iraq Petraeus: al Qaeda remains a dangerous force in Iraq, work to be done

Al Qaeda remains a dangerous force in Iraq despite a general decline in violence and U.S. troops must continue to confront the militant group, the outgoing top U.S. general in the country said.

General David Petraeus told al Arabiya television he believed recent success in reducing violence had restored the United States’ image with Iraqis. Troops initially greeted as liberators but later viewed as occupiers were now again accepted as friends. In the interview recorded on Monday and scheduled for broadcast later on Friday, Petraeus was asked whether al Qaeda had been defeated in Iraq.

“You will not find any military leader who will say this … all we can say is al Qaeda is still dangerous,” he said.

Petraeus’ comments were translated into English from an Arabic transcript of the interview sent to Reuters.

“It is certain more of these crimes will be committed, and we must continue working to confront these attacks,” he said.

Petraeus and his former deputy and designated successor Lieutenant-General Raymond Odierno are together credited with implementing a military strategy that helped reduce violence in Iraq, which slid towards sectarian civil war after the bombing of a revered mosque in early 2006.

I think it is about time the top brass woke up and smelled the coffee!

      1. It is about oil rights not terrorism against a home made enemy.
      2. The rest of the world knows number 1 above!

For god’s sake stop trying to treat us like idiots and grow up. Try taking a leaf out of the Russian way of doing things and use contracts and business dealings to get things done. So, when the US government come to their senses and stop living in the land of make believe…. we can move forward and be human again. Let’s start with the economy crisis that threatens all of us more than Al Qaeda could ever do. The reason being, when this one comes home it will be the world that suffers en mass and a total break down of the monetary system is something to be feared. The thing is this NOT a fairytale and is coming and it will bring the world to it’s knees. Something that will resemble the 14th century way of living…. a new dark age!!!

    2. WTF Says:

This story sounds like a mainstream story.
At the rate of 5000 troops per year, we should be out in 30 years.

    3. WTF Says:

Al Quida is CIA right? Of course there still a threat. Duh!

    4. Dan Says:

Funny how we say they are very violent, even though they became more violent when we invaded! People say we “freed” the people. Yah from Saddam but then we installed a new less opressive dictator named Bush. If having a machine gunner on every corner ready to shoot anyone down if there is even one guy with a gun I don’t think that is free.

    5. Knownot Says:

But wait, for the past 6 years all the reports claimed significant progress towards eliminating the Al CIAda, I mean the Al Masada, I mean the Al Quida threat in Afghanistan and Iraq! We were almost out of there….
Suddenly I feel less safe.. Hey, let’s impose a more intrusive Patriot Act, increase Fatherland Security and invade Iran!

    6. Bill Clinton & Dick Cheney should be hung for treason... Says:

“General David Petraeus told al Arabiya television he believed recent success in reducing violence had restored the United States’ image with Iraqis.”

ARE YOU F@#KING KIDDING ME? WHAT IMAGE? SHOOTING CIVILIANS FROM THE BACK OF AN SUV? KICKING DOWN DOORS AND TERRORIZING THE GENERAL POPULATION? RUINING THE WATER. DEPLETED URANIUM CONTAMINATING DNA FOR GENERATIONS? THROWING A PUPPY DOG FROM MOUNTAIN? WTF.

“Troops initially greeted as liberators but later viewed as occupiers were now again accepted as friends.”

OH BROTHER. GET THE HECK OUT OF THE MIDDLE EAST AND LEAVE THOSE POOR PEOPLE BE.

    10. ACL Says:

I agree with the General and that’s because they are Al-Qaeda, so that dangerous and evil force will never go away in a war that could never and will never be won. But again, this was part of the plan and so far so good. As long as you have idiots you have a plan and the odds of it working are even better. Sorry, but I had to say it the way it actually is rather then the way one would like it to be heard.

    12. American Muslim in Egypt Says:

Gen. Betray us is a liar. No one over here in the Middle East thinks America is their friends and especially Iraq. Iraq wants them the hell out. I thank the muslims that came to fight against the illegal occupation, they are not terrorists, the Americans are the terrorists!!!! Since when did defending your country make you a terrorist? Oh yea, the 911-Truth movement should know, America thinks your terrorists too. People over here think Americans constant terrorist blabber is a joke and a sign of how uneducated Americans are. I’m so sick of it!!!!!

    13. john Says:

I know and worked for GEN Petraeus as his top ranger instructor here at Fort Campbell. I also fought with him during the invasion of Iraq. There is one thing i can honestly say about this man, he never lies.

    14. LR Says:

I must agree with ACL. They have declared war on poverty, illiteracy, drugs and terrorism. Now if you plan on having long term conflicts – those four are a must on any aggressors list.
The Zionists (neocons) and military industrialists have done their homework. All their ducks are in a row. They will not relinquish power without conflict. The Zionists and Military Industialists themselves are cowards and not willing to shed their blood, however, they are well prepared to sacrifice the lives of others and spill their blood.
I pray you promoters and lovers of freedom are prepared for whats to come….

AMERICANMUSLIMINEGYPT: i cant even defend my own country. for one im of native american descent. i know all too well what the u.s. is capable of. were still living with poverty, oppression, and no justice. our culture and beliefs are overpowered by christianity. christianity relies on money, followers and secular gov. otherwise, their churches and institutions would have died out long ago if it wasn’t for the secular government keeping them in power. christians will argue and say well thats not us thats the fake christians but it is them they partake in it and benefit mostly from it and expect us to compromise or convert to there beliefs if not were told were still in darkness and if we say theres many paths to god they say theres only one. americans don’t understand why the u.s. keeps losing the peace, war after war. for people to think the iraqis will forget what our country did to them is foolish. our people haven’t. there are americans even veterans and those still serving and many others who protested the ongoing war and that the iraqi people be compensated for the destruction the u.s. caused them but it fell on deaf ears. obamas and mccains. i’m just as sick of it as you are but i’m also afraid for everyone. JOHN: that comment “the invasion of iraq” solidifies everything. are you that devoid of spirit? its not like you said you were going out for a loaf of bread.

    16. LR Says:

FYI John, General Betraysus did his fighting miles away from any combat. You two must have spent many long happy hours putting a high lustre polish on your rockets!

    19. CandyAppleRed Chevy SuperSport Says:

Who started all this Al Quida shuffle? Brezenzki in a book, coined the term AlQuida. Who hired, trained, armed and funded Al Quida? Our beloved American government. Who was seen holding hands and yes, even sometimes kissing on the lips in photo op after photo op? The Bush Sr., Jr., and assorted Saudis. O.K. Now, for the biggy. What think tank said/wrote: “America needs a new Pearl Harbor”? I’m having a brain fart right now but there were the usual suspects like Wolfowitz, Cheney, Jebb Bush and etc.. I believe it was America for a new Century.

The real big biggie though is American governments politicians love affair with the state of Israel.

The people who died that day back in Sept. of ‘01 didn’t deserve it. All the innocents in the Middle

East, including all the soldiers, didn’t deserve to die or have horrible negative outcomes like that.

We were suckered into this awful war and now it is time to stop. Stop this stupid death. Stop doing the bidding of these bat s--- crazy war mongering, humanity hating bastards. That’s it.

NO MORE WAR U WHORES. OUT

    20. qwe Says:

It’s amazing the lies and the manipulation coming from the controlled media. Alqueda this alqueda that, captured alqueda number 2 100 times??

    21. qwe2 Says:

It’s clear the controlled media keep’s on pushing these lies about alqueda in iraq. In order to manipulate the American people to keep on supporting the war. American need’s to realize that Sept11 was not done by alqueda but by their own government.

    22. Lookout Says:

C.U.F.F. = CITIZENS UNITED FOR FREEDOM.
To unite once a month in protest and boycott against the United Sttates Government.

When: The 11th day of every month

What: Protest 911 and the N.W.O.
To also take money out of the hands of the government to stop the N.W.O.

How: Stay home from work (if at all possible), This will take tax dollars out of their hands.
Do not buy anything (especially gasoline unless it is used to drive to a local protest), This will take tax dollars out of their hands and out of the hands of the oil companies.
Do not buy ANYTHING on that day. This will take tax dollars out of their hands.
Do not use electricity to light your house on the night of the 11th…..BURN CANDLES in rememberance of those who lost their lives that day. This will save you money that can be put toward burning dvd’s and handing them out at the local protest.
Do not deposit money, do not do business transactions, do not eat out,…NOTHING!
Do form a local protest group. Do help spread the word about 911 and the N.W.O.

Pass this on to everyone you know. We will make the 11th of EVERY month a day of protest against the 911 cover-up and the N.W.O. We will effectivly take money out of the hands of those who cover up 911 and are creating the N.W.O.

WE WILL TIE THE HANDS OF THOSE WHO BIND US…C.U.F.F. THEM.
We are the ones who ultimatly financially support what they are doing. If we do not buy, they make no money to create all the bad things we are now facing. Please stand with me on this on the 11th day of EVERY month. Together we can make a difference.

    23. TRUTHPLZ Says:

Al-qaeda in Iraq huh? I don’t believe it. Bulls---. How do they know this? Name tags? Liars…

    24. American Muslim in Egypt Says:

yellowhak1: I know what your saying. Until you become the enemy, the victim of murderous crimes, rape, torture, have your land taken away, and there is nothing you can do, your depth of understanding is limited. No one should have to go through this, not Native Americans, not African Americans, not Muslims or any other religion, or any race. I also have Native American blood, and Alaska Native relatives in my family. I understand the struggle. The problem is that I wish Americans understood that it is not someone else who will always be oppressed. It is ever increasing that it is those Americans that are not of the elite who are soon to be as oppressed as those in the past and present have been. I dont wish this on anyone, but it seems until it happens will they believe they are not untouchable, nor do they have the rights they think they do.

America was the greatest experiment ever commenced. The idea that you could bring people of all religions, and races together and live peacefully is a grand and wonderful thing. That we could take care of our people fairly and equally through the Constitution of the United States of America is what we were striving for after so many people died for this Constitution, is a undertaking blessed by something more powerful then all of us. We didnt finish working on our country, but over the years it has gotten some what better, not perfect, but better. However, it seems America has taken a turn for the worse, and I dont know if she will recover. Those of us who try to help her, end up dead, in jail, scared, and find not many are willing to help save her.

      America R.I.P
