Like silent sentries, they stand guard over 690 miles of varied terrain stretching from the Rio Grande to the Pacific.
About 50 of the 276 monuments date to the 1850s, constructed after the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ending the Mexican War.
The majority were erected in the 1890s, when the land was resurveyed and a connect-the-dots line of obelisks – from a quarter mile to five miles apart – was installed by the International Boundary Commission to demarcate the boundary between Mexico and the United States.
