DCI Neville said officers need to improve their results to make captured images count against criminals.
He said there are more than a million CCTV cameras in London and the Government has spent £500 million on the crime-fighting equipment.
But he admitted just 1,000 crimes were solved in 2008 using CCTV images as officers fail to make the most of potentially vital evidence.
Writing in an internal report, Mr Neville said people are filmed many times every day and have high expectations when they become victims of crime.

So it turns out that the cameras are not recording and videos are sent to a control centre showing up to 500 different cameras at the same time and are manned by one or two untrained council workers. I guess they are not being put up to make us safe after all.
However there is one snoop order for every 17 people in the uk issued each year, you can be fined for putting your bins out on the wrong day or your dog fouling the park and they have no problem finding photo evidence of this

I work in the CCTV business, there are crimes that happen all the time and the criminals are caught because of the video. Putting cameras in a home however is absurd and will never happen. DOWN WITH THE NWO, 911 was an inside job

Most will complain about cameras until they are used to defend something on their own behalf. Cameras have proven to record incidences where people are proven innocent when wrongfully identified by a blind and stupid observer. I’m not completely against the public camera debate.

I’m not saying that CCTV is a bad idea. More to the point, OPEN CIRCUIT PUBLIC CAMERAS fed into centralised security systems COULD be a HUGE THREAT to our privacy. COULD clog our jails up due to increase effeciency (I’m not saying robbers, vandals & attackers should not be punished) but some laws are highly dubious (ie. drug laws, minor traffic offenses when no danger was present – 80mph on a very quiet strech of motorway etc., underage drinking..).
Anti-social behaviour is not ALWAYS a problem… Political protests SHOULD be a right (as we can’t vote on issues, legislation or how OUR OWN tax contributions should be spent – page on the back of the income tax form…)
The infrastructure COULD be abused by a TOTALITARIAN STATE. The gov. keep pushing the limits in this respect… A difficult debate. I know all this is OBVIOUS (pun intended). Centralised security is also POTENTIALLY and often ACTUALLY the biggest SECURITY HOLE our country FACES!!!

In Oakland, Ca., they have private security walking the streets. YES! Walking the streets. They wear orange or blue uniforms. They look like a cross between park service employees and Bike Cops.
Since Oakland police force is in shambles, the local businesses have all pitched in and pay the private security force themselves. It is weird to see it. It reminds me of what Obamas’ Citizens on Patrol would look like.
As a local, I actually like it, ‘cuz it does create a safer atmosphere and there is less police presence. Citizens and businesses when left to their own resorces, can do a fine job policing themselves if it means less government involvement and a safer and friendlier environment. Sometimes a police presence can deter business as much as a gang presence.

The PUBLIC cameras are mostly effective at petty TAX/FINE COLLECTION & occasionally (mostly ineffectively) vandalism prevention. I do think they work as a mild deterent to PETTY criminals breaking and entering (but will not stop HARDCORE criminals), and sometimes shoplifting (these are private cameras which is a different matter as owner has chosen to install).
