The White House is considering at least two troop withdrawal options as it weighs a new Iraq strategy — one that would preserve President Barack Obama’s campaign pledge to get all combat brigades out within 16 months and a second that would stretch it to 23 months, two officials said Friday.
A third, in-between option of 19 months is also being weighed, according to the officials, neither of whom would discuss the sensitive topic without being granted anonymity. One of the officials said the main focus appears to be on the 16-month and 23-month options; 23 months would run to the end of 2010.
Under either timeline, the U.S. would hope to leave behind a number of brigades that would be redesigned and reconfigured as multipurpose units to provide training and advising for Iraqi security forces, one official said. These brigades would be considered noncombat outfits and their presence would have to be agreed in advance by the Iraqi government, which under a deal signed late last year insisted that all U.S. forces — not just combat brigades — be out of Iraq by the end of 2011.
Obama has said his Iraq policy will include leaving a residual U.S. military force of unspecified composition and size in Iraq and in the region to conduct counter-terrorism missions against al-Qaida in Iraq and to protect American diplomatic and civilian personnel. He has said they will not build permanent bases in Iraq but will continue training and supporting Iraqi security forces “as long as Iraqi leaders move toward political reconciliation and away from sectarianism.”
The concept of the stay-behind training and advising brigades has been well developed, the official said, although the details such as their size and makeup are in an early stage of being sorted out.
At the White House’s request, top military officials recently offered an assessment of the risks associated with the 16-, 19- and 23-month withdrawal timetables, without saying which is preferred. Obama’s top two defense advisers, Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Joint Chiefs Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen, have not yet provided a formal recommendation to the president on a timetable, an official said.

Because of the unemployment situation back in the USA, government has to keep the troops busy.

No, not because of economic situation it is a much darker and scarier reality. Most of the troops in Irak and Afghanistan are those who have responded no to shooting on Americans if ordered to. You really have to see the troops in iraq as a spectacular case of deportation passed as the Iraq security bed-time story. It is intended for these troops to never return; the American people and the troops themselves will continue to be showered with reasons to perpetually postpone the return. If an offensive on Pakistan or Iran is carried out, it is these same troops who are stationed now in Iraq and Afghanistan that will be mobilized.
Warn the troops.

I forgot to mention that the other implied reason why the troops will not be brought home is because they will join and protect the American people against attack from those who said twill fire on the troops as wel as from the foreign troops now stationed in the US.

We need change! What change! It would only take about 1 week to get the troops out and mabe 1 month to gather all the equipment.
Obama is fraud, by the time the withdraw comes, they will think of anther excuse to remain there.

NO, NO, NO! Didn’t you pay any attention during the campaign? 6 months, that’s all, just 6 months and the boys will be out of Iran, or is it Pakistan. It’s one of those countries over there. And our military doesn’t just leave guys behind. Besides, if they ALL came home what would they all DO?

If they returned all the soldiers back home,EVERYBODY will see what’s really wrong with the guys…they are all sick with DU…they will come back to tell you how wrong this war is really about, that’s why the govt puts in a stop loss to keep them overseas. The govt obviously knows it’s time is up,they can’t keep the guys over there forever.

We are building the biggest embassy in the world in Iraq. Really think we are leaving anytime soon?
February 9th, 2009 at 12:47 pm
As I sit here typing this I ask myself, “How long will it be before we all say, I’ve had enough?”
Just how many news clips will it take, how many dead bodies must be seen before our humanity kicks in and we all say “the responsibility is mine!”
How many points need to be made and how arguments won? We are all searching for answers and few searching for solutions. Many times I see and hear actions from people that would seem to indicate that “they” have already won. There’s a hopelessness in our speech that can no longer be ignored. There’s a feeling that there isn’t anything we can do about it anyway. So many lost souls, when will we realize the truth?
We have allowed ourselves to be trampled on with blind faith that our “leaders” will guide and protect us. We have been sheeple for far too long. Ask yourself, right here and now, what is stronger, Love or hate? Deception or truth? Good or evil? I believe with such certainty that the majority of us know the answers that will shape this revolution into the most powerful, incredible and most beautiful sight this world has ever seen.
I for one believe that GOOD is supposed to TRIUMPH over evil. I am not the minority with this thought. A people united can NEVER fall. Generations before us have fought to preserve our freedom. IT IS NOW OUR TURN. Do we have the character? Do we have the compassion for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? I believe we do, I just hope we can see it before our countries become wastelands in the hands of pure evil.
As I communicate with others, and see and hear others communicate as well, what I have experienced is so much energy focused on what we don’t want and what we hope will not happen, instead of focusing on the bright future we have ahead of us.
What is Love without action? Useless!
What is Faith without action? Useless!
What is Hope without action? Useless!
What are We without action? DEAD!
If we can realize these simple truths and face fear square in the eye and overcome it, then and only then will we begin to see the peaceful world we have all envisioned for generations to come.
I will stand with you until we have declared victory over the New World Order, Will you stand with me?

Nope. not leaving Iraq. Going to send more troops to Afghanistan to hunt a ghost and further more, invade Pakistan, supposedly in hunt of that ghost. So sad, after about 3 weeks of Obama my sister still believes he is a saviour and his message is “uplifting”. I wonder, if she hasn’t been paying attention these last few days while Obama has been spinning doom and gloom about the U.S. What a great leader he is! NOT.
