Congressman Ron Paul slammed Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke during a House Financial Services Committee meeting today for following a policy of deliberately destroying the dollar and wiping out the American middle class.

Paul held Bernanke to task over his refusal to address the decline of the dollar and its clear link to inflation.

"Inflation comes from the unwise increase in the supply of money credit….to argue that we can continue to debase the currency, which is really the policy of that you’re following, purposely debasing value of currency – which to me seems so destructive….it just puts more pressure on the federal reserve to create capital out of thin air in order to stimulate the economy and usually that just goes into mal-investment," said Paul.

Paul highlighted the fact that the M3 money supply was rising at a rate of 16 per cent and that this was the real rate of inflation.

"History is against you," Paul told Bernanke, "History is on the side of hard money – if you look at stable prices you have to look at the only historic sound money that’s lasted more than a few years – fiat money always ends, gold is the only thing where you get stable prices," he added, pointing out that despite the price of oil’s rapid ascent, it had remained flat when compared to the price of gold.

"I cannot see how we can continue to accept the policy of deliberately destroying the value of money as an economic value," said Paul, adding that the policy was "immoral," and would lead to a reduction in American’s living standards and "the middle class being wiped out."

Asked how he could defend a policy of deliberately depreciating the dollar, Bernanke stumbled through his response and was basically forced to agree with Paul’s point.

Paul’s comments come on the day that the dollar hit its all time low against the Euro.

Earlier this week, former Fed chairman Alan Greenspan laid the groundwork for the further collapse of the greenback by encouraging Gulf states to abandon their dollar peg.

Ron Paul must be the president

    10. Luis Campos Says:

America is headed for destruction when the one world people(Illuminati) take over our country. We are being sold out by the central bankers and all the international companies who are controlling our government. They are not just satisfied with buying out our representatives, but they want to control our buying and selling, and even how we think. We do not need smart cards with microchips, or
chips implanted into our bodies for security. These chips are all a matter of controlling our minds. These chips in the body should be refused, even if you are threatened with death. Chips in the body will control your mind with voices, and you will not only be slaves,
but even act as robots for these evil ones. Refuse their power over you, and when they make chips in the body mandatory.

    11. Patriot Says:

By the time this has ended we will be fighting in the streets, in the hills, and in the end, we will have our country back. When will you folks who don’t see this, wake up? Look at what the corporate media has done to Dr. Paul… There is no chance we can work within the system.

    12. San Smith Says:

I have told you in the past that it does not matter which party is in control because the one world people(Illuminati) control the money and the power. Their desire for power and control is ruthless, and they care not how many they have to kill in order to gain their power.

The one world people control government officials with threats of death or actual assassinations.

    13. Peter Power Says:

There is a world masonic order which is linked to the central bankers and the rest of the one world people who are constantly focused on gaining control of the whole world. These bankers encourage wars and massive country debts to them so they can profit from the interest and control the money and running of every government. These rich control every candidate for high office so they win no matter who is elected. America owes these bankers trillions of dollars from Social Security, war debts, and a huge deficit of payments. Take a look at how the value of your money has decreased against gold, oil and other currencies as the euro. It is because of your growing debts that your dollar is depreciating. These same one world people by trumped up diseases and terrorism are trying to steal all of your freedoms by claiming a need for increased security.

    14. Eddie Calante Says:

These are the one world people who create money out of thin air and print Federal Reserve notes which are only a promise to pay with no backing. The central bankers of the world control the values of currencies by controlling interest rates and how much credit and cash that goes into circulation. These are the people that finance the debts and deficits of all governments. By collecting interest on your National Debt, they profit from the unsuspecting taxpayer. That is why the higher the deficits go, the more money they make. This is why they encourage governments to get into costly wars and spend more money than is collected from taxes. If you know the inner workings of these banking schemes, you can see their plan for complete control of all of your buying and selling. Electronic transfers and smart cards or chips in the body will leave much power in the hands of a few. Eventually, their plan is to try and force everyone to have chips in the body or they will bankrupt that person by zeroing all of that person’s accounts.

    15. Eddie Calante Says:

My people of America, we pride ourselves on our armies and armaments, but they will soon be brought to ruin as the traitors in our government implement their plans.

There are people in high places in our government willing to sell out to those who want a one world government.

    16. Eddie Calante Says:

Our money’s value also has dropped due to our many deficits in our national budget and our balance of trade. Many of these debts are caused by our incessant wars and they are leading us into a fiscal collapse. It is the one world people’s plan to bankrupt us with these useless wars.

The one world people have not only exported our jobs to cheaper labor, but they have also exported much of our manufacturing by investing in other country’s plants. They are stripping our country of almost all heavy industry for so called profits, but this is another plan to destroy our middle class and our economy. By having little manufacturing, we will have less jobs and we will be dependent on other nations for finished goods. We do not have enough exports to pay for our oil and foreign cars and goods. This is a plan to destroy our country for a takeover. Our laws encouraging such a trend with free trade need to be changed to keep our home industries protected, or our dollar will soon be worthless.

We are seeing the slow death of America as we know it as a free republic. The rich and the stockholders may make money on cheaper labor and cheap imports, but the lost jobs are lowering the average wage and requiring people to have multiple jobs just to survive. All of these trends are lowering our standard of living as we become more and more slaves of the rich. America’s fame and fortune are waning

    17. Jesus ia Lord Says:

I must say…NO QUESTION! Ron Paul is AMAZING!
End of STORY! GO forward Ron With your Truth and
Understanding. Truely you are… Over the TOP!

      For America,
      I Thank You

    18. Christoper Chilson Says:

America’s days are numbered as well when the central bankers will bring about a takeover of our country. America will also be divided and given up to the masons and the one world people who will deny your sovereignty rights as you are made a part of the North American Union. Our people have allowed the central bankers to bankrupt our country with useless war debts, and strip our military of its numbers and strength. This together with our immorality is what will bring our nation to a total takeover. When you see mandatory chips in the body, and martial law declared because of a created emergency, you will see the end of our country as a democratic republic.

    19. Michael Hess Says:

The central bankers hold each country under the control of their debts and the right to print bogus money without any backing. They create bonds of debt out of thin air and control the world financial markets. When anyone threatens their control, they have their own security thugs kill their enemies. It is this evil ruthless control that holds all of our nations under the control of these financiers. This group will be the agents of the Antichrist who will implement smart cards and chips in the hand for the mark of the beast. It does not matter which party runs any nation, because these evil men run everything from behind the scenes. Avoid all smart cards and chips in the hand for any buying and selling. When you see these evil people
try to force these chips and national identification numbers on you

    20. ME Says:

oh i thought alex said that all candidates are selected??? so now we should trust ron paul because he talks federal reserve jargin, i think its nearly impossible for ron to win, and even if did im not so sure he would save us all from the fed?

    21. Lombardi Castro Says:

These ruthless one world leaders will do anything to get their way in taking over countries. They try to subvert the people through the banking systems in each country by controlling the spending. These are the central bankers who have a hold on people through their debts. They encourage wars and overspending to purposely run up debts so they could control that country ’s government.

    22. YAHOO Says:

Isnt it AMAZING that the Federal Reserve is a Jewish owned Corporation that prints paper money and then loans it to OUR GOVERNMENT on interest ???

Then the GOVERNMENT gives them the permission to collect the interest and principle of the loan from the people through taxes (IRS).

And so few people even know this !!

      Amazing amazing amazing.

    30. 1337cshacker Says:

THE LOWERY is right. We have to deal with fed reserve in a creative manner, to correctly and safely get them out, without making us look like idiots or “conspirator”.

I loved his response though, talking about, basically nothing, jibberish about the fed reserve act “We are supposed to blah blah blah and we do jus that blah blahness” that would almost sound, to the average fox news potato, as something ‘credible’. The look in brenakewlhateverthecrap eye’s tell everything, lies and deception from the fed, they are killing the dollar and the average American doesn’t even know. “Oh save the dollar plz make moar or sumthinz?!?!” And wtf did he say in the last part if oil keeps going up? I think ron paul made it clear enough, they are counting on the idiots not understanding it to keep “pumping pump pump pum” GO RON PAUL!@!!!

You have no idea what your talking about. Other major countries joined in on a gold standard for their own banks. Gold standard keeps the dollar from falling, and money cant be printed up out of thin air with it in place. People can trade their money for gold with it, and then the gold for other things, in other markets, or our own, for goods or services. What your supposed to be doing when your paying someone is trading gold in a vault somewhere for that item, and that note represents that gold.

You see, the fed ruled out gold standard for the dollar and confiscated allot of gold. They made the money worth nothing when they did this. It was worth ZERO, absolutely nothing, the day after the gold seizure. Instead of everything falling apart then and there, the rug was just pulled out, you see, it continued on normally for the time being to be “Worth” something, and started its slide downward to where we are today. Soon it will go bust, actually, double bust, since it is worth nothing now anyway, its fake worth. So now its already not worth gold in the bank, now its ALSO not worth anything fake wise because there are so many out there. There is no possible way now, even with illusion of wealth in it, its viable. It would be double dead if too many notes are printed, and the final blow is coming soon.

You have gold in a bank ok? The bank wants to lend out the gold, and makes notes for it instead of actually moving the gold itself. Well the federal reserve uses FRACTIONAL LENDING, and it is illegal. Fractional lending is making two notes for 1 gold. Maybe 3 notes, or more… You wind up with the value of the dollar falling when you do this, it can never reach zero from this stand point, but possible 0.000whatever. Its worth about 4 cents now than when the fed took it over in 1917. Legal, proper banks, lend out 1 note for 1 gold. Society is possible like this, trust me, because it worked brilliantly for the first 120something years without the fed. The economy of the past was WAY stronger than this fiat trash money.

So with the money not being backed by gold, fractional lending can be abused (as if the practice of it isn’t abusive enough) with no consequences to themselves. They get immunity from the gov saving themselves, in the end, profiting heavily.

You NEVER want to have a system without a gold standard, because the money is nothin, just paper. Its only used as money for the time being, to be totally bust one day without it. It is “Legal tender, for all debts public and private”, meaning “tender” it is nothing and “all debts public and private” means its being used as a currency. So it says right on your fiat money, in your basic federal reserve jibble jabble:

THIS IS WORTH NOTHING BUT USE IT AS CURRENCY

      ….

But you see ME… The great gold standard that kept us safe, our money safe, was removed by the forces of, and behind, the federal reserve. People were scared into accepting it, they didn’t know what was going on, or going to happen. We would still have it today if it were not for the international central bankers infiltrating us. They are like soldiers of money and information, and using sneak and information, I battle them.

    33. Bobafet Says:

You fools don’t get it. The Congressmen are the problem, not the Fed. The Congressmen can vote to abolish the Fed. Until people stage protests in front of the Congressmen’s homes, they won’t know anyone cares. You are all fools, get ready to eat oatmeal for breakfast daily, and have your food rationed.

    34. THE LOWERY Says:

Bobafet > THE FED REVERSE OWNS CONGRESS…Oatmeal is Good for you…Don’t bash oatmeal.

    35. ME Says:

yeah i know all about how they removed the gold standard and all that but wich countries have a gold standard and how would they be able to trade with u.s dollars if u.s is only legal tender based on debt , wouldn’t they be getting ripped off then??

    36. Incompgov Says:

I am totally out of this country. This country is going to experience a crash like
never seen before. The American people are too stupid to care and they definitely
wont do a thing. Ron Paul is the only politician who “gets it” and the American people
along with the media arent smart enough to figure that out. In any case this country
is going to experience some tough times. Im going to Belize !!! See Ya !!!

    37. ME Says:

how can the money be worth anything at all if its based on debt, wich countries will accept money that is not based on gold ?

    38. THE LOWERY Says:

Bobafet > THE FED REVERSE OWNS CONGRESS…Oatmeal is Good for you…Don’t bash oatmeal. It does start with us, you are right. We must take back the country inorder to make a change; if we, the American Public, keep voting in the same old, same ‘ol…nothing will change. Status Quo exist. Ron Paul is the ONLY candidate that could make that change ad he IS the smartest of them all…even on the Hill. There are enough people out there that support him, and THOSE are the people of the Future…The REVOLUTION has just begun folks and we MUST, each and every night, say our prayers that the others will follow.

70% of the American Voting public wants an end to the War, 90 perent KNOW this Country is at it’s worst shape ever. But that group will only follow and never lead…the 10% are die hard RON PAUL supporters and THEY/WE WILL have to convience the others to follow OUR lead.

It has begun, it will never die, and WE…WILL SUCCEED :)

    39. ME Says:

and who owns the majority of the gold specifically , don’t just tell me some jew!

    40. Ac_bond Says:

Yeah Bobafet is the only cool one here, he knows what’s happening and everyone else is gonna eat otameal.

Personally I love oatmeal. Could eat it every day.

But we’re all fools. Alllll of us.

Help us B, hellllp the lowly fools, oh wise one

    41. Winston Says:

I loved how Paul explained that in relation to gold, oil prices are basically flat over the last several years and went on t o explain currency and inflation. Then Bernake then said “inflation/price index will primarily be based on the rising price of oil.”

Hello? The “price” of oil would NOT be rising if the money supply was stable and backed by gold!! What a deceptive A**@$le!!!

    42. oishi Says:

boba, the fed controls the issue of our money. Therefore, the congress can be easily bought, as well as education, industry, organized religion, the media, energy, etc etc etc

That’s why the congress doesn’t abolish the Fed, despite that it has no constitutional authority to even exist. It doesn’t matter what the congress thinks the people think, because the people can NEVER afford to outbid the Central Bankers. Therefore, the FED is closer to the root of the problem.

Now if we could elect more honest politicians like dr. paul… who cannot be bought….

    43. Tammy Says:

Bobafet is right! Congress isn’t representing the peeps. (funny, I just bought a half dozen buckets of oatmeal) Why is it every time someone puts out the option of “confronting” Congressmen, up pop the stasi/feds/wantabepretend feds/jones bodyguards etc. posting like dryed out xmas trees catching on fire.? Very bizarre truthsite. Has an Enquire Magazine feel. No initiative to activate readers. Message here, be afraid, be very afraid. Nothing you can do except buy videos to share with the unenlightened sleepyheads. Makes me wonder if this is just a front site to gather intelligence on who’s trying to pay attention. Could it be so? Why is there no organizing of patriot energies? Is “we are change” the real deal, or more shillsters? Were are the truth sites that evade the feds and take care of business? (don’t say Afghanistan)

Anyone who is against the Federal Reserve is an antisemitic nutcase. The fed was set-up to keep the military-industrial complex from monopolizing the credit system. It also helps the poor, minorities, and homosexuals find jobs. I’d rather the country be run by diveristy-tolerant billionaires like the Rockefellers and the Rothschilds than a bunch of redneck, red-state aristocrats.

    47. Ken Ray Says:

      College Kid:

“It also helps the poor, minorities, and homosexuals find jobs.”

You know, you are right. The only problem with the s--- that spews from your lips is that, those three groups you mentioned DON’T HAVE TO BE f---ING QUALIFIED FOR SAID JOBS!

“I’d rather the country be run by diveristy-tolerant billionaires like the Rockefellers and the Rothschilds…”

Research the Talmud, and see how damn “diverse” these two family’s are!

Hint: These family’s financed both Germany and the United States in WWI and WWII with loans above 35%.

      It’s called “USURY,” my friend!

    48. gerald Says:

real change has to happen at the state and local levels first. The United STATES, is that, a group of STATES with thier own central government, and their own ability to coin money regardless of fed policy. As states start to coin their own money in direct competition with fed IOU notes, then real wealth can be built. The states need to understand that in 1933, the federal policy to intervene in state business started with Anslinger scaring the s--- out of people, and starting a fear campain. this only after creating the federal reserve banks to finance the takeover of each state, and finally dictating laws to the states that accept fed money. So, to recap, organize state and local levels, bring in the hard currency at those levels to compete with frns, reject federal frns for schools and such, launch state business initiatives, and finally send serious minded state level people to DC as serious federal contenders that dont answer to banks, but to the people that really elected them. This or Tyranny and violence, which is the very last thing we need. This can be done in 3-4 years, and the next federal election will be dominated by Intellegent pro-liberty folks. However, i believe that most folks will just go back to sleep after the fireworks show is over. B. Obama says he is a constitutional lawyer, so imagine his ability to twist it after studying how to do so over a period of 12-15 years! and that is something to be afraid of, since there is no support structure at the state levels to repeal any such changes that WILL be added.
not peace, action is the word.

    51. Zzeke Says:

      @college kid: You’re f---ing delusional. That’s coming from a NY reformist.
The Fed and the Military industrial complex work hand in hand, they always have. War = profit for the reservists (side note: Rockefellers and Rothschilds always hedge their bets by funding both sides of every war – twice the profit, and the winner is always in their pocket). Doesn’t take a college degree to figure that out, just a functional brain.

I’m not even going to formally address the rest of your post, it’s just too ridiculously ignorant – so much so that I have no choice but to assume you’re putting us on. For your sake, I hope that’s the case. Every time you open your mouth around here, it just gets more outrageously stupid. Let’s hope you’re not truly representative of the current younger generation…if so, we’re all doomed.

Like I always tell my friends when we have discussions over the NWO, you can’t have a one world government if you have the United States around, where people, traditionally, have the freedom to think for themselves and carve out a good living for themselves. You bet they don’t want a middle class. The elitists of the world want themselves on top and the rest of us slaves. In order to accomplish that goal, you have to crush the American people. To do that, they need to kill us economically and spiritually. In order to achieve that, they need to control how we think. That’s done through corporation, the ones really running this country. They own the media, television, the politicians and the universities, where kids are systematically turned into little socialists.

In regards to College Kid; I think he is a product of a lot of brain washing. Of course, he wasn’t one of the thousands of U.S. soldiers who fought and died for freedom during the Revolutionary War or World War II. He is just a kid who has no clue what our fore fathers endured so that we can live free like we do. Many sacrificed their lives so he can sit on his/her ass and play video games all day, drive a car, speak his mind, vote, go to college, be beligerant snot and cry foul when it suits his interests. This kid probably hasn’t made a single sacrifice in the name of something good in his short little life.

Both of my grandfathers were in WWII. Both are now dead, the second one having died at the age of 94. He was appalled at what this country has become, how the younger generation either has no idea what he sacrificed, or just plain don’t care. It seems every young kid I talk to is perfectly fine with giving up his freedoms and letting the government do whatever the hell it wants without answering to anyone. They seem perfectly fine with letting corporations sell our country off to the highest bidder.

But to be honest, its not just the kids. It’s a great many people I see every day, from young people to old people and I don’t understand how so many can be so brain dead.

In 1988, when I told people why I voted for Dr. Paul for president, the response I heard most often was, “you’re crazy – that can’t happen here!”.

In 1993, when Clinton/Reno murdered innocent civilians in Waco, the people I spoke with about it refused to believe the truth: “you’re crazy – that can’t happen here!”.

When I explained to some of these same people why GATT and NAFTA would weaken the U.S. economy, they said: “you’re crazy – that can’t happen here!”

On 9/11, when I told my few remaining friends that the U.S. would become militarily imperialistic, they said: “you’re crazy – that can’t happen here!”

Two years ago, when I told my five remaining friends that the U.S. would be under martial law within 5 years, they said: “you’re crazy – that can’t happen here!”

And, last week, when I told my only two remaining friends why the U.S. economy will crash within the next year and not recover, they said: “you’re crazy – that can’t happen here!”

So, what’s my point? Not that I’ve been right about all of this all along, but that most people (unfortunately, people that visit and post here aren’t a majority) are poorly informed, grossly under-educated, and just don’t understand that their choices and lack of action have resulted in the current political situation in the U.S. The globalists have been telling us what they’ve been up to for the last 50 years, but you chose not to listen when you could have made a difference.

You CANNOT stop what’s in motion right now, because people refuse to believe it CAN happen here. Their plan is too far advanced to be derailed in any meaningful fashion by the handful that would and can do anything about it, and the majority of the sheeple in the U.S. are too cowardly to rise up and put a stop to it, preferring “bread and circuses” to freedom.

It only took him how many years to finally do anything about 911…and of course he conveniently waits untill after his presidential bid. Ron Paul has done much more for this country than Kucinich ever will. Dennis wants the government to control our lives, thats why he is a democrat. Ron Paul wants just the opposite. Also, your mistaken; Ron Paul has repeatedly mentioned that a more thorough investigation of 911 would be a good idea…so i’m not sure what else you can expect him to do. There really is no proof like Alex Jones says, that 911 was an inside job. There is a lot of evidence to support that theory, but still no proof. Why would Paul jeopordize all the other battles he’s fighting with the toughest one of all. The media would ignore and attack him even more if he said 911 was an inside job. Let Kucinich fight that battle, and let Ron Paul fight the battle of big government. Your a fool for bashing Paul on this.

    94. Reed Simpson Says:

I love Ron Paul because he is 100% ‘right on’ in attacking the Fed as the privatized central bank monopoly money cartel that must be dismantled, and its operations and its powers revert back to the US Treasury whence they were derived originally, and constitutionally, where the monetary powers belong. The private Fed was “given” (it took from a vacationing congress on Dec. 23, 1913 during its Christmas recess) the monopoly for creating and issuing our currency AND our bank deposits (M1, M2, M3). Rather than issuing the required level of this money into the economy at no cost, as the US Treasury could and would do, just as other successful societies have also done historically, from time to time, by spending this monetary base into the economy; the Federal Reserve System and its member banks use its monopoly money powers to extract upwards of 6% for each dollar of money created. Where many many monetary reformists must point out where Ron Paul (and his Austrian School of monetary theory) are in error is the whole fallacy of a commodity such as Gold being the ONLY historical basis of a stable monetary system, and that the sole problem with our nations money is that it is “fiat” money. Historical evidence would suggest otherwise. Indeed, several important leaps forward of this nation (Continental Congress, Lincoln Greenback are two examples) were financed by this so called “fiat money” but issued by our own US Treasury, not by a foreign monopoly money cartel! If Gold has occasionally been a source of solid and stable backing for a nation’s currency, that is possible, but exceptional. Suggest anyone interested in monetary reform, as most of us supporters of Ron Paul are, to research this further in order to avoid the trap or danger of putting all of our hopes in the disproven Austrian School theory. This school is possibly a creation of the ancient Rothschild clan and their economic ilk, which seek to always control the monetary base, and when Gold was the standard, it was very easy for them to control and issue and own and to manipulate their gold. Once they created the private Fed, they simply were able to expand on the system they had already perfected with Gold-backed currency. They had the power, and still have the power, to manipulate and control all the gold on earth. Further, there is simply never enough quantities of mineable gold on earth to back a steadily growing and prosperous economy, it then acts as a major brake upon growth. And who do you think will have its hands on that brake?

Here’s why the American Monetary Institute (AMI – see http://www.monetary.org) considers the Austrian School as monetarily illiterate and not having done their homework:

A Refutation of Menger’s Theory of the Origin of Money
Here below is a two page summary plus communication with the Austrian School

A challenge to the Austrian School of Economics and the Ludwig Von Mises Institute. Of much more general importance than it sounds, obeisance is universally paid to Menger’s 19th century re-incarnation of John Law’s theory of money, by present day Austrian economists. Menger’s origin theory is also at the base (often explicitly) of much so-called libertarian thinking and writing today. For example Robert Nozick uses it to launch his book Anarchy, State , And Utopia, (p.18) one of the Libertarian’s “bibles”.

This paper most likely deals a “death blow” to this core thesis of the Austrian School, as formulated by Carl Menger, the school’s founder. In effect the Austrian’s are left without a viable theory of money. It would be difficult to imagine that one could be provided by Von Mises confused and self contradictory book THE THEORY OF MONEY AND CREDIT.The understandable reluctance of “Austrian gatekeepers” to address this issue are documented below.

      SYNOPSIS:
The paper challenges Menger on three grounds:

      METHODOLOGICAL GROUNDS:
Though it is generally assumed that Menger’s theory is at least in part derived from historical evidence, the paper demonstrates that its derivation is entirely theoretical, by showing that all the historically based evidence cited by Menger, is 180 degrees counter to his theory. The paper points out the inappropriateness of attempting to divine an historical event or process with only deductive logic.

      RATIONAL GROUNDS:
The paper points out that even within the framework of Menger’s scheme, there are two fatal flaws. First the circularity of his reasoning in determining his causes of liquidity, which arises from his use of the “development of the market and of speculation in a commodity” as a cause of liquidity, when in fact it is a definition of liquidity and even Menger uses it as such. The paper explains the crucial difference. This is not quite an example of what has been called “Weiser’s Circle”. Second, the paper points out that within Menger’s scheme, it is not liquidity, but volatility (or lack of it) which is much more important.

      FACTUAL GROUNDS:
The paper shows that some of Menger’s closely held general views of the stability of gold and silver and their universal use as money, are simply false. In addition the existence of the millennia long dichotomy in the gold-silver ratio between east and west, which Menger seems to be unaware of, appears sufficient to doom his theory. The paper presents some of the factual evidence gathered by William Ridgeway, in the ORIGIN OF METALLIC WEIGHTS AND STANDARDS; by A.H. Quiggin in A SURVEY OF PRIMITIVE MONEY; by Paul Einzig in PRIMITIVE MONEY; and by Bernard Laum in HEILEGES GELD; all as an indication that an institutional origin of money, whether religious or social, is much more likely to have occurred than Menger’s assumed market origin. (25 pages, footnoted, charts, a real barn-burner. Suggested donation $20 postpaid; students $10.)

      CORRESPONDENCE WITH THE AUSTRIAN SCHOOL:
Attempts to bring this paper to the attention of members of the Austrian School, through their publication, were at first blocked and then ignored, as seen in the following copy of their reply and critique of the paper; and the answer to their critique, to which they have not responded. “Make the most of it” indeed! Lets see if Internet culture can end such academic stonewalling, and flush the Austrians from their ivory towers down at good ole Auburn University.

      THEIR COVERING LETTER:
      A normal note.

      THEIR UNSIGNED CRITIQUE:
Comments on “A Challenge of Menger’s Origin of Money”
“The author seems to ignore economic theorizing in general and Austrian theorizing in particular. The author does not comprehend that Menger is using “essentialist” methodology to prescind from specific facts to arrive at a theory of history, in this case a theory of the origin of money. All of the author’s alleged empirical “refutations” of Menger are not refutations at all, and they have been largely known for a century; the fact that some primitive societies got stuck in barter, or that cattle has been used for money; are all well-known, and so what? The author does not seem to realize that money is a general medium of exchange, and a common denominator of prices, and that therefore any explanation of its origin requires an explanation of how such a general medium came about. Talk about a religious cult of gold explains nothing (except, perhaps, a part of the high non-monetary demand that gold has always enjoyed). For a summary of monetary history from a pro-gold standard perspective incorporating his alleged “refutations,” the author can look at J. Laurence Laughlin, Money, Credit, and Prices, (vol.1, chap. 1, 1931).

Finally, of course, the author seems to have no knowledge whatever of the pons asinorum (the “bridge of asses”) of monetary theory; Mises regression theorem of 1912, in which Mises showed that, logically, no money could have arisen in any way other than the Menger scenario. If this be “a priori history,” then make the most of it! It is inherent in the logic of the situation, and the logic of money as containing an historical component of demand a value.(sic)I am afraid that I am not able to recommend this article for publication in the RAE.

MY LETTER CHALLENGING THEIR CRITIQUE AND REQUESTING ANOTHER READER:
I responded with the following letter, which has remained unanswered (to Ocotber,96):
      Mrs. J. T.
Managing Editor, Review of Austrian Economics
Ludwig Von Mises Institute, Auburn University
      Auburn, Alabama, 36849
      Dec. 30, 1994

RE: my refutation of Menger’s Origin of Money theoryDear Mrs. Thommesen,Thanks for your letter of November 10, which I am a bit late in answering, as some writing assignments came up. I must take exception to the brief comments on the paper which were included. Its as though the Commentor didn’t read my paper very carefully, or ignored much of it. I respectfully request that you obtain a second opinion, for the following reasons:

First I can assure you that the paper is much more serious than the comments suggest. Looking at the comments sentence by sentence:

Sentence #1 – I’m not ignoring Austrian theory. My whole paper carefully considers Menger’s theory!

Sentence # 2 – My paper clearly makes the point that Menger does not identify any facts, from which he has abstracted his theory. There is no mention of times and/or places, whatsoever. What are the facts Commentor refers to? He has missed one of the papers main points.

Sentences #3 – #5 – Commmentor is not doing his job here. He is ignoring the 130 grain institutional convention on coinage. One of at least three ancient standard systems. Furthermore, the empirical refutation is only one part of the case against Menger. Commentor has completely ignored the logical refutation of Menger’s theory contained in the paper – Menger’s definitional circularity – as well as the clear demonstration that volatility, not liquidity, is the real feature to look for, within Menger’s logical scheme.Sentence #6 – Regarding Laughlin’s “pro-gold standard perspective”, that is a curious description. I’m familiar with Laughlin’s historical narrative from his 1911, PRINCIPLES OF MONEY. It doesn’t refute or challenge what I wrote on Menger. However out of courtesy to Commentor, I’ll check out the 1931 version, soon.

The bigger picture here though is that if Laughlin was aware of some facts which disqualify Menger’s theory, Laughlin, and Commentor’s ignorance of the relevance of those facts, does not invalidate the power of those facts to refute Menger! For example the great dichotomy in the gold-silver ratio between east and west.Commentor should be made aware that Laughlin is not a very objective source on monetary science; his work invariably supports special monetary privileges for bankers. To his discredit, he was either unable, or unwilling to identify that the effect of bankers creating deposits was nearly the same as bankers printing notes, in the newly organized Federal Reserve System, which he helped to author, or thought he did. Another low point in Laughlin’s career can be found in his comments on U.S. Treasury notes, issued in 1812, upon the dissolution of the 1st Bank of the U.S.

Next, regarding Commentor’s reference to Von Mises “Bridge of Asses”. Isn’t this the same argument which Benjamin Anderson (see THE VALUE OF MONEY, P. 89, Publisher R. Smith, 1936 edition) considered and rejected as inadequate, as a means out of Weiser’s “Austrian circle” on the value of money, even before Mises wrote his THEORY OF MONEY AND CREDIT in 1912? Anderson’s point was that “whats necessary is not a temporal regressus…but rather a logical analysis of existing psychic forces.” I think there is a reason why that won’t work for Austrian monetary theory, but that’s another matter. The point however is that my paper is addressed to Menger’s theory. Is Commentor saying that Menger’s “origin” can’t stand on its own merit and must be propped up by von Mises?

Commentor’s statement that “No money could have arisen in any way other than the Menger scenario” is an affront to science, and to consciousness everywhere, and should be identified as such. Economics will not likely be advanced by stubborn shouting. The facts must be examined in an open and logical manner.

Lastly, Commentor’s overdramatic assertion “If this be a’priori history then make the most of it” seems to say that its not whether Menger’s theory is accurate or not that matters, but whether there’s enough influence to put it over!

Before sending out my paper for publication, three people with advanced monetary knowledge read it. One an instructor of several years in monetary thought and history, at the graduate level. Another a professor of economics (Austrian) at a prestigious university; and the third a lifelong student and author of books on monetary history and theory. The first encouraged me to work toward publishing the paper. The second considered the volatility argument to be “good and interesting”, and the third wrote “This paper should be brought to the attention of scholars.” That’s why it was sent to you; but Commentor has dropped the ball, big time.

I request that you get a second opinion of the paper, and suggest that someone of Prof. Rothbard’s intelligence and maturity be asked to read it.

      Sincerely Yours,
      Stephen A. Zarlenga

At Ron Paul’s rally the other day in Killeen TX, Dr. Paul reminded us of Ross Perot, which was very refreshing. How many candidates today would have the guts to even acknowledge the movement that Ross Perot was trying to accomplish? I campaigned hard for Ross Perot, and can see now what he was talking about. Everything is happening just like he said that it would – if he did not win. It just sickens me to think how much greater our country would be now if our voters back then had been brave enough to vote him into office. Now, we have another chance to save our country; and we’re letting the mainstream news media, politically-correct (even though they say they aren’t) talk show hosts and so-called conservatives decide for us who will be on the ballot. If we do not step up to the plate and be brave enough this time to save our country, it will probably be too late to save it. It’s going to take God’s courage to help us. Bring up Ron Paul’s name every chance you get to let the disheartened know that he has a plan to get us out of this muck – we don’t have to settle for Juan McCain.

Mary beth, didn’t Ross Perot step out of the race for personal reasons of some kind? Or perhaps he was threatened with death if he didn’t step out. Who knows. But it wasn’t because the American people didn’t vote for him, if I remember correctly, and maybe I’m wrong.

    102. jay lee Says:

Ron Paul is a 2 faced weasel. He talks about false flag events on the Alex Jones show, but denies 9/11 Truthers at the beginning of his candidacy. Ron Paul is a toothless weasel with a yellow stripe down his back. Anyone that looks to Ron as a Revolutionary is living in a dream world. We are living in Nazi Germany 2008: Patriot Act, Homeland Security, Guantanamo Bay, devalued currency. If RP had stood up and demanded a new inquiry into 9/11, maybe he could have stopped this madness, but he was too afraid.

    103. agadinmar Says:

Ron Paul knows to whom he speaks and what damage ill-concisderd words can do. JG can yell 911inside job platitudes at the top his lungs because no-one cares what he thinks, or considers it important. and he has no reputation to destroy. Ron Paul knows that false-flag operations have occured, history proves it, but if he said anything other than what he did when answering that obvious attack question, he might as well have done a Dennis when he blew his answer to the UFO query. Ron Paul has suggested that further inquiry into the events of 911 would be valuable and informative, and in the present political climate that is merely common sense. Because Ron Paul didn’t back up JG’s belief systemhe’s off his list. Ron Paul doesn’t need supporters who speak without thinking. Sticking to the things that can readily be proven like financial falacies of the Fed and the eroneous encitements to war in the mid-east make much more sense and will slowly force open the door to other more controversial information.

    104. ACL Says:

Let’s see, he’s smart, he understands the real problems facing America today , he sais it as it is, and he has the courage to face and fight the elite. His only problem, he won’t admit to 911 as an inside job. However, just begin to think for a moment. Think about all those YOYO’s America and the rest of world has to offer. Sheep, who would rather believe the most ridiculous idiotic lies then the obvious truth. Then, think about this man who is trying to become President of the United States amongst all these YOYO’s, in the hope that he could get through to them in one way or another. What other choice did he have in this matter ?

      Get it ?

In any case America, why not just go ahead and vote Obama, Hillary or McCain.

      It makes perfect sense !

    105. jay lee Says:

      ACL

That’s my whole point. Without uncovering 9/11, you’ve got a bunch of frightened rabbits that have capitulated to the Patriot Act, Homeland Security, & Guantanamo Bay b/c they believe a bunch of crazed Middle Easterners committed this horrific act.

RP’s campaign has no credibility b/c he’s calling for a retreat in the middle of what many Americans believe is a legitimate War on Terror.

Ron Paul can march or suffer trampling. Americans want our money back, our language back, our jobs back, our schools back, our military back! stormfront orggg

    107. Ken Says:

The fact that those in power continue to abuse the American people will ultimately result in an uprising. If things continue to go the way they are going, there will be violence in the streets of America. So many are talking about it and it will only take a small spark to ignite the flames.

To prevent it, the powers that be need to follow the constitution as it is written, not as they feel it “can” be interpreted.

    108. dave Says:

Violent uprising is likely what they’re trying to provoke…fastest route to martial law.

    109. Bob G. Says:

Americans have been trusting people. It is our trust in those who do not deserve it that has gotten us into an unrecoverable financial collapse. The situation will not change until all of America refuses to continue to use the fiat gargabe paper Federal Reserve Notes. So long as Americans voluntarily continue to use Federal Reserve Notes and Federal Reserve banking mechanisms and credit, America will be owned by the Federal Reserve Bank’s owners. We voluntarily stopped using gold and silver as money and we voluntarily began using bookkeeping entry credit and phoney baloney Federal Reserve Notes as money. Ever since out turning away from hard metal money America has been on a downhill slide. It is only now, that the situation has become terminal, that some popole are waking up to the truth about the base evil nature of credit based fiat money systems such as the Federal Reserve.
I am afraid that it is too late for America.

    110. Randy Says:

9/11 was the signal for the process of the NWO to begin. For those that don’t believe it I challenge you to really do your research and connect the dots. All that has been happening since 2001 is not just coincidence.

I recommend Americans do the following:
      1) Contact your friends & family and inform them about the CFR, 9/11 truth, the NAU, the SPP, and the current manufactured economic meltdown to usher in the new currency, the Amero and the North American Union.
2a) Send out letters (Ask them why they are not confronting these issues. They can’t be denied, they’re already happening.) to as many media outlets, educational institutions and business’s, etc. & get the word out. 2b) Place info. flyers in people’s doors, put info. stickers on public places, and so on.
      3) Let’s get organized, we need to March on Washington D.C. and other key locations at least once a month, until the media/politicians starts to recognize what’s happening & does something about it.
LET’s MAKE SURE THEY KNOW, WE LOVE OUR COUNTRY & ITS CONSTITUTION!

God always supplies the right person for they right time. Ron Paul would make a great President but he is no Jesus Christ. He’s only a human with a good heart and can see the end at hand if we do not change our direction. Alex Jones, Ron Paul, and all who are doing their part to warn of the coming NWO are like modern day prophets that are warning a people that are asleep. Where are all those religious ministers leading the Churches, is it to the Fema Camps. This kind of reminds me, just where are all those religious zealots? Are they asleep or are they afraid to loose their exempt status from the IRS if they speak out against the demonic take over of our nation? What a bunch of cowards. Long life Alex and Ron Paul!
