Mandatory Service Bill Lives On

It seemed like a victory, of sorts. Last week the Senate approved a bill to radically expand the AmeriCorps program. The bill initially contained language that proposed a study for mandatory service for all young people in the United States, but this language was removed as the bill moved through the Senate and did not appear in the final version.

Well, it’s baaaaaaack. The language was stripped from one bill, but it suddenly appeared in another. It is now contained in HR 1444, due to crawl across the House floor this week. HR 1444 is sponsored by Rep. Jim McDermott, a Washington state Democrat, and is assigned to the House Committee on Labor and Education.
The bill, under Section 4 (b)6, states:
Whether a workable, fair, and reasonable mandatory service requirement for all able young people could be developed, and how such a requirement could be implemented in a manner that would strengthen the social fabric of the Nation and overcome civic challenges by bringing together people from diverse economic, ethnic, and educational backgrounds.
How “mandatory service,” i.e. servitude, strengthens the “social fabric of the Nation” is not explained.
HR 1444, like its earlier parent 1388, includes the prospect of a “public service academy, a four-year institution that offers a federally funded undergraduate education with a focus on training future public sector leaders” and reaches all the way down to primary school, requiring a review of “the means to develop awareness of national service and volunteer opportunities at a young age by creating, expanding and promoting service options for primary and secondary school students and by raising awareness of existing incentives.”

That is, “existing incentives” as determined by the government.
In addition to Obama’s election campaign pledge to create a 250,000 strong national security force as big, powerful and well-funded as our combined U.S. military forces, Obama’s chief of staff Rahm Emanuel has authored a book (The Plan: Big Ideas for America) that calls for three months of compulsory civil service for all Americans aged 18 to 25.
So it looks like the goblin of compulsory national service has not gone away, it has simply morphed into another bill, soon to be considered by the House.
One thing is for certain: the federal government considers you and your children little more than ciphers to be press ganged into mandatory “service” to a government addicted to wars waged in the name of international bankers.

I feel you brother. It is indeed hard times we are facing. I was laid off right after christmas, and the job hunt is rough and frustrating. the only people keeping thier jobs are the gov employees. And the disabled vets are getting thier bennefits cut way down because we were robbed blind by the banks. When is it going to be enough? very soon if this s--- keeps up.

I feel you Jeramiah3rd, I got laid off as a pre-school teacher because they told me preschool was becomming a luxury and do to state policy(wich becomes more envasive every year) I was an “extra” and that I also didn’t have any kids attending their school, so I was no longer needed in teaching kids. Now I haven’t been able to get my FBI background clearance re-newed so I can’t even get an interview. I have no criminal record and tons of teaching expeirence, but no word on my FBI clearance. I’ve been laid off since August, FBI background checks only take about a week to recieve back. WTF!

Mandatory volunteerism is just that. When you come to a traffic light, and there is no one there to stop you, you stop voluntarily, you wait for the light to turn green and then you go. It’s a lot like paying your taxes. Every year you voluntarily file your tax forms and you pay whatever taxes you owe voluntarily without anyone telling you anything. Mandatory volunteerism works a lot like that. You volunteer to do a job and if you don’t; you go to jail. What is so difficult to understand about that?

HR 1444 sounds a lot like the start of 1984 – like servitude to government devoid of freedom of even our thoughts. When I read 1984 years ago, I never dreamed that this would ever become a reality. Right now, universities and higher education institutes are veering away from learning to think creatively and critically and more toward a unified set of thoughts and principles. I actually went back to college for my nursing degree in my late 40’s. Even Political Science textbooks were pro-government and essays from the students were graded on what the professor thought was closer to the government way of thinking. I am beginning to think that critical thought on the part of a citizen who questions the stupidity coming out of Washington may actually be a death sentence. Even my job (the hospital) doesn’t want anyone speaking against government policy. My car had a “911 was an inside job” sticker on it and my supervisor said it would be better if I removed it because “so many people have family members in the service”. We need to return to freedom from unreasonable taxation, freedom from income tax, and accountable representatives in Washington who really speak for the people. My retirement investment has all but disappeared (stock market 401K investment by Prudential) and I will need to work up into my 70’s to keep a roof over my head. And that’s if I can keep a job. What will I do with Mandatory Volunteerism? Oh, I still kept my bumper sticker anyway.

I’m probably going to be called all sorts of names or accused of being some kind of agent for doing this. But, I’m going to say this anyways.
This story is coming a tad late, the bill was referred to committee on March 11th. No action has been taken since. HR 1444 is essentially Title VI of the originally introduced HR 1388. HR 1388 passed only because title VI was removed. This is an attempt to get the legislation through again. It couldn’t get through once, it won’t get through again; hence why it has languished in committee.
And it will continue to languish in committee. Especially since it *only* contains legislation to form a committee that no clear need can be demonstrated for. There’s no appropriations, no pork. Nothing that would entice someone to bring it up for discussion.

Until then, just add this bill onto your RSS readers, watch for any activity and don’t forget they are there. Just please don’t cry wolf every time a piece of draconian legislation hits the house floor, or else the villagers won’t come when something truly bad comes to the house floor, like HR 1.

Looking through the bill, it’s actually worse than the article defines. Additional “specific topics” include:
“(3) Whether there is an appropriate role for Federal, State, and local governments in overcoming the issues that deter volunteerism and national service and, if appropriate, how to expand the relationships and partnerships between different levels of government in promoting volunteerism and national service.”
Which implies that they will be looking into how to disseminate propaganda down through State and local governments for any national service, including any mandatory service.
“(4) Whether existing databases are effective in matching community needs to would-be volunteers and service providers.”
Which implies that they will desire to implement a more detailed database to ensure that those that can do service will do it.
Also, the Committee will have from Section 7 (Powers of Committee):
“(c) Obtaining Official Data- Upon request of the Chairperson, the head of any department or agency shall furnish information to the Commission that the Commission deems necessary to enable it to carry out this Act.”
Which means they’ll have access to Census data, and will determine if that’s enough or not, would be my guess.
NOTE: This bill itself does not enforce Mandatory Service. It does establish a Commission however to create legislation for it within 22 months.
