[efoods]A lawyer for an Indian accused of being a member of a Pakistan-based militant group and conducting reconnaissance of Mumbai landmarks before the 2008 attacks, was shot dead on Thursday, a senior police official said.

Shahid Azmi, a lawyer for Fahim Ansari, who along with Sabahuddin Ahmed, is accused of being a member of Lashkar-e-Taiba, was shot at by unknown gunmen in a Mumbai suburb.

“He was shot at in his office. We have to ascertain the identity of the assailants. We have some clues,” said Deven Bharti, an additional commissioner of police.

The trial of the two Indian nationals, and the man accused of being the lone surviving gunman from among the 10 who attacked Mumbai, is ongoing in the city. There have been reports of threats to lawyers of all three.
