Obama Puts Off Gitmo Closure Until After 2011

Yes We Can… be exactly like the Bush administration. In another glaring example of the near seamless transition between the Bush and Obama administrations, The New York Times is reporting Obama may not close the Gitmo torture concentration camp until after 2011, maybe later.

	Most of the captives at Gitmo are harmless farmers and goat herders kidnapped for bounties in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

“The New York Times newspaper says the Obama administration may not be able to close the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and transfer terrorism suspects held there until 2011 at the earliest,” reports The Voice of America, the government’s premier propaganda outfit (it was part of the Office of War Information and then the State Department).

So what is the excuse? Well, it is said the White House approached lawmakers on the U.S. House of Representatives Appropriations Committee several weeks ago about adding $200 million to a 2010 military spending bill to acquire an under-utilized state prison in Illinois to house up to 100 Guantanamo detainees but Democratic leaders refused, due to the project’s controversial nature.

In other words, the Dems don’t want to be seen transferring so-called terrorists into the heartland, especially with elections right around the corner.

Of course, this is a joke. Most of the “terrorists” held illegally at Camp Gitmo are victims of bounty hunters in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The Pentagon handed out bags of cash to Afghan tribal warlords and instructed them to kidnap al-Qaeda and Taliban terrorists and hand them over for rendition and waterboarding. As it turns out, most of these supposed terrorists were farmers and goat herders that had nothing to do with Osama bin Laden or Mullah Omar.

[efoods]Many of the captives are Arabs. Beginning in the 1980s, the CIA, Pakistan’s ISI, and Saudi Arabia recruited thousands of Arabs to fight the Great Satan, the Soviet Union, in Afghanistan.

On December 17, Ohio Republican John Boehner said two pieces of legislation would have to go through Congress before the U.S. government can move any of the detainees to the Illinois prison. He doubted either would pass.

“I am not going to support a bill that facilitates bringing Gitmo prisoners to the United States,” said Boehner.

Republicans like to pretend moving the shanghaied farmers and sheep herders to Illinois poses a threat to the national security of the United States. The assumption is they will escape the maximum security prison and commit terrorist acts inside the United States.

If you believe a handful of dirt farmers and a few mentally deranged CIA patsies who think they have pledged allegiance to the dead Osama bin Laden pose a threat to the nation, I have a bridge for sale in Brooklyn you might be interested in buying.
