New York to fight terrorism with more street-corner cameras

Office workers and tourists – and possible terrorists – will have cameras watching their every move as they visit Macy’s, shop for diamonds at Tiffany & Co., or gawk in Times Square. The apparatus, paid for by some $24 million in Department of Homeland Security funding, will expand a similar effort already underway in lower Manhattan where cameras focus on the Federal Reserve, the New York Stock Exchange, and the Brooklyn Bridge.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg, announcing the program Sunday, said the goal is to detect terrorism threats and deter pre-operational surveillance. Sensors will try to detect chemical, biological, and radiological threats.
But some terrorism experts have questioned whether a camera network will deter terrorists. They also say that sensors are known to give off “false positives.”

the towns are next..our little rural state has already installed cameras at the state lines on the interstates….our neighboring state did likewise…with monkeys on the internet willing to sign on as volunteer monitors(prob the trolls that hang out here will be in the front lines of that one)and the “day of the camera” will soon be everywhere

Studies ave been published which suggest that for crime, more street lighting is whats needed in the majority of towns and cities in the UK. We have rising crimes all the time here in Scotland, especially violent and kife crime, yet about 10% of ALL CCTV in the world is lcated here, with your image being recorded more than 300 times in a day. CCTV has never stopped a crime taking place, otherwise the cops wouldn’t have to keep looking through CCTV tapes, they are only good for something after the fact. Street lights will be a prevention, either that or bring back the local bobby on the beat, instead of the thugs we have in iniform in Strathclyde Police Force
BTW, By law ANYONE who has recorded your image, HAS toprovide you a copy under the Data Protection Act 1998, if everyone who was recorded demanded copies from all the shops, parks, schools colleges, hospitals, towns villages and cities etc, then there would be too much demand and the cameras wouldn’t be cost effective then. Hit them in the pockets and they will soon stop.

If New Yorkers were far sighted then I am certain that serious rioting would now be taking place in the 5 boroughs. The control state of CCTV is the government stating that they have zero respect for the rights of individuals. The UK is a prime example of a failed state with CCTV absolutely everywhere. The beaureaucy that has grown around this is horrendous with an ever expanding government creating more jobs for its client base. A state of paranoia now exists in the UK that the New Yorkers would be wise to study as it is horrendous.
We do not have a constitution here in the UK but you do in the USA. Make use of it and hold the real terrorists to account firstly by getting rid of Bloomberg and anyone else who thinks that your liberty is negotiable.

well, I guess it’s time for someone to make a website or Iphone or google phone application that has everyone participating in locating where EVERY single camera is located and attach a picture of it.
So the app on your phone could just let you know whenever there is a camera near…
So we can locate ALL cameras, and eventually SMASH THEM ALL…..

The “left” didn’t kill it. It’s still there and still going and, if anything, there are now more people, including soldiers, who are awake to what is going on. Here in Michigan, because the only money coming in comes from the feds, everywhere you see new road repairs and construction, you see new cameras on all four corners.

In all honesty such a system is not an infringement on your rights or privacy.
1. Public places (streets, sidewalks, city parks, airports, government buildings) are not private homes.
2. If a business decides to have cameras or security survalliance systems it is their choice, just like it is your choice to do business with them.
3. If a private home decides to have cameras or security systems it is the home owners choice as well.
I invision a US where every nieghborhood, every town, every city, every metropolitan area will have such systems in public monitored 24 hours a day. In addition every major city should be given at least one Unmanned Aerial Vehicle for Survalliance, and at least 3 LRAD’s for crowd control. Police Forces should be increased by at least 10% everywhere. And citizens should be required by law to be able to identify themselves at any times. Crimes you commit from the lesser to the greater should imply how much extra restriction and or monitoring you should recieve.

you must live in a very dark and gloomy office where you dont get to see much of the outside world ‘war on the infowar,’ here in england i literally cant even buy a loaf of bread without having my privacy invaded. The parks are even camera ridden and regularly get patrolled by cops in panda cars, who insist on asking me what i’m doing, where i’m going, where i live even though im just walking my dog. They have also stepped up their game fining people for making genuine mistakes and even driving at 32mph in a 30mph zone!!! £60 fine and 3 points on your license. Its all just extra revenue to fund the police state which you seem to approve of! You need to wake up and realise that you have had your head so far up the states ass that you’ve forgotten about what its all about. Go get chipped and go take you and your kids to McDonalds, maybe watch some tv too. i’ve heard that extra flouride in your water is good for you also so perhaps you should try that with your happy meal! then after that you can maybe put on your kevlar vest and shiny boots and badge before you go beat some random innocent protesters. come to england pal you would fit right in. Indeed security would need to be paid for. So it is only normal that the tax payer will pay some of the money, and those who are criminals should pay extra so their crime hurts. Yes even if all they did was drive 32mph in a 30mph zone.
And while a chip is an ingenious idea you have, I think we are still decades off from it actually being implemented. Biometric databases on the other hand are another great invention, and have already been implemented in dealing with terrorists and insurgents in Iraq. If we in the US and other countries should also implement it for all citizens to aid in positive identification.
