    February 11, 2009

James Turner, the chairman of the national consumer education group Citizens for Health, has expressed shock and outrage after reading a new report from scientists outlining the dangers of the artificial sweetener Splenda (sucralose).

    • A d v e r t i s e m e n t
    • efoods

In animals examined for the study, Splenda reduced the amount of good bacteria in the intestines by 50 percent, increased the pH level in the intestines, contributed to increases in body weight and affected P-glycoprotein (P-gp) levels in such a way that crucial health-related drugs could be rejected.

The P-gp effect could result in medications used in chemotherapy, AIDS treatment and treatments for heart conditions being shunted back into the intestines, rather than being absorbed by the body.

According to Turner, “The report makes it clear that the artificial sweetener Splenda and its key component sucralose pose a threat to the people who consume the product. Hundreds of consumers have complained to us about side effects from using Splenda and this study … confirms that the chemicals in the little yellow package should carry a big red warning label.”

Wow, the timing of this article is completely weirding me out. I found a box of this stuff in my boyfriend’s cupboards and decided to use it in my coffee this morning. I thought to myself, “I wonder if this is just as bad as Aspartame…”. I think I’ll just go back to sugar now, lol.

      jeff Reply:

Use Stevia, sweets. It was just approved by the FDA to be used as a sweetner and is no longer classified as a health supplement. Not that we can really trust the FDA, but i suppose you cant be completely corrupted.

      T Reply:

actually stevia wasn’t recently approved…. two different isolated chemicals derived from stevia have been approved just in time for Pepsi to come out with their new drink. We don’t know if that is bad or good. Stevia as a whole is wonderful. But here they are again possibly messing up a good thing.

      T Reply:

so I agree with you Jeff, use stevia, but lets wait and see what happens to the willing masses that consume this new derivative of stevia

      criss Reply:

Darn, don”t tell me that. I use Nu Naturals stevia because all the others had that bitter taste, but this brand “worked out” the bitterness. I love the vanilla one in plain yogurt. I hope you don’t mean we should be eating the leaves. :)

Goddamn it! I weened myself off of white sugar….next i weened myself off of aspartame….giving up diet soda all together…i have even noticed a difference in my waistline after ditching the “diet” drinks….including the ones with Splenda instead of aspartame: now i use Splenda in my coffee…thinking i had beat the dangerous cycle of poison i was ingesting but this news just pisses me off to no end!

I will start using a small amount of raw sugar to sweeten coffee or tea….no more man-made sweetners because they’re not “natural” so i will just deal with the few extra calories and f--- the “chemicals of death companies”! although i’m sure they’ll get us all one way or another, you can beat on that!

Raw sugar tastes like s---. Real sugar is just sugar. What the hell is wrong with real s---!

      TED Reply:

If by “Real” sugar you mean white sugar it is HIGHLY refined using chemicals like supher dioxide. The “raw” sugar is the unrefined state which is much more natural than the refined white sugar. So the more “real” product is the raw sugar.

      jeff Reply:

Use Stevia, 100times sweeter than sugar which means you use less, all natural.

      TED Reply:

The problem is that stevia tastes HORRIBLE! I’ve tried several different brands and they are all just aweful.

      criss Reply:

Yeah mysty you’re where I was 2 years ago with splenda and 15 years ago with nutrasweet. Been on stevia and a little honey (raw) for a while now. But the real BIG bad boys are the freeking GMOs that they do not disclose, so I spend an awful lot of time trying to figure out what is good enough to eat. I’m lucky that for the most part my family is on board.

      Dave Reply:

This really pisses me off too! What in the hell are those of us on diets supposed to do? Sugar and corn syrup make you fat and diabetic, saccharin tastes nasty, aspartame screws you in all kinds of different ways, now Splenda is bad. How in the hell am I supposed to lose any weight when everything I drink outside of spring water (the only kind I drink) or unsweetened tea does something to kill me? I need a little variety in what I’m drinking. How safe are those Jones sodas? I guess I’ll have to take my chances with real sugar.

I do wonder- how much Splenda did they give these test animals? I’ll never forget the saccharin scare when I was a kid. These scientists pumped these test rats full of saccharin equivalent to drinking 800 cans of Tab a day- that’s right, EIGHT HUNDRED!- and then gleefully announced that saccharin caused cancer. I did the math. That’s like if you wake up for 16 hours a day and drink a can of Tab every minute nonstop all day long. If you did that somehow, I’d think cancer would be among the least of your troubles. I’d like to know just how much Splenda was given to these animals that caused these problems.

      Aspartame Reply:

They said aspartame was safe too. They said you had to drink 12 cases a day for 6 months to be exposed to enough to grow tumors. Now they admit you’re only safe drinking one can a day. Guess who was on the board of directors for that company when the approval was pushed through.

      Darth Chaos Reply:

Donald Rumsfeld, and he was on the board of G.D. Searle which is now owned by Monsanto.

      reptillian Reply:

just use honey its the all natural real sweetener. but raw sugar is good too.

    5. Rusty S Says:

Cut out sodium and you will lose much much more weight…in addition to cutting out diet sodas and such

Sodium (salts) retains unnecessary excess water in your body

    6. We-are-the-future Says:

I wish people would wake up and realize that so much of the food and beverages we consume every day contains at least one added ingredient that is harmful to our health. Then there are sweeteners. Splenda… “tastes like sugar because it’s made from sugar” (I think that was the slogan)… Well I got news for you… it’s not made from sugar, nor has it ever been. It’s made up mostly of chemicals. Artificial sweeteners are everywhere. Diet drinks like diet coke and even those flavored mineral water drinks contain aspartame, so does most gum now.

Aspartame has been shown to lead to neurological sicknesses like alzheimer’s. It has also been shown to turn into formaldehyde if exposed to high temperatures… like in your body… and people still get fooled into thinking that it’s good for them and they can implement it into their diets to help keep off the pounds and stay healthy.

People are so gullible and passive nowadays that they will believe anything and even if they didn’t, they wouldn’t even act on it. Must be the fluoride in the drinking water dumbing them down. I also noticed that most major brands of deodorant contain aluminum… not sure why you would need to put aluminum on your body but I’m pretty sure that it’s not good for you. You can get aluminum free deodorant at health stores so I’m pretty sure aluminum isn’t good.

I don’t have all the answers it seems, but I still like to educate myself on this s--- that we put into (or onto) our bodies everyday that is supposedly “beneficial” to our health that we are finding out more and more is a lie.

Anyway, sorry for the huge rant…I’ll close by saying this; There are a few people like us…the people that read and post on this site, that are wise to what is going on and maybe we are the only ones that stand a chance to what is coming. Regardless, we must inform as many people as we can and we must unite against the coming darkness and be warriors of the light! The New World Order is coming. The Fourth Reich. The changes have long since begun.

P.S. I know some people will defend products like splenda and nutri-sweet and the like, but let’s face it. The truth is out. The only way to stay healthy is through NATURAL means, not artificial. No chemicals, no preservatives, no genetic modification mumbo-jumbo…NONE of that. Anyone with a sane mind would agree.

      TED Reply:

Aspertame also turns into methyl alcohol (wood alcohol) in the bloodstream. (Methyl alcohol causes blindness and death.) It is a neurotoxin meaning toxic to the brain. One of the known side effects listed with the FDA is that it can cause seizures. Alarmingly it is added to several of the anti-seizure drugs!

It is not my intention to defend any of the artificial sugars but I believe that splenda is made by replacing 2 of the molecules of sugar with 2 molecules of chlorine. So it is “partly” made from sugar. This does not mean it is good. I think it is less harmful than aspertame (which again does not mean it is good). Some people have allergic reactions to splenda.

One option sweetening is date sugar. It is a natural product made from dates. They are dried and then ground up so it is made only from dates. It’s good for baking and stuff where it can be mixed in but it does not dissolve so it’s not good for sweetening liquids like tea. It’s a little hard to find but maybe will become more available if more people start using it.

      TED Reply:

The problem with honey is that it is highly refined by the bees (almost as much as white sugar is refined by humans). It causes a spike in blood sugar similar to refined white sugar. For people with blood sugar issues (hypoglycemia, diabetes, etc.) it can’t be used as a substitute for sugar. For those people it must be used very carefully and sparingly.

One other thing. For people who don’t want to use this poison artificial sweetener, but are still concerned about using real sugar as well, you might want to look up an all natural sweetener called Stevia. Most health stores carry it. I tried it once in my coffee…it was ok but the aftertaste was kinda like black licorice. You could also try brown sugar in your coffee instead of white. At least there’s no bleach in it and it tastes great!

    10. GivemeAgave Says:

The most healthy all natural sweetener is by far Agave Nectar….you can get it at any health food store….its a bit more expensive than honey but much easier for your body to process….and it tastes great….stevia is good too…but dont use too much or it tastes horrible

We used Splenda for a few years. Then I said to my spouse one day “they say it’s made from sugar but has no calories”. “What are they doing to it to make it that way”? So we stopped using it about 8-9 months ago. We went back to plain old sugar. If you can use real sugar and don’t have health issues because of it, use the real thing. Just use it very moderately.

    12. Mayonaise Soup Says:

What about Stevia? Isn’t it derived from a plant or something??

The best Stevia product I have found is at Trader Joe’s. No aftertaste and you can use it in anything. It is a natural product. Stevia is a plant from somewhere in Africa. It does not make you gain weight. As for sugar, at least it doesn’t cause cancer or all the other crap that aspartame, splenda, etc. do. Diet soft drinks are poison, but so are all soft drinks.

    14. brett jackson Says:

why are you using any sugar at all…the people who harvest the crop are on less than one dollar a day.

after thet i got horribly sick not chicken pox but sick well from the vitamins after that i developed diabetes type 1 …..for years i used products containing artificial sweetners of one sort or another
i have taken aspartame for 15 years or so…. in turn i stoped several months ago and to all that i hold true i have grown in my mind , greater and more vigorous things. also if you care to conside with me spiritually more perceptive….splenda i tried only a few times every time i noticed after ingesting the
product brain swelling abnormal bowel behavior and nerve shock in all senses…..if it helps as a diabetic though i sounds taboo to the status q= regular sugar not high fructose corn syrup but regular sugar is better in all ways to artificial sweetners….or look at it this way anything that rumsfeld would push to be passed on the mass public must be dangerous….my father use to always say in your personal life and in turn to the greater social network everything is good in moderation that is true….but murderation and moderation are different things…..
and remember self governance is best from the individual to the local community or as wisemen
would say what is good for one man is not good for the next so in turn I DON’T LIKE THE CONCEPT OF EUGENICS …..and past the flesh vessel that our bodies are it is the way that is corupt in this world not the vessels……the vessel is just the transport for the act, more valid proof that higher power runs things, just as evil is AS evil does so is justice and equality achieved first by self governance then by teaching and learning thereby
defeating centralized power and all parasitic ways from the human spirit (or as you would a chain)
fight down tyranny…death to the new world order….we shall live again…..the rule of justice will prevail….self governance ,self reliance, self analysis, self love is best then you can face the world in truth cause you know what you are fighting and defending for……truth and justice, and in the end when we do our part in this struggle aren’t we then doing our for the bigger scheme of things good luck and god bless every good way and man in the struggle…..

    17. ERS Says:

Molasses are good; so is honey. Sugar is also better than these poisons. To some extent there is truth to the statement that Splenda is made from sugar. It is. Sugar is composed of Oxygen, Hydrogen and Carbon; that’s why if you heat sugar (in a test tube, for example) you get a cloud of vapor and are left with a brown glop that has a burnt smell – that’s the Carbon left behind. I remember that from my chemistry classes. Splenda is made by altering the molecular structure of sugar by stuffing a Chlorine atom into the mix in lieu of Carbon.
Is it really true that Stevia was approved by the Feds as a sweetener? Sure hope so.

      We are the future Reply:

I can’t really answer your question because I really don’t know, but what I can tell you is that Aspartame and Splenda were approved by the feds as a sweetener and they have been proven to be hazardous to your health so don’t always believe in what they say. The feds are only interested in population control as far as food products and vaccines are concerned, so don’t rely on their word for such things. The best advice I can give you is to do some research on these products and come to your own conclusions. I for one know that stevia is 100% natural and completely safe. There is only one catch…I don’t know if all health stores do this but at least the one I got the stevia from, the woman working there told me that it isn’t recommended for pregnant women to ingest it (my fiance was pregnant at the time) I think that’s a bunch of bull from the government trying to scare people into not using natural products and continue using their poison but nonetheless my fiance didn’t use it anyway just in case. Maybe it’s not like that in the States but at least here in Canada it is. Thanks for the info on splenda by the way. I was always curious as to exactly how it was made.

People are simply too obsessed with sugar and salt in their cooking. There are many spices better than salt and many ways of sweetening better than sugar. Fruit juice, honey, things like that… sugar is a very simple tasting sweetener IMO, other natural sweeteners have a much more complex taste.

      Carla H Reply:

I am sorry, but if you want to make any kind of a bread at home and you want it to turn out you need a little salt and a little sugar. I have tried other things and I just ended up wasting ingredients because no one wanted to eat it.

Our tastes are formed in babyhood and most Americans were pretty much raised on salt and sugar, but hey animals love salt and suger too, even WILD animals go beserk when they get some sugar….so maybe it is something we need, in moderation of course.

    20. ron shuman Says:

wow…sounds like you guys need to do some research,on stevia….yes its atleast 300 times sweater than sugar, you can grow your own,I got mine at home depot..but its like pot some isnt as strong,as others. you can make tea out of the leaves….has alot of medicinel purposes, its not from africa….its from south america, the indians there have been using it for over 1000 years…no recorded illneses, side affects ,or deaths . you can bake with it ..not like aspertane that breaks down, into a toxic mess when heated. theres really so much this has going for it..and yes it was illegal for a while and then it was legal, but couldnt be sold as a sweetener, but as a supplement…now it can be sold as a sweetener….as for aspertanene…the reason it was so widely used is donald rumsfeild worked for the company that owned the patent…so I guess you can fiqure the rest out…we need to boycott all those artificial sweeters in products…theyve been poisning us for years…sorry cant spell worth a crap…but the message is good…

Yes, I’ve heard of that. I found a huge 500 page document on aspartame on the web once but I only got to read the first 20 pages or so and then my computer crashed and I lost everything. But I remember reading about Rumsfeld’s involvement and insistence that aspartame be allowed on the market for public consumption despite all the known health hazards and that it’s in the pentagon’s files as a key ingredient for chemical warfare or some type of chemical weapon or something. The deeper you dig, the scarier the facts are that are revealed it seems…

You can build a f---ing house out of it (the cane part I think).. or some cool diarama of a fake igloo or you can just lick it because it tastes like SUGAR! It’s called SUGAR. No need to eat it all day.. but if you happen to want some sugar.. I’d recommend SUGAR. You can lure horses to your fence with sugar and pet them. Bugs like sugar and if you need some protein one day and there aren’t any chickens around and you have some SUGAR.. bugs will come and eat it and then you can eat the bugs and get protein. Why cant people just have some sugar and feel satisfied like they ate sugar because they actually DID eat SUGAR!!!! I guess if I put sugar inside of amonia it might taste like sugar but I could still clean my windows but it isn’t sugar you asshole. Just eat sugar.. it’s ok. You might consider taking a break from your profanity filled rants so that you can read up a bit on the subject. Sugar does not grow out of the ground. Sugar CANE grows out of the ground. In order to get “real” refined white sugar the sugar cane goes through an extensive refining process. The refining process exposes it to many harsh chemicals like sulpher dioxide. It is not “natural”. Stevia is a natural plant. Some of the stevia you can buy is simply dried leaves of the plant which is still natural. The white powder form obviously goes through some kind of refining process. I don’t know if that process uses harsh chemicals. (The problem with stevia is not that it is a chemical. The problem is that it tastes terrible.)

Actually, the FDA only approved a proprietary, patented, isolated chemical derived from stevia as a sweetener (for the new Pepsi). It may be just as bad as the other soft-kill bio-weapon artificial sweeteners mentioned above.

Also, blue agave syrup is a health scam! It is made by using industrial-grade solvents on the starch of the plant to produce an engineered molecule that does not occur in nature. This is the blue agave plant equivalent of high fructose corn syrup. The intestine does not know how to metabolize it so it must be processed in the liver and then gets stored as fat, resulting in obesity and type II diabetes just like HFCS.

BTW, ever notice how almost ALL the prepackaged, preprocessed foods marketed at our children (such as Lunchables) contain Sucralose AND high fructose corn syrup??? WTF!?!

(not to mention the toxic GMO corn, toxic GMO soy bi-products (soybean oil, isolated soy protein, lecithin, etc.), Neurotoxic flavor-enhancer MSG labelled as autolized yeast extract, hydrolized protein, spice, natural flavor, flavors, etc. etc, etc.)

Methinks the FDA is the wolf guarding the henhouse!!!

Another misconception is the safety of chlorine. People assume chlorine is safe to drink because chlorine is used to disinfect tap water. But the research shows that chlorine in tap water is a carcinogen. That’s why most people are now drinking bottled water and/or putting filters on their faucet taps. Chlorine causes cancer. Splenda is 3/4-chlorine.

Another misconception: to successfully replace the sugar with chlorine in the lab, the manufacturers use chemicals such as benzene, lithium chloride, formaldehyde, and acetone to force the chlorine into the molecule. Splenda is technically a chemical soup!”"”

      Carla H Reply:

Yes, chlorine is a big problem but drinking it is not half as bad as showering in it which creates a fine mist that goes right into your LUNGS. Ever wonder why some people get lung cancer but never smoked?

Get a filter on the shower ASAP! It’s the single most important thing you can do to safeguard your health. Take a bath and avoid the mist/vapor until you can get a filter on the shower head. A little common sense can save your life!

It was my understanding that, in the simplest possible equation, sugar is reacted with chlorine to produce sucralose and dioxin.

Plain old unrefined sugar and beet sugar (made from sugar beets) (both products of the USA) are not all that bad for you unless you eat just that and nothing else. A little common sense can go a long, long way.

What makes me angry is when I see these idiot women giving artificial sweetners to their kids. Just say NO to soda everyday. Be brave enough to be a parent and don’t worry if your kids don’t like you ever second of the day.

BTW- I have been killing ants with diet coke for about the last ten years now. In fact it works so well that the ants do not even come back again for a couple of years….it really makes you wonder about what people are putting in their bodies and then everyone is supposed to feel sorry for them when they get cancer. Of course some cancer is unavoidable, but most cancer is the result of pure stupidity.

The P-gp effect could result in medications used in chemotherapy, AIDS treatment and treatments for heart conditions being shunted back into the intestines, rather than being absorbed by the body.

      Probably a good thing!

My mother began forcing this stuff down my throat when I was 9 years old and first diagnosed with diabetes. Well, I don’t know if it was Splenda back then… I think it was another one of the artificial sweetners, but anyway, you get the picture. It was pretty bad.

I had severe memory loss at 15 years old, fungal infection that still lingers, etc.

This is some bad, bad, bad stuff, let me tell you. And if you get your body off it for a year or so, then you can TASTE this s---, even if it’s not on the ingredients list. I was over at my grandmother-in-law’s and ate a piece of cake she’d made, and got violently ill, later found out she’d used Splenda to make the cake. Go figure.
