Rupert Murdoch: “Internet Will Soon Be Over”

Billionaire media mogul Rupert Murdoch gave a strange response when asked about plans for mainstream news websites to charge for content, declaring, “The current days of the internet will soon be over.”
He was making reference to the fact that corporate media websites cannot continue to survive under their current failing business model.
The establishment media is dying and advertising revenue has plummeted as people turn to blogs and the alternative media for their news in an environment of corporate lies and spin.
This has forced sectors of the corporate media to charge the dwindling number of loyal readers they have left for news content, a practice which is set to become widespread according to Murdoch. This will only send more people over to the alternative media as the old organs of de facto state-controlled propaganda wither and die.
“Asked whether he envisaged fees at his British papers such as the Times, the Sunday Times, the Sun and the News of the World, (Murdoch) replied: “We’re absolutely looking at that,” reports the Guardian. “Taking questions on a conference call with reporters and analysts, he said that moves could begin “within the next 12 months‚” adding: “The current days of the internet will soon be over.”

Murdoch’s newspapers and TV networks, which include Fox News and the Asian Star Network, have seen profits plummet from $216m to just $7m year-on-year. MySpace.com is also floundering despite a recent move to replace the company’s entire management staff.
It was all but over for the Boston Globe this week, following a threat to close the 137-year-old publication after net losses of $85 million this year alone. Only a last minute cost-cutting agreement on behalf of its owner, The New York Times Company, and The Boston Newspaper Guild, saved the newspaper.
But it’s not just establishment newspapers that are struggling to survive – social networking websites like Twitter and corporate online video giant You Tube are also deep in the red. Apparently, paying out millions in server fees for half the population of the planet to watch clips of cute puppies isn’t a sustainable business model.
This is why You Tube is being forced to pursue lucrative partnerships with giant production studios and broadcasters, at the expense of user generated content which has been relegated to a sub-section of its website, taking the “You” out of You Tube altogether. Content that may be deemed harmful to You Tube’s corporate agenda and its multi-million dollar partnership deals, like The Alex Jones Channel, is being systematically erased from You Tube’s website under the pretext of flimsy copyright infringement claims.
The jig is up for the corporate media. If they continue to allow free access to their content they will go out of business because there’s not enough advertising revenue coming in, whereas if they charge for content they will lose a huge chunk of their audience and their influence in shaping the news agenda will wane completely.
This is the price the corporate media has paid for lying, spinning and obfuscating on behalf of the virulently corrupt power elite and expecting the population to eat it up without question.
The corporate media monopoly has terminal cancer and they are losing their power, which is why they are aggressively supporting moves to phase out the old Internet altogether and replace it with “Internet 2,” a highly regulated and controlled electronic Berlin wall, where alternative voices will be silenced and giant corporate propaganda organs will dominate once again.
This what Murdoch is really getting at when he assures us that, “The Internet will soon be over” and it’s down to us to stop that agenda from being realized.

I’m no computer expert, but I remember before there was Internet Service Providers, there was the BBS or Bulletin Board System, were you connected to another computer by having your computer call another computer over the phone with early modems. With Wi-Fi or future tech, couldn’t we just have software that creates a hubless net without using telephone or cable lines, just the computers themselves as relays???

The distance a radio link for computers will work, even under Wi-Fi, will severely limit the size of the network we could implement and the equipment isn’t all that inexpensive for extending ranges. Going back to BBS systems would likely be less expensive in the long run and there may be ways we can continue around the blocks they put on the Internet itself, depending on how they firewall it. Now, I’m not suggesting hacking their bright shiny Internet II, but there are other transmission protocols that they’ll leave intact that may serve our purposes.

This is a great point. I think that communication technology is so simple now that private individuals with very little know-how can make their own basic modems with easy to obtain parts. The demand for these services would be extremely high and people could operate businesses out of their homes to provide them. Even if the Fed goes Feudal and tries to make laws against it, it would be very difficult to stop.

Anyone who likes hackers, viruses, pop ups, off site scams that we cannot stop, and then stay with the current internet that we are using. They used “internet 2″ to remote control an underwater submarine states away and it has much more possibility. Yes I’m concerned about big brother, but let’s face it, this internet is infected with everything you worry so much about. China is sending out mass viruses and who knows what else they figured out. Frankly, I am rather tired of how the internet has evolved or regressed and I am leaning more and more to freeing up my life, like they way I trashed all my credit cards 10 years ago and am financially in great shape now on a cash only basis. I do not miss credit cards at all and I suspect that once I get rid of this computer I will forget about the internet just as easily and quickly as I did those pesky plastic cards.
Time tto dust off my beautiful Mont Blanc fountain pen and get back into writing letters and visiting libraries. They are a wonderful place to read the newspapers and take out a good book and video. Saves the enviorment and money. It also helps to keep our libraries alive and support our communities.
So go do your thang, Mr .Rupert Murdoch , it just might be a blessing in disguise in the long run, that will do a lot of good for a lot of people that need a good kick start to better mental health.

I feel like without the internet my PC will be like a little kids “Fisher Price” computer, not to mention crashes, and Y2K problems even my clock on my PC will not be able to set by itself. Censorship and Regulation sounds like something you had to deal with when you were in High School and when you lived with your parents. Also how is an operating system supposed to get its updates on various downloaded bought software? What? Are we going to just use Encyclopedia Britanica on CD-ROM or DVD again like a 12 year old and play solitaire all day? In EU first battle for internet is won, not without heavy casualities tho…
For time being Internet Service Providers cannot cut off users from internet without court order.
If the battle was not won, ISPs could cut off anybody from internet without breaking law on even suspects of dowloading pirate files or other illegal activities (or against global agenda for sure, like for running blog unfolding NWOs lies and manipulations, etc).
Unfortunately war will be lost eventually when they will inplement ipv6 fully.

Actually, an alternative “internet” already exists. It’s called “packet radio” among other things and is available right now to anyone with an Amateur Radio license. Linked repeaters are already in place whereby a computer in Dallas (for example) can contact another computer in Anchorage and interchange data at almost internet speeds. Networks can be connected using multiple NIC cards and multiple VHF or UHF tranceivers (not terribly expensive).
Recent changes in license requirements have removed the old morse code requirement for obtaining an Amateur license, so do a little studying of radio theory (available from the internet or your local ham radio club), get a license and start building the new free internet!

Sorry to be nitpicky, but the fact that it requires you to be licensed ensures that it isn’t “free,” when you have to ask permission, it’s a priveledge at best. The same goes for all things requiring licenses or permits, marriage, social security, boating, driving, hunting, mere priveledges, the marriage license is only one step removed from prima noctra, you must still get the king’s (gov) permission, however, they don’t get to seed your wife first, instead, they rape your wallet.

It’s called a transciever. It sends and recieves radio signals at the frequency either you set it for or it is built for. Any information that can be sent by a wire can be sent by radio as well. As long as all of the people wanting to access it can hit the same radio band(this is where “bandwidth” comes from) and then decode the signal, they can have it!

Without the internet many Smart Phones will not get their updates and upgrades and will be useless. Also without the internet the economy will definitely collapse and Rupert Murdoch will be out of a job due to the loss of important business data and the loss of viewers of the media. No internet will be like 1984 again, I mean the real 1984 when we all had shortwave radios and boomboxes and CB radios will end up replacing chat rooms. FM, AM and SW Pirate Radio activity will be on the up rise to replace internet radio stations. People will be living in 90’s and 80’s again. Cassette tapes and minidiscs will be coming back and CD’s will be like when they first came out cause we cannot download files. Do you really want to live in the 80’s again? Or do you want to live the current year 2009. Shutting down the internet isn’t the answer. Not to mention that most PC’s without the internet will not get their updates to keep the operating system working stable it will eventually die out. Also this means our computers will be like word processors to send letters by mail to our nearest congressman to turn the internet back on.

Find and develop networks within your state and across state if need be. Have outposts charted where you can link up when the time comes. You can bet your bottom dollar once they own all outlets of press coverage, anything involving the “patriot and freedom movement” will be typecast and demonized as utterly anti-American, radical “right-wing” extremism. The internet was one of the last avenues to voice ourselves freely and fight the information war in opposition to the propaganda and mainstream lies. So I google Maxwell Jordan. Go to his homepage. On the top I click Research button. Gives me 9 choices. I choose “Have You Ever Wondered”. I go to page 20 , straight to the bottom. 3 pics of original toothpaste labels. Drug Information on Colgate says : Sodium Flouride 0.243% (0.15% w/w flouride ion) with purpose stated as Anticavity. All 3 (Colgate-Crest-Aquafresh) have 0.15 or 0.16% in brackets. Under WARNINGS we have the instructions “Keep out of reach of children 6 years of age. If more than used for brushing is accidentily swallowed , get Medical help or contact a POISIN CONTROL CENTER. This for a flouride count of 0.15% w/w or p.p.m.!
Now I look at my Colgate toothpaste bought 2 weeks ago at Pharmaprix. This colgate in front of me has 0.76% w/w or p.p.m., 5times the amount toothpaste used to have. Is there any warning. my TONED DOWN WARNING says “To prevent swallowing , provide adult supervision and use only a pea-sized amount for children under six years”. THAT’S IT! No get Medical help , no contact poisin control center! BUT THE AMOUNT OF POISIN SODIUM FLOURIDE HAS GONE UP BY 5 TIMES!!!

I don’t use Direct TV I use Cox, DirecTV sucks and is restricted. He probably wants to use DirectTV dishes for satellite internet 2. Did you know that Huges Net is more expensive than Cox? That’s why I got it. If I didn’t have it I would not be typing this. BTW, I use WiFi

I do believe access to the internet could become free in some cities or countries, such as in the developing world, and that certain type of HD content on Youtube for instance would require a pay subscription not to Youtube but to highspeed internet offered by google. Considering Google has entered the mobile market with Android, I can also envision the day google will take over the 3G wireless infrastructure with its own satellite relays… Companies like Google are trying to create a better world, and that’s why they are so successful. The future belongs to these giants and others yet to come on the scene.. The old paradigm is being replaced by a new one…. It’s not by spreading fear we will create a better world, but by spreading positive ideas and optimism.

stations played one good song a couple of times and then put the CD away and forgot about it and then claimed that they lost the CD or minidisc. Google knows music, they would be a good replacement for XM satellite radio. We may have over more than 200 channels of radio station genres and talk and truth talk radio such as Alex Jones Show. To be honest I one of the G1 google phones, they are keeping me informed about the weather and information that I could not get on my other phones. I’ve been downloading many videos,pdf’s,files,and web pages…I save the web pages in the printed format to my docs and store all of it to an external hard drive…because I’m afraid these control freaks will attempt to heavily regulate it so no has access to alternative news and info.

Delivering text and pictures via the Internet is *the* most efficent way of delivering text and pictures, that’s why the Internet is so successful. However there never was a way to charge for the service. Papers are sold by shops, who are already set up to sell things. Telephones are set up to bill for calls, it’s pretty much their most complex function.
The Internet was never built with billing in mind, which is both it’s strongest and weakest point.
Newspapers don’t show video so why should a newspapers websites chose to spend huge bandwidth on this feature for free?
I was amazed when YouTube arrived, how could these people possibly afford all that bandwidth? I had tried to do an MP3 record label website but the bandwidth costs made it prohibative.
Standard text websites are so cheap to serve in comparison. You can reach thousands for pocket money.
