White House adviser David Axelrod said the administration wouldn’t rule out taxing some employees’ benefits to fund a health care agenda that has yet to take final form. The move would be a compromise with fellow Democrats, who are pushing the proposal as a way to pay for the massive undertaking without ballooning the federal deficit.
“There are a number of formulations and we’ll wait and see. The important thing at this point is to keep the process moving, to keep people at the table, to the keep the discussions going,” Axelrod said. “We’ve gotten a long way down the road and we want to finish that journey.”

This is just a theory, but I’d bet the lack of affordable medical insurance for people is due to the insurance lobby. They have a statistical lock on a certain set of data. They can’t lose.
The big companies don’t want ordinary people to have insurance either, or many would quit their jobs and become independent. A lot of people work for Home Depot etc. for the medical benefits alone.
Once you get to, say, 55, no insurance company will insure you as an independent for less than the state risk pool. How does $1200/month + as an individual for an 80/20 plan sound to you?
Of course, I’m assuming here that you are not a pauper. One of the greatest causes of personal bankruptcy is a huge, unexpected medical bill. But if you have nothing, there are ways to get the taxpayers to foot the bill, thereby encouraging poverty and assuring dependency.
