NC Sheriff To Residents: Fight Back Against Crime by Taking Up Arms

“You better be able to take care of business until we get there if you have to protect your family..”

In the midst of a violent crime wave, a North Carolina sheriff has advised residents in his municipality to take up arms to defend their lives and property, instead of having to wait for cops to show up.

Speaking at a community meeting on Monday night, Harnett County Sheriff Larry Rollins acknowledged a rise in violent drug and gang-related crime, and told residents that, to ensure his family’s safety, he personally never leaves home “without a gun.”

“When I am out with my family, even though I am a cop, I don’t go anywhere without a gun,” Rollins stated to more than 100 people at the Spring Hill United methodist Church in Upper Little River Township. “I mean it’s sad we have to have that attitude, but I am going to protect myself and my family.”

The sheriff voiced a talking point long familiar to Second Amendment supporters: when seconds count, cops are often minutes away.

“I want my deputies at your house just as fast as they can when you got a problem,” the sheriff declared, “but you better be able to take care of business until we get there if you have to protect your family.”

Rollins was addressing the worries of concerned residents, many of whome were “afraid to leave their homes — afraid of the growing violence,” according to ABC 11 News.

Rollins joins a long list of sheriffs who have recently stood up for citizen’s rights to own and protect themselves with firearms, recognizing the importance of the Second Amendment and one’s right to self defense.

Last month, Detroit Police Chief James Craig came out praising gun owners for intimidating criminals, crediting the armed populace for a 15 percent drop in crime from the previous year.

“Criminals are getting the message that good Detroiters are armed and will use that weapon,” Craig stated, according to The Detroit News.

Milwaukee County Sheriff David A. Clarke Jr. also made waves in January of last year when he insisted residents take responsibility for their own safety, and encouraged them to consider “taking a certified safety course in handling a firearm so you can defend yourself until we get there.”

“You have a duty to protect yourself and your family,” Clarke stated in a public service announcement radio spot.

Sheriff Clarke joined the Alex Jones Show last year following his statements.

And long before the current surge of illegal immigration, Hudspeth County Sheriff Arvin West also told ranchers in 2010 to lock and load, in response to increased violence along the US-Mexico border.

“You farmers, I’m telling you right now, arm yourselves,” West said. “As they say the old story is, it’s better to be tried by 12 than carried by six. Damn it, I don’t want to see six people carrying you.”

Sheriff Rollins’ statements in defense of everyone’s God-given right to self defense are commendable. He and many of the other sheriffs mentioned are members of the Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association, an organization that helps members “understand their oaths to uphold the Constitution of the United States of America.”
