County sheriffs issued more than 63,000 new concealed carry licenses through the first six months of this year, nearly surpassing the number of new permits issued in all of 2012.
Sheriffs’ offices issued 32,074 new licenses and 15,958 renewal licenses between April 1 and June 30, according to Ohio Attorney General’s Office numbers released Thursday. That brings the number of new licenses issued this year to 63,481 — an 81 percent increase from the first half of 2012 and just shy of the 64,650 new permits for all of 2012.
In Marion County, the sheriff’s office issued 554 licenses in the first half of 2013, a 128.9 percent increase from the first six months of 2012, according to Ohio Attorney General’s Office statistics. The number issued thus far has surpassed last year’s total of 446 new licenses.
