Declan McCullagh reports for CBS News that the Department of Justice sent a formal request to Indymedia ordering it to provide details of all reader visits on a certain day. A grand jury subpoena required the independent news website “not to disclose the existence of this request” unless authorized by the Justice Department. The subpoena and gag order represent a new level of government intrusion into the operation of a free press in this country.

The subpoena issued by U.S. Attorney Tim Morrison in Indianapolis demands a transcript of “all IP traffic to and from www.indymedia.us” on June 25, 2008. It required website administrator Kristina Clair of the Philadelphia-based Indymedia website to “include IP addresses, times, and any other identifying information,” including email addresses, physical addresses, registered accounts, and Indymedia readers’ Social Security Numbers, bank account numbers, credit card numbers, and other information on users of the website.
Clair told McCullagh and CBS: “I didn’t think anything we were doing was worthy of any (federal) attention.” She called the Electronic Frontier Foundation in San Francisco and the organization agreed to represent her.
The Electronic Frontier Foundation has noted a number of problems with the government subpoena, including that it was not personally served, and that a court order is required for the server logs. Kevin Bankston, a senior staff attorney at the San Francisco-based EFF, noted the Indymedia does not store its server logs.
Indymedia, short for Independent Media Center, is a global participatory network of journalists that report on political and social issues. It originated during the anti-WTO protests worldwide in 1999 and remains closely associated with the global justice movement, which criticizes neo-liberalism, and its associated institutions. Indymedia uses an open publishing and democratic media process that allows anybody to contribute, according to Wikipedia.
“If you get a subpoena and you’re a journalist, they can’t gag you,” Lucy Dalglish, the executive director of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of The Press, told McCullagh. “I have seen any number of these things withdrawn when counsel for someone who is claiming a reporter’s privilege says, ‘Can you tell me the date you got approval from the attorney general’s office’… I’m willing to chalk this up to bad lawyering on the part of the DOJ, or just not thinking.”

In 2004, the DOJ sent a grand jury subpoena demanding information about who posted lists of Republican delegates to the GOP convention in New York. An Indymedia hosting service in Texas received a subpoena demanding server logs in relation to an investigation of an attempted murder in Italy.
Obama promised “change” during the election. However, as the latest effrontery to the First Amendment by the Department of Justice reveals, nothing has changed and the Obama administration intends to continue the unconstitutional policies of the Bush administration.

pilotsfor911truth seem to be fixated on flight paths but what strikes me the most is how whatever hit penetrated and then exploded. This was a bomb-blast hardened building. The exterior walls had been reinforced. A commercial airplane would have spilled fuel over a wide area on the outside, not thrown debris straight up in the air from inside like a high-explosive warhead might.

So we can safely assume that infowars.com has also received such an order, and was gagged fro discussing it. This is why Jones mentioned briefly that the FBI visited his offices several months ago but he didn’t provide any details. The Feds don’t need the subpoena to identify users who visit this site. It is my understanding that they can monitor the traffic to any node in a telecommunications network. Remember the Pittsburgh punk, Poplawski, who killed three police officers? The Feds provided the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) with the punk’s Internet traffic records, which is how they knew he visited PrisonPlanet. If you doubt this, just think about it. The punk was just charged with killing three police officers. There is no way the media whores would risk a mistrial or a civil lawsuit by accusing the defendant of being a neo-nazi unless they knew WITHOUT A DOUBT that he posted the exact comments attributed to him on various websites, including postings on PrisonPlanet. How did the media whores know this if they didn’t serve a subpoena? Answer: the Feds via the SPLC fed the media whores the info via illegal wire taps — something they do on a routine, on-going basis.
With regards to the article above, the DOJ is likely using the subpoena for a couple reasons. First, because they know that the fact that they served the subpoena will become public knowledge. It’s meant to intimidate and scare people who contribute to the independent news media sites (Exhibit A. Your Post, “Auctions”). Second, they cannot use the info they obtain against users unless they obtain it in a manner that permits them to admit it as evidence in court, which is the only reason they subpoenaed AJ. The FBI came to AJ for a limited purpose, and AJ disclosed this to everyone.

I was curious about this earlier today, so I checked out indymedia.
They are a “left-leaning” group, but they are ONTO the whole corruption of the WTO and the world bank situation. They are obviously getting too close to the truth of how the banksters have taken over through fiat currency! I say that, but I am not in agreement that capitalism is evil….the people that have hijacked it ARE!
In the times of Acts, after Jesus was crucified and risen, the early church lived in a sort of communism…but the people that lived that way were so impacted by the pure motives of their Christian beliefs that it worked. So if it was still in the camera that means you developed the film and then watched it? Cause you know cameras back then you had to develop the film not just plop it in the VCR.

VCR recording technology is far beyond the abilities of the early 1960’s. YOU ARE CORRECT about this aspect of incredulity..
I have been to garage sales, as well. I have bought books at such sales, as well.
iF I bought a book at a garage sale, and failed to open the cover and actually READ it, this would be a waste of good money.
IF I bought a camera at a garage sale, and found undeveloped film within, would I be curious as to the content, and perhaps pay to have it developed? There might be some ‘memories’ archived within, that might hold personal value to the former owner, perhaps, and it might possibly be within my limited means to bring an actual moment of ‘GOOD’ to the former owner’s life…
There MIGHT be a point as to what you post, but, there are ALL KINDS OF reasons why this might be (not ‘IS’) a legit posting.
Gotta weigh ALL the options, before ‘passing judgement’.

You should assume everything you write or visit is being logged. I know I do. You can always use anonymous proxies to visit sites that the government will consider questionable, but that won’t eliminate the risk completely.
As for Infowars, I’m sure it’s high on the list, but what advantage would there be to outing it now, it’s a great source of information for government agencies.
If you were smart you would question everyone, Alex has said this himself. I find his stories interesting and research them outside of his circle if it’s something important to me.
We’ve all read stories here we disagree with or feel the spin was a bit much, but I keep saying, at least they’re putting it out there. But ultimately, you have to think for yourself and become a critical thinker, otherwise you’re just a sheep of a different color.

I can not believe the amount of quality material that exists on this site. The site is extremely eye catching and pulls the reader straight in, the articles are great quality and are very professionally written.
