Senator Rand Paul will push ahead with plans to defund abortion organisation Planned Parenthood, and stop the “non-profit” from getting quite so many millions in federal funding.

“I think the time is now to discuss whether taxpayer dollars should be going to such a gruesome procedure,” Paul noted in an appearance on Fox News Sunday. “People are outraged by this and I think the American people deserve to have a vote on it.”

Paul noted that he was putting together numerous different strategies to defund the organisation, including a discharge petition that would need the support of at least 16 more senators.

“I think we might likely win that vote,” he said.

Also appearing on CBS’ “Face the Nation,” Paul said: “My legislation won’t be about whether it’s legal or not … I think everybody in America is horrified by this, and they don’t want their tax dollars going to this group.”

Also appearing on Fox News Sunday, a fellow GOP presidential candidate, Carly Fiorina, called the recent revelations on Planned Parenthood “an abomination”.

“I find it astounding that anyone can defend this,” she said, noting that Planned Parenthood had previously lobbied against ultrasound technology being shown to pregnant women before they decided on whether to have an abortion, yet were using the exact same technology to carry out harvesting of body parts.

Planned Parenthood’s president, Cecile Richard also appeared on Sunday programming, again claiming that the organisation had done nothing wrong, and attempting to paint up those who oppose the group as extremists.

“The folks behind it are part of the most militant anti-abortion movement,” she said. “This entire effort is a political smear campaign.”

“We should not base any kind of decisions about healthcare in this country based on highly sensationalized folks who are nothing but militant anti-abortion extremists,” she also said.

Planned Parenthood receives almost $500 million in annual taxpayer funding, mostly through Medicaid and grants. Currently, Federal law expressly prohibits the use of government funds to pay for abortions.

While Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell fast-tracked Paul’s legislation to have a Congressional vote sooner on the matter, he also blocked amendments to the Highway Bill this past weekend that would have defunded Planned Parenthood.

A stand-alone bill on the matter would be subject to filibuster, and would require 60 votes to proceed, rather than an amendment to an existing bill, that would only need 50 votes.
