Political pundits are speculating that Ron Paul could be on the verge of announcing his much awaited 2012 presidential run, after the Texas Congressman agreed to give a speech in Iowa at an event entitled “presidential lecture series” that will feature other likely Oval Office candidates.
“Texas Congressman Ron Paul “is strongly considering a run [for president] in 2012 and is currently assessing his prospects,” according to Jesse Benton, Senior Advisor to Rep. Paul’s Campaign for Liberty organization. This news comes on a day when we’ve also found out Paul has accepted an invitation to speak in Iowa next month,” reports Fox News.
Paul will speak at an event organized by conservative activist group The Family Leader. Other figures that have already committed to speak at functions organized by the group are widely expected to be presidential candidates, including Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty, Rep. Michele Bachman, former US Senator Rick Santorum, and former Speaker of the US House Newt Gingrich.
The Wall Street Journal’s Danny Yadron writes that Paul’s acceptance to appear at the event represents, “Another signal Mr. Paul is pondering his third run at the White House>”
Given the inevitability of Sarah Palin announcing her candidacy in the near future, greater emphasis is placed on a new Rasmussen poll that shows Ron Paul has a better chance of beating Obama than Palin. The former Governor of Alaska trails Obama by 11 per cent in current approval ratings, whereas Paul only trails the President by 9 per cent. Once Paul has the ability to beef his national platform and more easily communicate his policies, such a deficit can comfortably be overturned.
On the other hand, if the Republicans go with Palin, Obama’s second term is virtually guaranteed. Numerous interviews have highlighted the fact that Palin has little grasp of any policy issues and is a poor public speaker in a debate context. It was only a few months ago that she made another faux pas in claiming that North Korea was a U.S. ally.
Back in 2009, Alex Jones said that he was “completely confident” Ron Paul would run in 2012, given the success of his 2008 bid that helped launch the original Tea Party movement and got the ball rolling on the move to terminate the federal reserve.
Jones successfully predicted that the Congressman’s son, Rand Paul, would run for the Senate after he challenged him to do so publicly, which led the incumbent Senator in Kentucky to announce that he would not run against Rand Paul.
Indeed, an even bigger surprise could be Rand Paul running against his own father. Although this remains a possibility, it seems too early for Rand to have a chance of success given that he only assumed the position of Senator a matter of weeks ago.

“Freshman Sen. Rand Paul (R., Ky.) dropped hints last week that he could make an underdog run at the White House in 2012,” reports the Wall Street Journal. Although Rand admitted it would be premature, he told ABC News that he would step up to the plate “if nominated,” adding, “Come back and ask me in a few months.”
Given Rand’s presidential aspirations, and his father’s very real chance of beating Barack Obama should he be given the national platform he deserves, surely the dream ticket for 2012 would be a Ron-Rand father/son combination, with Rand running as Vice-President?
