Russia’s Dissident Bloggers Fear for Their Lives

MOSCOW—A new chill is spreading among Russian bloggers following the death of the journalist-owner of an opposition website.

While opposition viewpoints are rarely presented in Russian newspapers these days (and even less frequently on television), the Internet has remained a place where Russians of all ideological stripes are able to express themselves.
But following the mysterious death of Web journalist Magomed Yevloyev and the prosecution of disaffected bloggers, there are fears that authorities are trying to squeeze shut that remaining outlet for freewheeling debate.
The issue came sharply into focus with the August 31 killing of Yevloyev, the founder of a popular site called Ingushetia.org that reports on human rights abuses in the restive southern Russian region of Ingushetia.
After he landed at the airport in the Ingushetian town of Nazran, a police convoy picked him up. Less than an hour later, he was delivered to the hospital with a fatal bullet wound to his head. Prosecutors have suggested the shooting was an accident, perhaps the result of Yevloyev trying to grab an officer’s gun, though his supporters say it was punishment for his muckraking site. “It was a premeditated murder,” concludes Musa Pliyev, a lawyer for Ingushetia.org.

Most everyone living in Russia knows they cannot dissent with the official media line. Bloggers have been taking their lives in their hands. Dissenters and reporters crossing the line are either shot, sent to psychiatric hospitals and imprisoned and loaded with all kinds of brain damaging drugs, or simply sent to prison. The Russians will protect their interests and those who they believe to be in their sphere such as South Ossetia which was a good thing. On the other hand, they want no opposition or criticism just praise. The best way for opening the system up is for bloggers living outside Russia and emigres with no family in Russia to keep working at exposing the truth. It should not be that for every one thing that Russia does right that the Net and media have to become total sycophants on other issues. This matter has bothered me for quite some time. There are ways to get inside information out of Russia, but it has to be done covertly and sometimes quite crudely. I had mixed feelings when Alex went on Russia Today because I felt they would use it for propaganda purposes. Fortunately, they contained it to the interview. It still made me feel funny in my gut.
Google Russian suppression of dissident journalists and bloggers. They have a looooooooong way to go. Likewise, people in the last Russian election for President knew they had no other choices so they wrote comedic comments on the ballots. All bloggers and reporters have to find the most innovative ways to get this process to stop by exposure. Thanks for running this piece.

Well it’s about time Infowars posted the truth about what’s going on in Russia. After weeks of falling all over themselves over Russia, Infowars finally posts the reality of what’s going on there. Story after story about how great Russia and Putin were for going against the evil neocons in Georgia was getting really old. Thanks for this story Infowars, you’ve renewed my faith in you for the time being.

Russia’s rulers ostensibly have little reason to worry about Net users. United Russia, the political party of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and Medvedev, overwhelmingly dominates parliament and the country’s political discourse, and Russians are happy with their increased affluence under Putin.
This was the only thing worth taking note of out of that article!
And even if it was true who was Ron Perlman and who killed him?
Those tactics mentioned are not unknown to our country!

I’m getting some mixed signals here. Not but a few weeks ago I remember being told how the Russian media was more honest than the American media. Now I’m reading that Russian media does not allow for any outlets of personal expression. Now, I already know Georgia was the aggressor in the Russian/Georgia conflict. However, I have a hard time believing that the media in Russia has changed so much in the past few weeks. Going by what my Russian friends have told me as to things in Russia, I’m thinking this is more of a propaganda piece than actual news. What is the point in posting an article that this website did not create? What kind of journalism is it when you just copy and paste? What makes it worth while to come to infowars for news if your only going to see copied material? If I wanted mainstream news, I’d visit a mainstream news outlet. This is getting lame. Also, PrisonPlanet forums sucks, because infowars allows SANE/ROCK to ban anyone who does not agree with him. SANE/ROCK has that over lord power trip going on. I suppose banning people for not toting the line, is no different than what this article alleges minus the murders.

When will all people realize that every single major world power is doing exactly the same things: oppression, suppression, persecution, execution, and propaganda. Mixed in different quantities of course. The end result, though, is similar.
Russia is conveniently praised when it says something with which we agree. But all is not well in Russia, and I would still rather live in the USA than Russia when this country goes into depression.
Do you think Russia is prosperous? You haven’t read up on what happens outside of cities, in villages?
Russia is no more a benevolent deliverer than McCain, or Obama. They are interested in expanding their control, and hence will use anything to gain that control. Once the control is gained, the noose is tightened, and you end up in a communist state that’s not any different from a fascist state. It’s still a dictatorship, and the government cares not one iota about people that cannot be useful to it. In fact, even the people that are useful to the government are used and eventually discarded.
I still think that USA is the most humane of all to its citizens, and I challenge you to prove me wrong.

How about the EPA certifiying that the air at ground zero was safe when obviously it wasn’t due to all the lung conditions that many of the first responders and rescue workers developed and then denying those heroes healthcare. Nothing humane about that, just disgusting.

I’ve read about this case a month ago when it happened.Ingushetia like the rest of North Caucasus is
based on a clan system.Just like the article said the relatives have already vowed blood revenge.It’s inconclusive who’s behind this killing , it could or couldn’t have been related to some local blood feud.

a joke US News and World report is criticizing Russia for censorship, or worse. US News does the same thing every week! There are dozens/hundreds in europe, and soon in the US, that are in jail for questioning ‘official’ WW2 events. You laugh now, but you know if never stops and soon you can’t say anything and they’ll put your ass in jail too (we have dozens of people in jail – almost all white – for phony ‘hate’ crimes) – that’s right here in the west! People are in jail for expressing their views! Obama’s Truth Squad is using law enforcement during an election for intimidation at the very least. Will US News report any of this? Sure, go on and bash Putin and Medvedev now – they’re the only lukewarm nationalists out there. Hopefully, I didn’t come off as to critical of infowars.com. You know what they say, opinions are like [insert imagination here] everybody has one. I’m still not happy with the cut and paste tactics I often find here. However, I still enjoy infowars and it’s certainly one of my favorite sites to visit and get info. At the same time, damn that SANE/ROCK character who has allowed his great title of “global moderator” to go to his narrow minded head. Seriously, if you got rid of that clown you wouldn’t be loosing so many members. True, some are trolls but come on, to many have been banned without cause. I suppose it’s your site you can do as you please. It’s just for some folks this little site serves as a gathering. Yes, every time I comment I’m going bring up SANE/ROCK’s unjust banning of forum members. I’ll likely continue to be critical of everything infowars does too. My friend recently served a Mormon mission in Russia for two years. He learned the language and is fluent. He told me that the Russian government is reverting back to its old ways (USSR). However, it is through the Russian Orthodox Church that they are doing so. Maybe it will work that way?? The Mormon church is no longer sending missionaries to Russia due to the outrageous costs Russia charges to renew the missionaries visas, violence, and the overall relations with the Russian government (orthodox church). He had first hand experience in Russia and all the people he talked to considered the government a theology, and he and other missionaries were attacked regularly by Russian common people for either being American, Mormon, or the people were in drunken stupors. Sounds like a happy place to me…

ALEX!!! The bill sent to the house thet was voted on on Monday and failed was 106 pages. The bill just passed by the senate on wednesday is 451 pages. It is bloated with all kinds of new energy tax incentives and basically they are going to phase out our gas outos and they are to be replaced with electric and alternative fuel vehicles. All the money is going to coal, oil and alternative fuel sources. I only skimmed through it over about 15 minutes but I can not believe this is BLOATED with energy provisions, not to mention you have to know what language they are speaking to read it.
They are trying to pass a fast one on us and swindle us again…SOMEONE PLEASE GET ON THIS AND SEND IT AROUND THE WORLD. OUR CONGRESS MUST BE MADE AWARE BEFORE THEY VOTE ON IT. THIS IS INSANE!!!

Kenneth, they were totally and completely honest about what happened in South Ossetia on 8.8.08 and what they did to protect S. Ossetia and Abkhazia. There was no misreporting. The internal suppression of journalists and bloggers who are truly investigative is another story. They have, shall I say, a very short shelf life. Sadly. Hell, if they told some of the real stories about Putin I doubt they would be alive the next day. It is my hope that Russia will become more open and Putin will be more mature. I would not even post what I know about Putin here because it would cause issues if a certain person wanted to do more interviews on Russia Today. The Russian media admit to a lot more than they used to. They recently ran a piece on Russia Today TV about the chronic problems of alcoholics and the women who have banded together to help them. They admitted the men drank to oblivion because of high rates of unemployment and boredom. They even interviewed the drunks. You see that story is safe because if does not talk about state power. Russia will change, but not for the next five years.

Because we are here, we have won the war already. WE have proven that all of us can see that something is deeply wrong. WE have realised that things are not well in our house of cards. The king has finally fallen from the second row, and the ace that lies flat at the top of the house is the only card that will drift to a gentle resting place. WE are together in the sense that we all understand a great evil is among us, cursing us, hounding us. No, we will resist by closing down the system itself, by denying ourselves of it. I estimate there are nearly a billion people in this fight with us now, awake, aware, and listening to leaders like Alex Jones. Leader, not in the sense he wants to, to be some sort of quasi-God or new inspiration. Because thats whats common among inspirational people. They usually don’t desire power itself. Oh, sorry. the ingushetian republican police and security apparatus has a long history of kidnapping and murder. most of the so-called chechen separatist kidnappings during the chechen war were ingushetian police, according to some sources. it discredited the chechens and made a lot of money.

I am Russian citizen myself (not Russian national) and just let me explain a little about Ingushetiya. It is a little muslim area in Caucasus, bordering Chechnya and Ossetia. Ingushs even though is a small nation they were never united. Their nation is divided by a dozen of Teips which are built around family clans. The “opposition website” was nothing more than a tool to fight against the Teip that now is in power in Ingushetia. This site had not much with opposition and the credbility of that site was just very low. I do visit that site quite a bit and trust me, I wish it never existed due to amount of hatred it spreads to Ingush people. I am more than sure that this site provoked more than one murder that happened in this region.

Russians – you just cant handle the truth about your legacy, you’d better live in lies and denie all that is true. There is saying – you have to know past to move forward in right direction – and I see where Russia goes today – same old crap empire of brainwashed slaves, that only goal is to serve their master.

ZACH do you remember the story of an agent who died from some type of radiation poison and supposably the father of the man who died blamed putin and went as far to say putin was a child molester and they showed a clip of him lifting the shirt of a young boy and kissing him on the stomach. now i’m not saying he is or isn’t being if our media reported it (briefly of course) i don’t believe it.

Well it’s about time Infowars posted the truth about what’s going on in Russia. After weeks of falling all over themselves over Russia, Infowars finally posts the reality of what’s going on there. Story after story about how great Russia and Putin were for going against the evil neocons in Georgia was getting really old.
