Pentagon Wants Packs Of Robots To Detect “Non-cooperative Humans”

The Pentagon has put out a request to contractors to develop teams of robots that can search for, detect and track “non-cooperative” humans in “pursuit/evasion scenarios”.
The request, which can be read on the Department of Defense Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program website here, calls for a “Multi-Robot Pursuit System” to be operated by one person.
The proposal describes the need to
“…develop a software/hardware suit that would enable a multi-robot team, together with a human operator, to search for and detect a non-cooperative human subject.
The main research task will involve determining the movements of the robot team through the environment to maximize the opportunity to find the subject, while minimizing the chances of missing the subject. If the operator is an active member of the search team, the software should minimize the chance that the operator may encounter the subject.”
It is seemingly important to the Pentagon that the operator should not have to come into contact with the person being chased down by the machines.
The description continues:
“The software should maintain awareness of line-of-sight, as well as communication and sensor limits. It will be necessary to determine an appropriate sensor suite that can reliably detect human presence and is suitable for implementation on small robotic platforms.”

Paul Marks at The New Scientist points out that given the propensity to adapt this kind of military style technology for domestic purposes such as crowd control, the proposal is somewhat concerning.
“…how long before we see packs of droids hunting down pesky demonstrators with paralysing weapons? Or could the packs even be lethally armed?” Marks asks.
Marks interviewed Steve Wright, an expert on police and military technologies, from Leeds Metropolitan University, who commented:
“The giveaway here is the phrase ‘a non-cooperative human subject’.
What we have here are the beginnings of something designed to enable robots to hunt down humans like a pack of dogs. Once the software is perfected we can reasonably anticipate that they will become autonomous and become armed.
We can also expect such systems to be equipped with human detection and tracking devices including sensors which detect human breath and the radio waves associated with a human heart beat. These are technologies already developed.”
Indeed, noted as PHASE III on the Pentagon proposal is the desire to have the robots developed to “intelligently and autonomously search”.
Earlier this year another top robotics expert, Noel Sharkey, Professor of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics at the University of Sheffield, warned listeners to the Alex Jones show that the world may be sleepwalking into a potentially lethal technocracy and has called for safeguards on such technology to be put into place.
Professor Sharkey stated:
“If you have an autonomous robot then it’s going to make decisions who to kill, when to kill and where to kill them. The scary thing is that the reason this has to happen is because of mission complexity and also so that when there’s a problem with communications you can send a robot in with no communication and it will decide who to kill, and that is really worrying to me.”
The professor also warned that such autonomous weapons could easily be used in the future by law enforcement officials in cites, pointing out that South Korean authorities are already planning to have a fully armed autonomous robot police force in their cities.
Perhaps one candidate for the Pentagon’s “Multi-Robot Pursuit System” proposal is Boston Dynamics’ rather frightening BigDog (pictured above). The latest version of this hydraulic quadruped robot can carry up to 340lb load and recovers its balance even after sliding on ice and snow:

Robotron: 2084 (often called simply Robotron) is an arcade game created in 1982 by the company Vid Kidz (Eugene Jarvis and Larry DeMar) for Williams Electronics. you can’t hear it when it is hooked up to a wired power supply (2:14 to 3:09). The only noise you hear is from the crappy fossil fuel power source they are using for the field testing. If they go to a solid state power supply that can meet the demand load, (batteries too heavy and weak…perhaps nuclear) they will be truely evil. Don’t make the mistake of thinking this is nothing to worry about just becaus eit is noisy. It isn’t noisy at all. Pretty damn quiet actually.

I agree with aaron, but this machine is public. What is scary about this is the idea that black projects must have robots so much further advanced than this. Imagine the advanced robots that can easily hunt down humans who “aren’t cooperating.” These upcoming years will be very interesting and i’m afraid that the technology is getting too advanced. Hopefully we can get the scientist who are creating these and other more advanced projects to wake up and realize they are part of the military industrial complex that is destroying our liberty and ending America as we USE to know it.

On the bright side, these super duper uber leet high-tech projects will further to bring leviathan down.
History, and the writings of Bill Lind, should already be enough to tell that reliance on this super gadgetry stuff never works, and much of it is the dream of marketers in the MIC. Possibly the procurement people at the Pentagon read so many pamphlets from these high tech companies that they actually believe the BS.
Furthermore, the desire to rely on these advanved platforms shows some important things:
- they are not 100 percent sure they can rely on humans to follow orders and would rather draw on the generation of kids desensitized by video games and take advantage of what Dave Grossman calls “Technological Seperation”.
- a measure of desperation that overrides the logical impulse to view such lofty goals with some cynicism. Much like a man falling off a high-rise flapping his arms.

If ‘BigDog’ comes to your farm then just use some old failsafe methods. We have millennia of ingenuity behind us. Try a ‘Lassoo’ (sp?), should be a piece of cake for all you cowboys and cowgals. Alternatively, try a ‘bear-trap’ or perhaps dig a pit, cover it with very thin branches and leaf matter and then guide the blasted thing towards it. Hell, fill it with oil / acid / tar / paint / whatever you think is best. Talking of paint, you could paintball the thing in the face, it’s handler will be human and driven mostly by visual information. Take out the robot’s eyes. When it is blind, go pull the plug.
If you are in a city then take to the roofs, have a ladder to help you between houses pull the ladder with you to enable swift covering of ground to a safe location. BigDog can’t follow over a ladder either. Drop concrete on the thing. If you think you’re a target then you’ve time to prepare. Molotov may effect some infra red sensors, electricity and power cables are everywhere. Shock it to death. Water can be found, head for the sewers, can BigDog swim? I certainly doubt it.

You know your environment, BigDog doesn’t and neither does the handler. The handler also cannot control any more senses than his own in order to make judgements, he is not superhuman or robotic. This thing is scary enough to think about. Think about 20 generations more advanced and a swarm of 100’s of 10 bot teams. I’ve detailed some possible solutions from the previous posts to get everyone thinking on solutions, but must say – with the way these are designed to work as insects you must keep in mind that these will be working as a team and thus constantly providing highly sensitive GPS, radio, infared, etc. positioning coordinates to other team members (bots).
I’m not saying to not take them out – just keep that in mind – destroy one and you have the others coming asap. You’d have to have a coordinated guerilla effort to resist for any length of time. Take a shot and elimate one or two – disappear into tunnel system, pop up a few minutes later, take another, wait, decoy, deception, distraction, quick attacks then disappear.
Electromagnetic (Radio, Microwave, LFM, etc.): good solution in theory – could take out multiple bots at same time and possibly from long ranges. Could be defeated by simple shielding though (thats why your computer speakers don’t screw your monitor up like normal house speakers will do to your monitor or TV). Maybe the tech guys could figure a way to boost strength and focus the beam – ya know, like the microwave guns that they’ll be using on us?
Personal EMP device: good idea, highly efficient in theory but would also fry any of your electro goodies or com systems, also prob very difficult, highly illegal, & extremely dangerous to produce. Feasibility issue unknown – how much explosives/powder to create the neccessary pulse to defeat shielding? May not even be portable device without exotic high grade explosives.
Sticky bombs: seems like another effective idea if could be placed without getting gunned down first. Perhaps a spring loaded trap that would ’slap it” onto the belly of the thing? Easier to produce than emp but would be still be dangerous for amateurs.
High Powered Rifle: nothing like good ole hot lead at supersonic speeds. Although, with a prototype payload of 340 pounds – the working model will most likely be armored. 50 cal would surely drop one, right? ‘06 or .308 maybe. 223 or 7.62×39 – will just have to find out. The first patriots will have to get the word out what rounds and where to aim.
Regular & Specialty Shotgun rounds: ‘00 Buck could be a great choice targeted towards a weak area like a leg or sensor. “Bolo” (2 large balls connected by wire) rounds may work great to severe one or more legs off.
Paint guns: no personal experience with range or accuracy. May actually be a good option though as camera lenses will most likely be covered by bullet proof glass/polymer. I guess, though, they could plan in a little mini washer/wiper blade.
Hide from above – molatov cocktail: these things won’t be deer – they will be on constant roving duty – scanning up into the trees, directed by your infared signature, will not be a problem and neither will shooting you out of the tree.
Covered pit – simple, effective, could work well. Have to make sure you or your people didn’t fall in either though. Sensitivity, capturing un-intended victims could be issues. Perhaps remote pin removal to spring trap would have some advantages.
Bear trap – would have to be hidden really well. Being hidden this well may be dangerous to wrong people, animals, etc. May be defeated easily if there is a metal detector type sensor mounted on robot.
Trip line – Ewok style pounding wooden beams – ya, the thought made be laugh too. but don’t discount some old technology. You could have a line of them along a row of trees – smash whatever came by. No metal, well camouflauged. Some issues though with accidental trippings, oh and annihilating any wildllife coming through.
Snare trap – need to be pretty stout to keep in place. Would have to be well camoflauged and senstivity set correctly.
Net trap – would not totally disarm and would still be dangerous. would alert other bots – could be good distraction / decoy / ambush technique.
Simple Tarp drop – temporaily visual blind bot but would be easily ’seen’ through via infared and could obviously be shot through.
Electrical fence – simple, most likely have to be defeated through human means, could fry the guts of the bots, may be no juice though – can’t count on.
Mine field – obviously highly illegal, extremely dangerous, and don’t think they carry them at the local wal-mart, history as effective war tool with often unintended horrific results (think lots of children with 1 leg).
Massive line formation medieval style with shields and every possible firearm, projectile launcher, beam weapon, hatchet, axe, lance, shovel, pick, freakin whatever. Must have huge number of people, will be massive casulties, will psychologically stun operators if they still have any human emotion left. Hopefully capture one to learn its weaknesses and communicate to others.

None of these high dollar toys will be worth the expense, but great for us. They will use up their resources costing millions each and we will be able to destroy or disable one with a road flare $10 of improvised devices.
I say encourage them to spend their money on these things, that will be that much less available funds for useful and effective things.
