Judge Threatens Amish Couple

EBENSBURG — Cambria County Judge Norman Krumenacker today ordered two Amish couples to leave their homes by 10 a.m. Monday or face eviction by the sheriff because they’ve not complied with sewage and building code regulations.

Krumenacker said that sheriff deputies will padlock the houses and any barns or outbuildings on the properties, and the padlocks will remain in place until the properties are brought into compliance.

He held in them in contempt of court for not following his January order that gave them 60 days to be in compliance.

The couples are Joely and Mary Swartzentruver, who, along with their three young children, live along Amadei Road in Barr Township, and John and Susan Miller, who with their one child, living along Duman Road in Blacklick Townships.

They are members of the ultraconservative Swartzentruver sect which does not use modern conveniences.

There is not enough detail in this story to ascertain the motive of the judge.

Specifically, we would need to know the nature of the “compliance” which was demanded by the court.

My previous post was removed; it may appear later. I said to you, that I do not advocate the imprisonment of aboriginals, and that I completely support the Amish in their desire to be allowed to live how they see fit.

However, the fact remains that this story does not provide the details neccessary to identify who is in the wrong; there are any number of things this couple might be doing that would fully merit action by the court.

Well, it says they’re in violation of building and sewage codes. Look up Cambria County PA building and sewage codes, I’m sure that’s public info, if you really want to know what they’re not complying with. I’m willing to bet they’re using outhouses and don’t have electricity, etc., which is probably what the violation is. Or maybe they didn’t secure the proper permits and pay the fees when building a new barn. Well, duh. They’re freaking AMISH. That IS the way of life, cut off from the modern world. I don’t think when first settlers were homesteading they were required to run their plans by the county…

The nature of any sort of “compliance” to any government for anything is totally illegitimate in the absence of proof beyond a reasonable doubt that there such “non-compliance” is causing harm to another.

Taking one’s property for any reason, especially by the government, should be considered a crime against humanity.

It’s funny that the bible doesn’t have any quotes from Jesus regarding homosexuality, but christians like to claim that being gay is somehow antithetical to their beliefs.
(Unless you’re a bishop, apparently.)
I guess their all-powerful, infallible god just can’t get anything right by them.
Meanwhile, the parts from the bible they use to “prove” their point all come from the old testament – otherwise known as the “hebrew scriptures” – and yet most jews seem to have a live & let live attitude towards gay people.

The Amish usually stay in communities that have been built specifically for people who share their ridiculous belief that telephones, automobiles, computers, et al are all manifestations of satan, and for them to move to a modern community & expect the existing residents to kowtow to their anti-societal ways is no different than muslim women claiming they don’t have to show their face to get a driver’s license or that their families should be allowed to blast the call to prayer over a PA system several times a day.

The Bible doesn’t have quotes from Jesus about homosexuality, but the book of Romans and 1 Corinthians has a bit to say about homosexuality- those books were written by Paul, but nonetheless are included in the Bible, which is, in totality, The Word of God. You can argue against the Bible’s authenticity and believe all the “research” from people who are out to fault the Bible, but most Christians can see through that. The Bible is an amazing book and you won’t get me to think of it as anything but the Word of God, period. And I”m ont closed-minded- I just have integrity. Integrity? What’s that?!? I know it’s rare here in America, but it does still exist. And obviously, I’ve got my eyes wide open, being here on this lovely website full of fascinating information.
As for these Amish folk- I am surrounded by Amish folk, and they do have to comply with some “English” stuff- they have to have lights on their buggies, the other day I saw some Amish kids wearing bright yellow construction vests while riding their scooters. They aren’t stupid people. If these Amish folk weren’t complying with sewage rules, then something was definitely up. They don’t want to be contaminating their own wells, or the wells of their neighbors. I would like more info on what exactly the judge wanted from them. Amish people aren’t stupid or naive. They choose to live the way they live.

And the bible wouldn’t have any quotes referring to homosexuality would it? Considering the first known appearance of the word in print didn’t appear until 1869. The Bible say thou shalt not bear false witness…I am pretty sure we are smart enough to figure out that means you shouldn’t lie. So you say that Jesus doesn’t have any quotes regarding homosexuality and you’re really smart… The OT is just as relevant as the NT and I can guarantee that I can use either to prove the point that homosexuality is a sin against God, but then so are a lot of things that people do no matter what their race, color, creed, sexual preference, etc. are.

As far as the Homosexual Agenda I wouldn’t pigeon hole it to just that one idea…I would go as saying Satan’s agenda. Woe to those who call good evil and evil good. God warns us of this and as we look around everyday we see this happening. Those things God has defined as being good man is ever increasingly calling it evil and those things God deems as evil man is increasingly call it good. Things to which your society at one time said was wrong are becoming right and you call it progress.

As far as the separation of church and state I will leave that for another debate, but I will say this the concept and how it is being practiced today as when it was thought up in the beginning are two different things. It does not mean as you and many others seem to infer these days, which are the separation of one’s political beliefs and one’s religious/personal beliefs. And as far as unconstitutional I won’t even get into the topic of activist judges who determine what they believe is unconstitutional versus what the original intent was.

I could be wrong and would love proof though that there have been Amish people who have moved into modern communities and expected them to kowtow to their ways as you say. It would seem to me the opposite has happened, but then again you’re really smart…sooooo

I have probably seen modern communities creep up to the Amish communities as they do all communities, even those of wildlife, forests, etc. and then have expected everyone to conform to those modern ways. Almost as this article seems to have pointed out…hmmmmmm weird how that has happened. And yes you have made a good comparison between the way the Amish live their life and the Muslim faith…or have you?

Are you sure they chose to live in that community and not the other way around? Are you sure? From the information in the article can you make such a bold assertion and call it truth?

After that, Couldbeworse opines that the hebrew scriptures are just as relevant to christians as the new testament, despite the latter being the new covenant Christ brought to his followers to supplant the “old” testament, engages in semantics to avoid the issue, and then asks how I could know information easily found using any internet search engine.
And, Palehorse, you’re right, The Constitution does not mention “separation of church & state,” that was in a letter by Thomas Jefferson explaining what that document provides the US with, and I guess he would have no idea, right?

Really, though, do you honestly think that illiterate peasants from the middle east could write in greek – the language the bible was originally written in – and over 100 years after they were supposed to have lived at that?
If so, then you are terminally stupid, if not mentally deranged.
If not, then you would have acknowledge that it’s impossible to “misquote” the bible, as there are no direct quotes in the entire book in the first place, for all of the dialog – including the words of Jesus – was written centuries after the fact by people who had never even been to the holy land.
The parts of the bible where “god speaks about that” are all in the old testament, which is hebrew scripture detailing the mythological history of the jews – which, not surprisingly, does not fit in with either the known historical or archaeological records – and documents the covenant the jews had with Jehovah BEFORE Jesus brought his followers the new covenant of “Love one another.”
In other words, the “old” testament should have about as much relevance for a christian as the talmud does.
(Which is to say, quite a bit, but just try & explain that to a modern christian like yourself, eating barbeque pork at your church’s picnic on the sabbath.)
I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt, though, Raven: Let’s have the exact quote from the bible attributed to Jesus – who, believe it or not, many people do NOT consider to be god – regarding homosexuality.

D’Paul – You’re right, Jesus was a strict adherant to jewish law. As such, he would be very upset about modern christians ignoring them. You can’t on one hand say, “I’m opposed to homosexuality because it’s forbidden by jewish law, and I believe in the same things Jeusus did,” and then turn around and say “Hey, it’s Saturday, let’s go get some ribs, cheeseburgers, and some fried shrimp.”
If you do not honor the jewish holidays or the sabbath, and ignore jewish law in every other aspect of your life, it seems rather odd to latch onto one aspect of it to justify your prejudices.

Your assumptions about me are 100% incorrect, Gordy, perhaps you should consider any others you have made in this life in light of that.
These people obviously haven’t been living in this community since before modern plumbing, otherwise none of this would be an issue in the first place.
Regardless, your religion cannot be used as an excuse to opt out of local building/sewage codes, and they were told at least 30 days prior to this – some accounts I’ve read say 60 – that they weren’t in compliance, and that the owner of the property would be jailed if they didn’t make appropriate changes.
(Actually, the judge wanted to fine them, but they don’t believe in paying fines anymore than they believe in watching tv, and they chose to go to jail instead.)
Not only that, but this has been an issue in this county going back at least a year and a half, when the amish were caught dumping the waste from their outhouses onto their neighbors’ property near drinking wells, which is a pretty far cry from considerate christian behavior by anyone’s estimation.

Well said. In fact, the whole of our matrix-like civilization and all it’s technology has been created – quite deliberately – not to free us, but to enslave us, by the elite throughout history. Think about it, people. Who was in charge when we went from being hunter-gatherers, living in nature, to farmers (which then led to the rise of permanent settlements, which evolved into city-states, etc), about 10,000 years ago? There have been elites in control in every age and we know that the modern elite of today trace their ancestry and their religion back to the earliest civilizations, those of Babylon and Sumer. Human beings were never supposed to live outside of nature in the artificial environment we’ve created for ourselves over a period of thousands of years. We are all now enslaved by it and can never, without great struggle and sacrifice, return to our natural state. The best we could hope to achieve is some compromise between that and what we have always known.

I want to express that, in spite of all the cliques, there are only two kinds of Christians. I’m of the variety, which believes that “…by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: [it is] the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

I agree with the apologists, who discredit all other religions as systems of works, and I believe many here make a religion of political correctness, which cannot be based in Scripture or any word study.

To answer Gina, I’m familiar with many a Concordance, as well as common expressions, which could be found in extra Biblical sources, also.

In the language of the day, the Bible was abundantly clear.

I’m a having a little bit of grammar trouble, myself, in punctuating, “May-December romance.”

This old saying refers to relationships, in which one person is younger, and the other person is older.

Even in the most technical passages, the Bible never specifically prohibits the age difference, either directly or indirectly.

It is an assumption on my part that the betrothed are both conscientious and reproductively mature.

And, as far as I’m concerned, it was Scripturally inappropriate of the feminists to conflate a building code violator with a sexual reprobate, especially as women are explicitly instructed to learn in silence.

With all due respect, even though I have researched these issues in depth, I was willing to investigate a reference, if anyone could find one.

The Bible was not “codified” 300 years later, that is a falsehood…pure propaganda. You are talking about the Council of Nicea in 325 A.D. Long before the council of Nicea ever came together the first Christians already had a canon. A mere 30 years after the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Paul’s Epistles were some of the first writings along with the other apostle’s epistles. The Council of Nicea just stamped an “Official” mark on a canon that had existed for hundreds of years.

We live in an area where we need to use holding tanks (no public hookups yet but i’m sure they are soon to come) So holding tanks need pumped out…CORRECT??? well guess what they do with that truck load of shit after they pull out of the driveway? you guessed it they spread it on the fields!!!! yes they treat it with lime first but just for the records so the amish. if you don’t believe me call one of your local shit suckers & ask for the truth. My point is they never paid for a lisence to do this like the shit sucker trucks so now they are in trouble. No i’m not implying that its about chaching you do the math!
another fact, they locked ALL the buildings on the property including the ones that are up to compliance. (yes I saw it with my own eyes!)
They do have holding tanks but did not have it inspected because of lack of knowledge.
They was never informed of legal aide they showed up for court ALONE & was never given the opportunity to use a public defender (also against the law I thought)
They do not understand all English words & lone behold they was not offered a translater either.

I used to know someone who lived 2 roads over from these people. The way I have been told, they use outhouses, but then plow their fields with their own manure, which puts heavy metals into the ground. There are streams and waterways near them and it can and probably is contaminating the area’s water supply.

That is why the story points out the dispute is over sewage regulations.

I have not been out there in a few years, but this very story has been a “talk of the town” in that neighborhood for a long time now. I did not know it had come to this.

1) The show is set at NBC, which is located at 30 Rockefeller Plaza in NYC, hence the name.
2) The entire episode was centered around making fun of Greenzo, and Baldwin’s character is a staunch republican who doesn’t believe in global warming & is only kissing up to Gore for ratings.
3) People do this all over America, not just on sitcoms.
4) Buscemi’s character is supposed to be at least somewhat insane. In the same episode he was ecstatic about being able to get “free ice” at the commissary, and his “gun” comment was in reference to losing everything he had in a divorce.

There’s a big difference between stifling free speech and asking people to keep their language clean. It isn’t difficult to express you ideas and opinions without using foul language. When a person uses vile language it means they are not intelligent enough to express themselves through the written word. We all use some profanity occasionally but a great deal of the comments being posted here are foul and obscene. They not only degrade and shame the original poster but cast a long shadow on the truth/patriot movement.

If you’re terrified that’s your problem. My heart isn’t filled with fear and terror. And who in the heck are you warning anyway? If you can’t string a sentence together without throwing in five or six obscene words then this isn’t the place or the movement for you!

Nothing you’ve ever said could ever be confused with being “brilliant.” Second off, there is a big difference between denying your feelings are being in a state of fear and terror, exactly as you posted earlier so don’t try and weasel your way out of what you said.

I’ve read your posts and I really don’t care for you. I’ve watched you jump into conversations with your crystal power mumbo jumbo and persecute decent Christians because they have a different belief than you. No, you’re wrong. Because you don’t make the proper distinction between a person claiming to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ and a person actually following His teachings you falsely label evil human beings as Christians. Many, many people were murdered in the Name of Jesus Christ, of that I am sure of. But the people who were murdered were not murdered by genuine Christians. You refuse to understand and make this honest distinction.

I’ve listened to Alex for some years now and like his message and his great videos. etc. I also listened to William Cooper for years and was shocked and saddened at his harassment and murder by the brutal police state.

To my best recollection, I never heard Bill Cooper mention Alex Jones, and the few times I heard Alex mention Bill Cooper I don’t remember anything derogatory.

I think of both these men as true patriots and appreciate them for their courage and abilities.

And besides, we do not need to fight or quarrel with each other. The enemy is obvious and we need to concentrate on that enemy.

Then you missed Cooper’s post-Y2K show (January 1st, 2000), in which he exposed Alex Jones making up scare stories about Russia collapsing due to Y2K. Google it. There is a video on You Tube that has the audio from that show.

Yes, we do need to focus on the enemy, but we need intelligence (as in information) to do that, so we must be wary of all sources we trust, including Alex Jones.

A few years ago, I told the clerk of the township where I live, “If you people were around two hundred years ago, this country would never have been settled.”

I want to build a new house on my own land. I have to pay over $15,000 in “development charges,” I have to dig a new top-of-the-line septic system at $20,000 because their are no sewers here despite my aforementioned $15,000 tax. I have to spend at least another 10Gs on a well (no municipal fluoride here, either despite said 15Gs). Gotta have an extra-wide driveway to get my entrance permit from the highway. The house has to be at least 1,500 square feet on the main level. The house has to be on at least a one-acre lot (good thing I have five). And, oh yes, the house absolutely has to be hooked up to the electrical grid. When I told them I wanted to generate my own power, they thought I was nuts.

Right now, I live in a drafty, run-down cabin. I pay the township $3,000 per year in “rent.” If I build my house without their blessing, or don’t pay their rent, they will be sure to remind me that there is one absolute service they are happy to provide: a civil servant dressed up like Darth Vader.

There are still places in the U.S. where a man can be relatively (the key word here is relative) free. Sounds like your little township has taken a few ques from big brother. I’ve never heard of it being a law anywhere that you had to except power from their grid. You should brush up on the local laws and find out the real score.

Yup, that seems to be the truth.

The police state is getting stronger and stronger very rapidly. I’d be wary of going to a hospital for any kind of treatment. If you disagree with their institutionalized belief system they will do everything in their power to punish you. Don’t feel that vaccines are safe? Be prepared to be plotted against behind your back by hospital staff. Admit yourself to an emergency room for an accidental drug overdose? Then expect to get committed if you have recovered and feel like leaving. All it takes is two doctors being in agreement and saying that you are a danger to yourself and others for them to “legally” place you (commit you) in a psychiatric facility of their choice.

Even if they have no real proof and haven’t done a proper evaluation…off you go in chains and irons. That is too much power to place in the hands of two men. If you’re acting rationally and you are medically out of “imminent danger” then you should be able to leave…but that’s not the case…You are their property until THEY say you can leave.

check out Indian Reservations Gary. Their laws are very different. The tribal police (depending on the Reservation) wouldn’t bother you at all. building codes are much more lax which will give you more freedom to build when and how you like.

The Amish there likely use an outhouse. The local “environmental codes” don’t have any provisions for outhouses, usually. An outhouse is really the most environmentally sound way of handling human waste. Move the outhouse frequently to a new hole and grow something over the old hole to use the fertilizer. Or pull the outhouse back and clean out the manure and throw it in manure spreader and put it on a field. The Judge in this case is just your typical Kangaroo Court Judge, an administrator of Admirality Law or Roman Law, NOT Common Law, which is the only real Law here. There is NOTHING lawful about this Judge and what he has done to harm these Amish people. We need to be on the side of the Amish there.

This particular Amish sect is not “radical”. All real Amish are very conservative and really practice the “being separate from the world”. The true Amish don’t have electricity in their houses, they aren’t hooked up to the grid of electricity, they have no tv or radio or computer in their home or telephone. They heat their home with wood. They have no air conditioner. They use kerosene or gasoline lamps and candles. They use horse power, not tractor power. They do their own building, and they are very good builders. A county requiring building permits, well permits, septic system permits, etc. is all UNLAWFUL by the common law. It’s nothing but police state tyranny, which we should never accept.

This is most certainly not the first sign of religous persecution of the Amish. I have a thread dedicated to this on the Prison Planet Forum. In my area, they have stolen a child from them and forced surgery against their beliefs. Then gave the child back, since he was not being “abused or neglected”. There is also many ongoing disputes over building codes here.

Actually – As much as I hate to say it – if the title of the land is held by the state it is not private property. And acting as a Trustee for the private trust that involves the holding of the legal title to the property, the judge acting as a public trustee has the duty to enforce the rules and regs of the public according to public policy. So unless they can remove the lien that the state has on that property via the title to the land – they have the legal right to enforce the sewage codes or whatever, by what ever means they deem necessary – the constitution gives them that right because under article six – the states have become surety for the federal and under that they have become debtors and debtors have no rights – only obligations in the creditor/debtor relationship.

They have a remedy – but it appears like most of us constitutional lovers – we will never see and understand what that remedy is.

Basically it is a serious in-depth study of what I have compiled as my personal objective view of notes, conversations and observations between many Christians, Pastors and lay leaders in Christendom. Our human experience as it relates to Spirituality refers to the internal forces that motivate us towards Goodness and the respect of the Divine being that created humankind. Spiritual competition is the Fundamental superstructure that defines mind control. The world is full of control freaks. The Christian community is not exempt from these Spiritual attacks. We are saved from our sins by the power of the Holy Spirit working through Christ Jesus our Lord from God The Father. After salvation your Mind becomes a spiritual competition at the highest frequency for Good or Evil. Walking with the Lord in the Jungle of Life staying on the straight narrow road of spiritual understanding will keep you from falling into the Pits of unbelief and unfaithfulness. He and she, him and her are used in the context where it is applicable. My use of the word man or man’s is in context as it would equate with Human.

Hey, i live in the county where this mess is happening. Originally, there was a problem with sewage from a school outhouse (in another county) which was infiltrating to another person’s property. I can see where this would become a problem for the recipient of the sewage who would have a right to expect the problem remedied. BUT… this is not the case for these two families. Generally, around here the Amish live somewhat off to themselves and bother NO ONE! They are a moral and decent people who work hard and grow some amazing produce. They just want to live as they see fit. THIS WHOLE THING IS AN EGGREGIOUS VIOLATION OF THEIR RIGHTS! People around here are not pleased with how this is going. We should all be able to live in our homes as we see fit as long as we are not harming anyone else… and that is how they live. The courts should be going after CRIMINALS, not these good people. Its so obvious where this is going…. and what the rest of us can expect when we do not CONFORM.

These people are the salt of the earth! I was just talking to my husband yesterday about the Amish and how they are some of the last truly self sufficient people left in this country. The Luciferian control freaks can’t abide that! It was only a matter of time until they were going to force these beautiful, pure, disease free people into their system. I knew when they did, time would be short. And here it is! Property taxes are worse than income taxes because you can never really own your own land and raise your own food. The Amish are a great source of non-certified organic food in Pennsylvania. They have lots of fruit/vegetable stands set up in the countryside, some with prices like a bushel of tomatoes for ten bucks, or 3 or 4 for a dollar eggplants, peppers, squash, etc. that used to be the standard price in grocery stores years ago. And if they’re really Amish, they don’t use pesticides, although you can ask what they sprayed on their crops. It’s just that they won’t pay thousands of dollars for organic certification.

I wonder if the Amish folk consider the Bible from cover to cover. Cause in Romans chapter 13 we are to follow the rules of those who govern us, however, Man’s law never supercedes God’s law. Since the sewage ordinance does not go against the laws of God then they need to put it in.

Side note: The Bible is written in hebrew and the greeks translated the new testament into Greek word for word. Even the Jewish Scholars can see the Hebrew writing style the Greeks stuck with when translating. The word Rapture is Latin, Tribulation is a man made word as well as trinity, and Easter (So is Christmas a unChristian terminology).

Actually, most biblical scholars think the bible was originally written in greek, and the many mistakes regarding topography & geography have led them to conclude that the people writing it had never even been to the holy land.
That’s what they teach at seminary school, anyway.

I would like to see more factual details of this story reported! I have been following this story as I used to live around the Amish and Mennonite Community. This story is NOT an attack on the Amish religion. It was concerning an Amish family who posed a health risk to others in how they processed and disposed of human waste and water. There are countless Amish homes who properly handle the disposal of human waste and water. The issue was not that they were Amish. It was about this families neglect on waste disposal.

The Amish and their way of life are supposted to be protected by the 1st Amendendment Right to free exercise of religion.

The only ways the Govt. might get jurisdiction is through the 13th Amendment legalizing voluntary servitude via a Social Security Number; or through the 14th Amendment term “person” that means “someone subject to the jurisdiction of the US.” (see respective Ammendments) Most Govt. documents use some form of the term “person” in the laws related to that document in the definitions section of that law. Signing such govt. documents creates the presumption of govt. jurisdiction.

Obviously each case is different and the media never reports all the details. However, I hope and pray that the Amish get their Religous Rights upheld in appeal.

This family might follow the Amish lifestyle but they belong to a sect of it. If they follow the bible then they know that cleanliness is next to Godliness. Besides where in the bible does it say you cannot use plumbing, or you don’t have to have your house up to code. I’ve read it and cannot find it. The problem is they need a good lawyer or the ACLU needs to step in.
