There is deepening concern that North Korea is about to test-fire a ballistic missile.
Japan has indicated it is particularly worried.
Officials in South Korea and the United States have noticed increased activity at a missile site inside North Korea.
It is thought the communist country could be preparing to test fire a Rodong missile as part of an annual military exercise.
Rodong missiles have a range of more than 1,000 kilometres.
In 1998, Japan was stunned when North Korea fired a longer-range missile across the archipelago.
A top-selling newspaper says the Japanese Government has sent two high-tech destroyers and an EP-3 surveillance plane to patrol the sea between Japan and North Korea.
