NORAD holds hijacking drill with U.S., Russia and Canadian military

Military from the U.S., Canada and Russia just completed joint training exercises for responding to hijacking scenarios similar to the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The training exercise was led by the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), the same organization that two years before the 9/11 attacks conducted drills to simulate hijacked airliners crashing into the World Trade Center. Another NORAD simulation used the Pentagon as a target.

Dubbed Vigilant Eagle 12, the computer-based training drill took place at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado and ended Wednesday. Organizers characterized the exercise as a way to increase cooperation and communication between the U.S., Canadian and Russian military forces if an aircraft hijacked by terrorists moved between U.S. and Russian airspace.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) also recently held a drill in Tampa that brought together special military forces from 96 countries. The event was hailed as a way to build global partnerships. Spectators were seen taking pictures and cheering on giant black helicopters participating during the waterfront drill. Maybe the public wouldn’t be so gleeful if it knew international troops are named in United Nations’ documents as the authorities to confiscate guns from Americans under international treaty agreements.
