| The fact that McCain said he yearned to be a dictator without so much as cracking a smile makes the comment all the more disturbing especially in comparison to similar sentiments expressed at least three times by George W. Bush. | |
During an interview with the Des Moines Register editorial board yesterday, John McCain – presumably making an attempt at humor – said with a completely straight face that he aspired to be a dictator, while decrying the Congressional rejection of the bailout bill.
“I just want to make a comment about the obvious issue and that is the failure of Congress to act yesterday. Its just not acceptable,” said McCain. “This is just a not acceptable situation. I’m not saying this is the perfect answer. If I were dictator, which I always aspire to be, I would write it a little bit differently.”
McCain has urged the Bush administration to bypass the will of Congress and invoke executive orders to pass the bailout bill, along with a further $1 trillion dollar spend on buying up bad mortgage debt.
McCain’s senior economic advisor Douglas Holtz-Eakin has also called on the executive branch to ignore Congress and force through the bailout legislation, which was voted down on Monday.
Another senior economic advisor to McCain, Phil Gramm, vice chairman of UBS’s US division and a lobbyist for UBS, successfully pushed for foreign banks to be included in the bailout plan after they were initially excluded.
The fact that McCain said he yearned to be a dictator without so much as cracking a smile makes the comment all the more disturbing especially in comparison to similar sentiments expressed at least three times by George W. Bush.
Bush infamously said, “If this were a dictatorship, it would be a heck of a lot easier, just so long as I’m the dictator,” during a December 2000 speech.
He also remarked, “A dictatorship would be a heck of a lot easier, there’s no question about it,” in a July 2001 Business Week interview.
When Bush was Governor of Texas in 1998 he stated, “You don’t get everything you want. A dictatorship would be a lot easier.”

The increased FDIC insurance is a joke. How many of you have 100k in the bank, let alone 250k? Don’t know about you but my family and I live check to check, and I’m a college grad with a great job. Once again it only helps the rich and perhaps to a lesser degree some small businesses, real-estate speculators and mortgage lenders, etc. Definitely no help for ordinary citizens. Its just f---ing sad.

We need to stop looking at this “election” situation in terms of “Who will the American people elect?”
The fact of the matter is that given the electronic voting machines, the election WILL BE STOLEN, and the popular will, which is based on a corrupt and fraudulent system where there are no real choices anyway, will be subverted across the land on election day. The questions we should be asking are “Who will still this election (CIA, foreign governments, corrupt officials, etc.)?” and “Based on who the selection is, what are the reasons behind the choice? What is the agenda they intend to set?” They are waging war on us!! But by trying to know who is selected, by whom and why, we may be able to better understand the next immediate phase of enemy operations.
These are the two of the most terrifying “candidates” ever put before us, and they are TOLD to say things like this by the even-worse people who puppeteer them. We get dictatorship either way; we’ve had it for a long time. Obama is a terrorist, Biden is a terrorist, McCain is a terrorist and we get a horrible situation either way. We need to stop caring about how this will turn out (in terms of who is selected) and start caring about how we are going defend ourselves and take care of our families and friends.

Don’t go rushing out on to the Gnutella p2p network (Limewire Frostwire) without doing a lot of screening and checking with friends. Someone needs to begin putting forth petitions to RECALL every member of Congress or the Whitehouse who votes for any bill, regardless of what they call it, that bails out these greed mongers. ALEX!!! The bill sent to the house thet was voted on on Monday and failed was 106 pages. The bill just passed by the senate on wednesday is 451 pages. It is bloated with all kinds of new energy tax incentives and basically they are going to phase out our gas outos and they are to be replaced with electric and alternative fuel vehicles. All the money is going to coal, oil and alternative fuel sources. I only skimmed through it over about 15 minutes but I can not believe this is BLOATED with energy provisions, not to mention you have to know what language they are speaking to read it.
They are trying to pass a fast one on us and swindle us again…SOMEONE PLEASE GET ON THIS AND SEND IT AROUND THE WORLD. OUR CONGRESS MUST BE MADE AWARE BEFORE THEY VOTE ON IT. THIS IS INSANE!!!

I don’t care for the system either,but come on, McCain has a very dry wit.
I detest it when people exaggerate things, even about the opposition. It undermines
your credibility. Maybe these off hand jokes are in poor taste, but they are after all,
jokes. When Bush kids that things would be easier if America were a dictatorship, it at least underscores, if only for now, the fact that it isn’t.

i think both parties believe that whoever gets ‘voted’ into the presidency will have an opportunity to become dictator of america. big brother. but i also think this whole bailout scam screwed their plans. The people don’t support it. honestly, i don’t.

He says that “Congress failed to act”. Um the whole idea behind congress is that they do ACT and when they do, their word is final. Get over it and stop trying to bully and whine about the fact that they voted against the bill.

Yes. lets spend even more money to help our swindling economy. It makes oh so much sense to get help for foreign banks i mean its not like we have to pay them back. The bailout will do nothing but make our economy weaker. And Mccain can just go die if he thinks its perfectly fine to just go pass congress and pass and laws you want. Dictator???? Pretty darned scary. Sometimes one’s innermost feelings slip out under the guise of humor. I didn’t see nor hear it as humor however, and McCain looked pretty serious to me when it was said, so much so, that I thought I couldn’t possibly have heard the words correctly.
Too much ironhand, ironheart, and arrogance to make me comfortable. Disheartening to think any candidate would even joke about such things as dictatorship, but watching McCain’s demeanor does reflect his frustration at being held back, and not having the ability to be in total control of everyone’s opinions, decisions, etc.
