Good Lord. This “War on Terror” nonsense has got to stop. We start out with a regional war in the Middle East–thinking, of course, that we are fighting a very specific terrorism network–and now we appear to be fighting all forms of terror everywhere. Last I checked terrorism meant the “use of violence and threats to intimidate or coerce, esp. for political purposes.” These days, however–I’m thinking specifically about that 12 year old kid being labeled as a terrorist and looking at juvie because he had a cap gun–the term has gotten muddled to the point where it now means “committing actions that cause people to be fearful.” This seems to be a classic example of language manipulation for political purposes–change the meaning to the point that it could apply to anybody so that, if you AREN’T imprisoned or made a pariah, its only because you’re lucky, not because you don’t deserve it.
I also find the pure sensationalism of this incident to be disgusting. Granted, it involves a public shooting that was apparently fueled by anti-semitism, but I find it interesting that the death of just one person is enough to cause a justification for why we need to create even more of a police state… why we need to be more and more fearful of our fellow citizens and neighbors… why we need to crack down on people because of their ideologies (because, of course, ideas make them dangerous). This really makes little more sense than if the DHS went on a campaign to police people’s showering habits because of the overwhelming death toll caused by slipping on soap. Better yet, how about we go after soap manufacturers and call them a terrorist network… “Its okay, America, you no longer need to live in fear of soapy death… we’ve made it illegal for you to wash.” Complete, utter bullshit.
