Some commentators have referred to an Obama Doctrine in his recent West Point speech. In their view, it’s a middle path between isolationism and knee-jerk military interventions. The real Obama Doctrine in this and other speeches of his is that it shall be the unilateral policy of the U.S. government to rule the world, at least insofar as providing it with enforcement in instances of flouting international rules, building nuclear arms, terrorism by biological means and genocide. This vision is even broader than the war on terror.
At West Point, he rationalized the Obama Doctrine. He spelled out his reason for thinking that unilateral American interventions are always justifiable. It’s that he is Batman and Americans comprise the Master Nation. He, Obama as President, personifies the fact that Americans have the will to act. He said “I believe in American exceptionalism with every fiber of my being. But what makes us exceptional is not our ability to flout international norms and the rule of law; it is our willingness to affirm them through our actions.”
In the movie “Batman Begins” (2005), Batman is instructed “The training is nothing! The will is everything! The will to act!” Obama believes himself to be Batman.
Obama is telling us that Americans are the Master Nation because of its will to act, and this unique position justifies its interventions. This is the groundwork of the real Obama Doctrine.
