The Ron Paul 2012 campaign is hard at work in Iowa today, encouraging voters to turn out in the nation’s first presidential caucus.
Reacting to the late surge of former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum over the past 24 hours, the Paul campaign has sought to further educate voters on what Santorum really stands for.
In Press releases and email shots, the Paul campaign has highlighted that Santorum is a very liberal candidate with a voting record that endorses big government, foreign aid and pre emptive war.
The Paul campaign is pushing the fact that Santorum endorsed Arlen Specter, who became the key Senate vote to pass Obamacare in 2010.
Santorum’s support for Specter in 2004 proved crucial in the primary, in which Specter defeated (Pat) Toomey with just 50.8 percent of the vote.
Specter then backed Obama’s healthcare program, providing the swing vote to pass the legislation in the Senate. Specter also continued to push for fierce gun control during his years in the Senate.
Indeed, as the Paul campaign has pointed out via a press release from Dudley Brown, Executive Director of the National Association for Gun Rights, Santorum has a long history of supporting gun control.
“In the 90s, he voted to support the Lautenberg Gun Ban, which stripped law-abiding gun owners of their Second Amendment rights for life, simply because they spanked their children or did nothing more than grab a spouses wrist.” writes Brown.
“He voted for a bill in 1999 disguised as an attempt to increase penalties on drug traffickers with guns… but it also included a provision to require federal background checks at gun shows.”
“And then he voted with gun-controlling Democrats Dianne Fienstein and Frank Lautenberg to mandate locks on handguns in 2005.” the press release continues.
Out on the campaign trail, both Ron Paul and Rand Paul have been addressing Santorum’s record in an effort to enlighten voters on the issues he stands for.
When asked about Santorum during In an interview with CNN, Ron Paul asserted “He is very liberal, have you looked at his record?”
“He spends too much money. He wasn’t leading the charge to slash the budget and vote against big governemnt.” Paul added.
Also present during the interview was Kentucky Senator Rand Paul, who noted that Santorum “voted to double the size of the department of education.”
“He voted to expand medicare and add free drugs for senior citizens, and he’s voted for foreign aid, those are not conservative principles.” the Senator added.

Rand Paul also appeared on the Jan Mickelson radio show Monday and expanded on Santorum’s support for big government.
“…he was a big supporter of Medicare Part D, the expansion of Medicare, a big supporter of No Child Left Behind… So I call him a big government moderate and I think conservatives need to be wary before thinking Santorum can be their champion.”
Paul also spoke of Santorum’s “trigger happy” foreign policy.
“Ron Paul does not want [Iran] to have a nuclear weapon, but the question is do you want someone who’s trigger happy to be your commander in chief?,” Paul said.
Santorum is “a little over-eager to drop bombs,” The Senator added.
Santorum was a staunch supporter of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, and has continually endorsed the War on Terror, sharing the views of neoconservatives and the Bush doctrine in regards to foreign policy.
“He’s also someone who never served in the military.” Paul continued, noting “Ron Paul served in the military, will use force against our enemies if it’s required and if Congress approves of it, but I’m a little concerned about someone who didn’t serve in the military like Santorum, who’s a little over-eager to bomb countries because I don’t think he’s maturely thinking through the process and the consequences of war.”
