Military May Patrol Bar Zone In Canadian City

Authorities in Barrie, Ontario are considering a proposal to allow troops to patrol bar areas on weekends in a supposed attempt to prevent rowdiness, another example of the militarization of law enforcement and the public being conditioned to accept martial law.
“City police and Camp Borden officers are discussing using joint street patrols to help keep the peace in Barrie’s busy entertainment district on peak weekends,” reports the Toronto Star, as part of a move to “cement the base’s partnership with Barrie police” (police and military merging into one enforcement unit).
“Teaming up with military police to patrol the bar zone is a concept “we wouldn’t have any real problems with,” Barrie chief Wayne Frechette said in an interview. “Would extra bodies help us? Sure.”

The proposal is supposedly aimed at tackling the rowdy behavior of off duty soldiers from the nearby army base, despite Barrie chief Wayne Frechette admitting that the troops “don’t pose a big problem in Barrie bars and restaurants”.
In addition, Joshua Abel, a Barrie bartender told the Star that he had not heard any reports of military personnel starting trouble.
The troop patrols are purportedly only aimed at “their own personnel and not civilians in Barrie,” but since military personnel attending the bars will be in plain clothes, who is to know the difference?
Authorities say that the “sight of military police on foot patrol might help curb rowdyism,” but since all parties agree that there is little rowdyism anyway, what is the real purpose behind the move?
In case the authorities in Barrie are not to up on their history, here’s a reminder – troops patrolling the streets engaging in law enforcement duties in peace time is a scene more commonly associated with third world dictatorships, not with developed western free societies.

I hope they don’t get any ideas to try this here. It would not end well. I’m not positive, but unless there is a formal declaration of martial law, military personnel do not have police powers. They have absolutely no authority. Remember that state trooper that killed those three Green Berets when he wouldn’t surrender his weapon? In fact, I wonder what the implications could possibly be of someone in military uniform using physical force against a civilian under the color of law absent some formal declaration of martial law. Such an act would have to be violation of a civilian’s constitutional rights on some level, which would be a defacto violation of the soldier’s oath, which could further be considered treason, and treason is an act of war. Indeed, it is a capital crime punishable by death. Faced with such a situation (an act of war), I would think the courts would have to support a civilian’s use of lethal force under such circumstances. I wouldn’t be the same as an altercation between only civilians. I may be over thinking it, but I am pretty sure anyone advocating such a idea has not thought enough.

Being somewhat familiar with the Barrie area as well as the nearby base, I find it rather troubling that they are considering this move. Ok, I know (mostly from old movies) that MP’s used to patrol bar districts near bases, but this isn’t quite the same. For one, although the bar area of Barrie can get lively during the summer, they state that military personnel are not really a problem. Secondly, MP’s dealing only with military personnel is one thing, but plain clothes military members are a whole new deal. That woud not be a good development.
As for those people who keep feeding the troll (troyfromvw)…QUIT IT!!….I’m getting tired of wading through the s---.

I work security at the largest club in Barrie and say this is Bull! The Military guys have ALWAYS givin us respect in the bar and i cannot remember a time where they started a fight. It is true that they may get invlolved in them from time to time, but never start them. I’ve also never had these guys take a swing at me… that cannot be said for the regulars.

A lot of bars now scan in your ID before you can even get into them. They claim that it is for our protection and to keep the trouble makers out of all bars. This of course is always the justification that Big brother uses for expanding their control grid, they always claim it is for our safety.
I myself will refuse to go into a bar that invades my privacy in such away. Once you allow that your ID to be scanned they have your name date stamped with location. It can be cross referenced with whoever you entered the bar with. People tend to go along with this invasive intrusion of personal freedom and say well I haven’t done anything wrong so why should I care if I am being monitored, not realizing that there personal privacy has just been violated and they don’t give a damn, which just gives the control grid a means to track them. If people are going to go into bars to cause trouble then they most likely will be using bogus ID and go undetected by the control grid anyway. Criminals do not play by the rules.
