent repression of local resistances, Democracy is showing its teeth!

In these conditions of fierce exploitation and oppression, and against the daily looting and pillage that the state and the bosses are launching, taking as spoils the oppressed people’s labour force, their life, their dignity and freedom, the accumulated social suffocation is accompanying today the rage erupting in the streets and the barricades for the murder of Alexandros.”

The greek people are very aware of the fact that they are being exploited and are trying to do something about it.
Do you want fucking Rochefeller and his buddies to control you for the rest of your miserable life?
At least do your children a favour and RESIST NOW! We need another revolution!

      You want to start America…
by all means do, the Illuminati and Vatican shills of the black pope(jesuits)
will be very unpleased if you start burning banks, so, start burning the banks,
then from there burn them all.
note; be very carefull of life, do not take anyones life, no need to, building are not liveing people.
start by burning banks, serves stations(fuel stations or pumps), burn rich folks hang outs, burn them,

      or

      dont even bother.

      HW Spartan.

PS; but, in Greece we have few shapeshifters, they are in hideing.

in America, most if not all authority are Serpents, the rest brainwashed humans

SO IL TELL YOU WHERE TO START….AREA51…thats where you should go, force them to shoot you, force the serpents out of the hole.
in Greece we dont have UFO agendas, but in your case…go and demand to see if not burn…AREA51..this is really where to start.

      AREA51.

god bless, and god speed in your actions.
