Mother Gives Mentally Ill Son to State Because She Can’t Afford Health Care

[efoods]A Nebraska mother made a heart-wrenching decision this week.

She filed paperwork to make her 13-year-old son, Alex, a ward of the state of Nebraska.

She’s giving up legal custody of her child in order for him to get the mental health treatment he needs.

Angie Thiel said she’ll be treated like a criminal.

“The sheriff will serve me papers and I’ll have to go to court and plead guilty to having an ungovernable child,” said Thiel.

The Lincoln, Neb. Mother said her son lives with bipolar disorder, a mental illness that can cause violent, unpredictable behaviors.operation CNN has its world headquaters.
