Remember David Chen?
He’s the owner of Hasty Market who was originally charged with kidnapping, assault, carrying a concealed weapon, and forcible confinement for running down a thief who was stealing from his store in Toronto’s Chinatown area.
The thief testified against Chen, who was acquitted. The thief stole again, and was banned from the area.
The apparent injustice of that case still resonates, and has persuaded Prime Minister Stephen Harper to advocate changes in the Criminal Code to broaden the citizen’s arrest and self-defence laws.
The Chen case pales before the most recent incident in Toronto, where a guy escorting his girlfriend to her home at night, found signs of a break-end-enter, and checked out the house.
