Rockefeller: Internet is “Number One National Hazard”

According to the great-grandson of John D. Rockefeller, nephew of banker David Rockefeller, and former Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Jay Rockefeller the internet represents a serious threat to national security. Rockefeller is not alone in this assessment. His belief that the internet is the “number one national hazard” to national security is shared by the former Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell and Obama’s current director Admiral Dennis C. Blair.

“It really almost makes you ask the question would it have been better if we had never invented the internet,” Rockefeller mused during the confirmation hearing of Gary Locke (see video), Obama’s choice for Commerce Secretary. He then cites a dubious figure of three million cyber “attacks” launched against the Department of Defense every day. “Everybody is attacked, anybody can do it. People say, well it’s China and Russia, but there could be some kid in Latvia doing the same thing.”
Jay Rockefeller’s comments reveal an astounding degree of ignorance – or if not ignorance, outright propaganda. Since the September 11, 2001, attacks the government has cranked up the fear quotient in regard to cyber attacks and so-called cyber terrorism, a virtually non-existent threat except in the minds security experts and politicians. In the years since the attacks, not one real instance of real cyberterrorism has been recorded.
“Cyberattacks on critical components of the national infrastructure are not uncommon, but they have not been conducted by terrorists and have not sought to inflict the kind of damage that would qualify as cyberterrorism,” writes Gabriel Weimann, author of Terror on the Internet. “Nuclear weapons and other sensitive military systems, as well as the computer systems of the CIA and FBI, are ‘air-gapped,’ making them inaccessible to outside hackers. Systems in the private sector tend to be less well protected, but they are far from defenseless, and nightmarish tales of their vulnerability tend to be largely apocryphal.”

“Psychological, political, and economic forces have combined to promote the fear of cyberterrorism,” Weimann continues. “From a psychological perspective, two of the greatest fears of modern time are combined in the term ‘cyberterrorism.’ The fear of random, violent victimization blends well with the distrust and outright fear of computer technology.”
“The sky is not falling, and cyber-weapons seem to be of limited value in attacking national power or intimidating citizens,” notes James Lewis of the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Such a threat is overblown, Lewis explains. He notes that “a brief review suggests that while many computer networks remain very vulnerable to attack, few critical infrastructures are equally vulnerable.” In other words, Rockefeller’s example of a kid in Latvia with a laptop posing a serious “hazard” to national security is little more than sensationalistic propaganda.
So-called cyber terrorists are far less of a threat than government. China and Australia have recently imposed draconian censorship on internet freedom. Brazil, Denmark, Canada, Finland, Ireland , Italy, Israel, the United Kingdom, the United States, and many other countries also impose nominal censorship on internet freedom. Urgent calls to restrict the medium in various ways through legislation and government action have increased over the last few years (for more detail, see Internet Censorship: A Comparative Study).
However, the real threat to internet freedom is currently posed by IT and ISP corporations, not the government.

As Alex Jones explained last June, large corporate ISPs are now in the process of imposing bandwidth caps and routing traffic over their networks and blocking certain targeted websites. For instance, in 2005 AOL Time-Warner was caught blocking access to all of Jones’ flagship websites across the entire United States. Other instances of outright censorship include the UK ISP Tiscali blocking subscribers from reaching material on the 7/7 London bombings and Google’s continued and habitual censorship of 9/11 material and Alex Jones’ films on the ever-popular YouTube. Jay Rockefeller’s warning about virtually non-existent and largely absurd cyberterrorism reveals increasing government nervousness and apprehension about the medium as a whole, especially as the internet grows by leaps and bounds as an alternative news and activism medium. On numerous occasions over the last few years alternative websites have posted articles exposing government crime, articles the corporate media has largely ignored. During the Bush years, the internet served as a vital resource for information on everything from torture and the destruction of civil liberties to the invasions and occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan, information the corporate media was often unable or unwilling to carry.
For instance, earlier this month Infowars broke a story concerning the Missouri Information Analysis Center and its effort to profile Libertarians and Ron Paul supporters as terrorists. The story was subsequently picked up by the corporate media (although Alex Jones and Infowars did not receive attribution).
As more corporate media outlets fail — as evinced by several high profile newspapers going out of business recently — and more people flock to the internet to get their news and information, the government will increasingly employ fear tactics designed to portray the medium as a refuge for terrorists, pedophiles, and other miscreants.
It appears the Obama administration is attempting to micromanage this effort. Last week CNet “obtained a summary of a proposal from Senators Jay Rockefeller (D-W.V.) and Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) that would create an Office of the National Cybersecurity Advisor, part of the Executive Office of the President. That office would receive the power to disconnect, if it believes they’re at risk of a cyberattack, ‘critical’ computer networks from the Internet.” As well, the effort would put the White House National Cybersecurity Advisor in charge of coordinating cyber efforts within the intelligence community and within civilian agencies.

if we the people would just reclaim our “sovereign citizenship” things of this nature could never happen, because as is stands as of right now if you have not reclaimed your “sovereign citizenship” you have no rights no declaration of independence rights, amendment rights, or any other right for that matter, THIS IS FACT that has been proven in the courts time after time,the only thing you have is 14th amendment privileges which can be given or taken at any time by the grantee.

Of coure the Rocker-fellers believe it’s a national hazard. How else would the majority of people who are waking up have had a clue as to what hazards the ‘rocks’ have caused unless it were for the internet. They like for us to be blind and in the dark.
I’m not a betting person usually but I would bet my next unemployment check that the next “terror attack” will be a complete shut down of all internet services globally. This will provide them with their “bank holiday” (which will cause quite a panic).. it will disallow us to communicate as we are here.. and as most jobs rely on the internet in some form.. it will cause us to beg our leaders to “fix” the “problem”. Might even keep us quiet for a while and in fear when it’s restored. Don’t make waves.. just go with the flow mentality they’ve expected from us all along.

Without the use of internet 1, we have the opportunity to speak out in person, evaluate our neighbors (neighborhoods) for like minded patriots. We will have to change tactics and possibly grow our physical support by word of mouth. Once the mask of “privacy” has been withdrawn, our only choice is to speak out in small, private groups. What I find interesting is that the NWO plan has been ongoing for thousands of years. Many times in the past, their plans failed, and they where run out of the countries they where operating in. It seems that only in our generation are they able to possibly achieve it. DARPA created the net to begin with. Today, it is being used as well for propaganda. There is so much information out there that it overwhelms people. People spend hours a day on it. Just two generations ago, people would not stand for what is taking place today, they resisted, and that was without the net.
I know your point, and I agree. But it is a double edged sword, and for the most part I think it has lead to more inaction, then actual action. More paralysis, due to information overload, than decisive, deliberate action.
If they are fear mongering, then the internet is a perfect medium to disseminate that fear at the speed of light. Do you think they are not using the net for this intention?
Again, it is both good and bad, but to glorify it without acknowledging the cons is naive.
I think of myself and how much time I have spent online, and how many times my blood pressure has shot through the roof, lack of sleep, etc. I have suffered alot because of the net.
And to think that the net is the only way of gaining information is absurd.
The subjects talked about today are not new, in fact they have been talked about for a very long time. Back when people actually socialized with one another, when they read books, when information was passed down generation after generation by parents and grandparents.
Im not advocating anything here, just stating observations. I am neither for the net or against it. I do know that it has taken alot of happiness out of my life, as well as enriched it.
I also know, that perception is concepts are based on perceptions, and if I knew nothing of what I know because of the internet, then I would still be just as enriched, and just as unhappy, or happy in life. Sure, I ‘might’ not know about certain things, but I would have spent more time doing things that I loved, or outside in Nature. Knowing what is truly going on in the World is not the end all of life, for in reality, there are entire sets of knowledge that dwarf all of it, that we have no idea about.
I think that is in essence what everything is about today. A distraction. The wars, 911, conspiracies, etc. Its all a distraction. A distraction from the real information that they dont want us to find out about. Whatever that is. It just seems to obvious to me, this fact of distraction. Everything they have done, has begged us to be wrapped up in it, has begged us to be distracted. Why? The elite have ruled the World for years, without the need to show us so clearly. Why are they so eager for us to know? You know?
Its like they plead with us to take the bait, to see what they are doing. Like now, and the economy. People will say they got caught stealing everything from us and so on. They already owned it all, even us legally via our birth certificates. So why do they want us so badly to see this, to understand this, to view it?
I think I know the answer, but time will tell.

We don’t have the luxury of having crowds of un-avaoidable protesters over here that you get in New York etc… Without the internet the USA would have to fight this thing all by yourselves because the rest of us would have no clue what the hell was going on. Without the internet people from all over the world would not have access to infowars and infowars movie and book sales, so Alex would make a lot less money and this would greatly harm the movement in America.

It’s not so much that The Internet was invented, it’s that it became very popular. Before the Internet became popular people used a system called BBS and a networking system called Fidonet. To run a BBS you set your modem to answer the phone and connect to your computer, on which you ran the Bulitin Board System. Only one user at a time with one line but the BBS had files you could download or upload and a message board and an email system.
It was really only for geeks but there were boards for every thing you could think of, just like websites are now.
The spirit of the BBS continues with website. AOL was simply a very large BBS but that did not stop you running your own one.
If the Internet is killed then the spirit of the BBS/Internet will continue and people will simply build another one. The way people now hate TV they will hate what happens to the Internet so will seek out the one we will create.
Anything mainstream these days has to be ‘child safe’, some adults will always work around this.

We talk over VOIP too without being connected to a corporate server or the regular internet.
It’s just a matter of getting the gain up on that dongle so others can receive the signal from the other servers in the neighborhood.
Think of it like P2P except MORE!!!!

Everyone should download everything they can and back up everything that is important on the web. Then if/when they do shut down the Internet then we can create our own neighborhood networks through ad-hoc wireless and hardwired networks through cat 5cat 6 cabling with repeaters etc. we can start our own small “Internet pockets” and with enough $$ we could even invest collectively in fiber cableing! The internet may die but like a phoenix from the ashes it could rise again! As long as we band together!

Anyone who is pro internet censorship in ANY way, including the “vile” and pernicious content like hategroups and pronograsphy, is doing the rest of mankind a great injustice. By banning something you dislike, you permit others to ban something you cherish. By censoring nudity in one avenue, you clear the way for someone to censor your most-loved interests. Double-edged swords come to mind. Damnit, how is it that people in their right minds can even remotely agree with what that Rocksnake-skinned feller has to say? To argue for censorship is to sacrifice your own tongue.

I never trusted banks. And now that we live with the debit cards, credit cards and the vanishing tellers (real workers) it made me even more suspicious. I never had a credit card. Never did. I always thought it was a pay through the nose for nothing crap. I mean whatever happened to saving up and then bying. Now we live in a get now, pay later or pay never and leave the bill for the nation.
I shop local whenever I can. I’d rather buy 1 or 2 items full price, then buy 5 or 6 at the local cheap monster stores that swallow up all oportunity for the little guys. And if we don’t want the little guys to go under, it’s our responsibility to keep them afloat. Because after the huge wave of the financial crisis hits, who will be left standing? Well so far it looks like the big boys are on the advantage. And it doesn’t comfort me to know that our children could have nothing but mc jobs and wal-mart jobs in the future. Yeah I love a bargain, but I love my child more.
