Obama to water down ‘Buy American’ plan after EU trade war threat

The European Union warned the US yesterday against plunging the world into depression by adopting a planned “Buy American” policy, intensifying fears of a trade war.

The EU threatened to retaliate if the US Congress went ahead with sweeping measures in its $800 billion (£554 billion) stimulus plan to restrict spending to American goods and services.
Gordon Brown was caught in the crossfire as John Bruton, the EU Ambassador to Washington, said that “history has shown us” where the closing of markets leads — a clear reference to the Depression of the 1930s, triggered by US protectionist laws.
Last night Mr Obama gave a strong signal that he would remove the most provocative passages from the Bill.
“I agree that we can’t send a protectionist message,” he said in an interview with Fox TV. “I want to see what kind of language we can work on this issue. I think it would be a mistake, though, at a time when worldwide trade is declining, for us to start sending a message that somehow we’re just looking after ourselves and not concerned with world trade.”

This is total crap. Globalism got us into this mess in the first place. This country is run as if it were a multinational. We are it’s slave labor. The government should only buy American, it’s the American slaves money anyhow. All governernments…local and up should have this policy. This would not protect us from inflation…though it would slow the shrinking pie that US civilians have of the Federal Reserve Notes.

Good points. I dont see why my hard earned tax money that is suppose to stimulate the US economy should be used to help Global oligarchies. They want to throw some money in on the mix then they can cry. We have to stop this, everyone in the world making a dime off the backs of the hardest working people in the world. Not My Debt.

At least Obama made a stance with saying “we will buy american”
Of course he had to back track due to international pressure but there is some positive in this.
Now if he will move on and address NAFTA I will be very shocked / overwhelmed with some what curiosity of this character.
I’m still skeptical but I’m willing to listen.

I don’t give a damn what country it comes from……an import is an import. I don’t just “buy american” even though I live in the U.S. I’m not gonna buy stuff just because they got it for sell. This is why I keep saying that the whole U.S.consumer base of 300 million people(5% of mankind) has been “flooded” with everything known to man. Let me give 1 example in order to understand me. According to the U.S. Dept of Transportation, there’re 230 million automobiles under ownership,with license plates, out of a total population of 300 million people. In the mid-90’s Mainland China had 1 vehicle for every 638 people……this the reason why China’s auto sales have grown 49% year-over-year since then. This is what I’ve been talking about with regard to “market-penetration”. With China’s population of 1.3 billion people let them spend money. Fuck the world of advertisment.

so many countries put large tariffs on american made goods, but we don’t do the same.
we should match anything they do to thwart our products going to their country, with like measures of their products coming into ours…

The Post Offices soon will announce that they will be open only 1 or 2 days out of the work week and delivery out in rural aras may only be done 1 day…. a week.
WHY? Because of Gas prices and Budget deficits.
